I used to use Ernie Ball Super Slinky's on my 6 string guitars (9/42) but changed to D'addario a long time ago. I prefer the feel of them I dunno why? For bass I only use Rotosound 105/45.

Hi from Budgie tribute bass player
Hi Welcome to the forum - I am a self confessed Budgie nut and have been watching since 1974. Met Burke a few times and thanked him personally for teaching me bass - He was a bit confused by this till I stated that I learnt from all the albums. I progressed to Geddy lee, John wetton and Chris Squire later.. I am now in a covers band and try to slip Budgie stuff in wherever I can. Stuff like their versions of Nutbush and Baby Please Don't Go... also Breadfan of course I can get away with - wish I could do more Budgie stuff but they are a bit obscure nowadays.... I am also on Bandolier! You must know Sacko, I take it? He pulled together some handy tabs I recall that Simon Lees and Burke did not gel too well.... according to a guitaring mutual acquaintance of mine....... You need a battered P Bass though - A Rickie aint right. Trace Elliot is okay though! Hope Burke recovers soon from his heart related problems.. P
Hi Paul thanks for the welcome! I ought to know Sacko...he is the guitarist in our band! I also learned by playing Budgie stuff I got into them in around 1975. Geddy is an influence, my fave bass player is Chris Squire. I didn't know you were on Bandolier? You may be right about Simon and Burke, I just think that Burke wants things done HIS way, it's HIS band so to speak and he is probably set in his ways. He's also probably the reason why Budgie never made it big time because they really should have done. Sorry a Ricky IS right The Trace will be up for sale actually I need to downsize. To be honest I don't even try to emulate Burke's tone, or singing style (too high anyway) we just enjoy playing Budgie's music. Anyway, Burke has used a couple of different basses he now owns a Music Man apparently. I wished I could afford a 60's Precision but hey come that lottery win.........Ditto regarding his current health issues I hear he is on the mend. Thanks for your reply. Tony. -
Hello from Canada. I'm new here too and also wanted to jump in and make contact. And I've just listened to your tunes...great stuff indeed! Your band has a really polished and clean, punchy sound. And some very lovely basslines going on too ! I hope you find a wonderful new cab soon, and I send along best wishes for your upcoming tour and CD. Thanks so much for sharing the great tunes, and yes, what a pretty bass you have too. Good luck to you, Sean. Cheers from Kathleen.
Well if you are new here, welcome to the both of you -
Best of luck with the band and glad you recovered

You certainly are not alone. I get cramp playing the Budgie track In For The kill but only while playing the main riff. I have no idea why, not every time I play but most of the time and always the same track NO other song.....it's very odd. So when it comes to the guitar solo part of the song (if i'm cramped up at that point), i'll use my thumb over the neck to play (because it's a very simple part) and it gives my fingers time to recover! it may seem odd but it seems to work for me.

I can't use lemon oil on a Ricky fretboard because it is lacquered. I always clean the bass and fretboard the day after a gig or practise.

Lead guitarist had a crack at bass!
clarkpegasus4001 replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
When I was in my last band, one time I remember I couldn't make a rehearsal. They decided to rehearse anyway and one of the two guitarist's decided that and he would bring his bass to rehearsal and play my parts. At the next rehearsal, the second guitarist turned to me said, "NEVER AGAIN!" I asked why and he said cuz all he was trying to do was play lead guitar on bass! and it sounded like s**te. I think I got appreciated a lot more after that episode. I am a rhythm guitar player turned bassist, but the bass is a different animal and it has to be approached in a different way. -
I have a Line 6 Pod UX2 which cost about £130. I use this through a laptop for recording purposes (using Cubase), but it is cool to use for silent practice with headphones. I can put on a cd on the laptop and play along if I wish in silence. The pc is set up so that the it uses the Pod's in-built sound card (so headphones only). This has another advantage in that if you come up with an idea, you can record it, burn it to disc and play it to your band mates. Perhaps this might be a solution? If it's just an amp you want to use at home perhaps a Roland Cube?
I'm in a band called the Fallen. It's a female fronted covers band. Were out gigging regular, which is something I could never see with the AW tribute.
That's because it was me that got all their gigs! I'm glad you got into a good band and I hope it's all going well for you. If I see your band listed i'll try to get to see you. It's not easy (as you probably know yourself) to get to see many bands when you gig yourself. I am no longer a member of the WA forum, I havn't been for a long time. I still go on MTWA forum but I don't post anything like I used to. It's a shame about the fans bickering but I don't get involved in all that nonsense. I tend to spend most of my time on Basschat and Progarchives these days to be honest. Anyway, it's nice to know you are doing well, i'll pass your wishes on for you, if I happen to bump into the old band. Tony. -
A Budgie tribute? Christ you've got your work cut out. Can't believe the bass lines Burke Shelley sings over. My tone was once compared to his, which I was very pleased about.
You have a tone like Burke's? that's I can play the bass lines ok, (it's nothing like as difficult as the Wishbone Ash stuff I was playing before) it's the singing as i've never sang before. -
Best strap locks for Rickenbaker 4003
clarkpegasus4001 replied to TerryV's topic in Accessories and Misc
Although I don't currently use straplocks on my bass, I have used Schallers before and they are excellent. If I were going to use any it would be those. -
Aren't there now two Wishbone Ash ?
Er....yes but that is a touchy subject with fans! There is Wishbone Ash fronted by Andy Powell and there's Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash. I prefer the latter and they are friends of mine. -
Hi Everyone, Just thought I would say hello, from not so sunny Stoke On Trent. I am 54 and just setting out on the bass.........well they say its never too late to learn. I was given an old Honer bass and seem to be enjoying myself. I would like peoples opinions as to getting myself a decent bass. My main music preference is Yes and in particular Chris Squire. As I cannot afford a 4001 Ricky, what bass and amp on a reasonable budget could achieve something like the sound of a Ricky. I realise that the strings are also a factor. We thats it,I look forward to getting more info through the forum but in the meantime any imput would be appreciated Cheers John
Hello John and welcome to the forum. Well I guess only a Rick is going to sound like a Rick but there are plenty of copy Ricks out there that might fit the bill. Chris Squire is my fave bass player and I play a Rick so I know where you are coming from. Check out the this site you may find a bargain. I guess a lot depends on your budget as well....good luck!
