1. Thanks for the ideas guys, mucho appreciated! Nice to know the G&Ls have the thick necks (the M2500 has been on my radar since they came out) Never really looked at Warwicks though, I'll keep my eyes peeled for something local to have a look at. I feel this is a case of GAS that's going to be a very long and drawn out process! The horror...
2. I've recently realised that I'm alot more comfortable playing really thick necks these days as my preferred slim front to back neck profile seems to make me cramp a bit now. I'm just toying with the idea of maybe buying a new neck for my Squier VM P5. Any ideas who may do such a replacement neck? Failing that, who makes a decent 5 string with a baseball bat of a neck, say up to 5 or 600 quid? Active, passive, whatever. Would just be nice to get an idea what's out there beyond the Fender/Squier/Musicman circles I seem to move in. G&L could be a possibility if their tributes have thick necks like I've heard the USA models do.. Funny how our bodies change over time in't it?
3. I sold a set of tuners to Bryan in a great friendly deal. Lovely guy, top basschatter. Cheers!
4.
Sounds great - apparently she played guitar on it as well. More info and a second link in here http://forums.ernieball.com/music-man-basses/61627-carole-kaye-music-man-stingray-bass.html
Thanks! 👍
5.
I like the simplicty of a P. I also like the idea of a G&L, but without all the switches and knobs. So I dropped an MFD humbucker in my Matt Freeman. I couldn't afford an L1000 so I made a P1000 It sounds similar to a P but has a little more grunt on tap if needed. I'm rather liking it.
Love it! Did you wire it up like a wunkay too, with all the switching options ?
6. The 5 string black tapewounds are fantastic.
7.
Why didn't I think of this! I think there might be a shop near me that stocks these as well, thanks what's the difference between the M-2500 and the L-2500, it seems to be just the preamp, are there any other differences? I think the simpler controls of the L might suit me better. i'll keep my eye out for a sterling ray35 as well Matt
Check out the vid - all is explained there 👍 I suggested the M rather than L because it is the simpler one by all accounts. I think the L has too many tone options for some folks.
8. G&L M2500 tribute - 17.5mm spacing chunky neck simple controls within budget https://m.thomann.de/gb/gl_tribute_m_2500_hb.htm https://m.thomann.de/gb/gl_tribute_m_2500_black.htm A review of the USA M2500. The Tribute has the same made in USA pickups and electronics as this American model: http://youtu.be/Rpde-ZSNeW4 Boom.
9.
If Ididn't already have one I'd be joining in with the GAS. I don't use mine that much, but learned after selling one I need a Ray in my life.
I hear you. I had a lovely early Ernie Ball 2 band that I sold a few years ago. I found it hard to be a one bass guy with just a Stingray, so it had to go at the time. Now I'm plotting and planning on getting an Alnico pup'd SR5. Need that funky flavour in my life again! "It will be mine... Oh yes.."😁
10. http://carolkaye.com/www/library/sounds/mp3/Changes.mp3 This just popped up on my Facebook feed, Carol recorded this as a demo tune for Musicman to promote the Stingray when it was first launched. Great. I haven't even rubbed the sleep from my eyes and now I've got GAS for a Stingray with flats! Is there no end to this torment?... 😉
11.
all you need is one halfway-decent bass - then learn how to play the bloody thing.
Boom! The truth.
12. Actually, why limit yourselves to female fronted band covers? If she can go low like Alison Moyet, you could do anything really. World's your onion. You could do Common People by Pulp. Arguably the song of the 90's.
13.
Not M People for the love of God!!
Or Republica I'd say. Radio overkilled to the max. Boring. If it has to be 90's stuff then: Waking Up - Elastica Shee-la-na-gig or/and 50ft Queenie - PJ Harvey.
14. Try nickel Dr Lowriders, they're made for the job. Fantastic B. I have a HB Progressive 5 string and the B is good on it IMO, even though I'm using tapewounds at the mo.
15. Hmm looks like I might have to be the first to boldly go then! I've got the HB shorty P and a B-550fl which have proved to be lovely playing and sounding basses, and not just for the price. I trust HB enough now to know this MB-5 will be half decent at least. It is passive though so I am wondering how Stingray-esque it can sound.
16. These have been out for a while now, anyone here own/played one yet? Thoughts? https://bdbo.thomann.de/thumb/bdb1600/pics/bdbo/10256544.jpg
17. Very impressive! Looks ace, well done mate.👍
18.
Yeh I don't think you need intent E.G my dishwasher makes a very musical beat
Funny, I jam along to mine now and again. It sounds like a nice sloshy beat box! 😀
19. Nice looking bass! Happy NBD. May I be the first to ask the inevitable BC question.. Erm, how much does it weigh?
20.
"A sound is musical if..."
...it sounds musical.
21. 5 string P bass with that pre? TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!
22. This thread is genius! Hopefully it will dent the demand for Wals to such an extent that I will be able to afford one at last. Keep it up fellas! 👍 Here's my contribution.. http://youtu.be/a0qDEVVtZvk
