1. Snarky Puppy in Manchester a few weeks ago. Still scratching my head and feeling rather inadequate.
2. Yes, eagerly awaiting that 5 string Sire P bass! 🙏
3. Having a clear out of my bits box.. Fender flatwound B string (now discontinued) cut for Fender but unplayed. £6 posted Sold
4. Fender 9050CL flats 105-45 (now discontinued). Loads of life left in them, cut for P bass. Nice and growly for flats. £12 posted Sold
5. I've barely used it as I just haven't had the time to get into it. £50 posted **sold**
6. You could buy a super lightweight Paulownia P bass body and transplant everything from the G&L onto that. Add some licensed by Hipshot Ultralite tuners and you'll have a sub-8lb L2000 easy. Cheaper than a new bass too. http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/P-Bass-body-custom-Paulownia-WoodVery-Soft-WoodUnfinished_p_1417.html http://www.sporthitech.com/hipshot-ultralite-lic-hb6c-1-2-bass-tuners-5-string-5-inline-3x2-etc-satin-chrome/ I've actually imported both these items for myself in the past. The tuners were £60 delivered to my door, the body was £75 (although it's on sale for half price now!) Depends how much you love the L2000 sound though, whether It'd be worth it.
7.
Now we're getting mixed up between width & depth. You're talking about the broad-neck Warwicks which came with a wider fret-board for wider string spacing, I don't think they made the necks any deeper to accommodate this. I'm now not sure if the OP want a deep neck or a wide neck but I can definitely say Warwick necks of the 00's are deeper than Fender as I flick between the two all the time.
Hey OP here. Just to clarify, I'm looking for meaty girth front to back (fnarr) Fingerboard width and string spacing is much less important to me. Cheerz!
8.
The Squier Deluxe Active Jazz V is a very good bass for the money and has the biggest neck I have ever played but I love it and play it all the time. I love a chunky wide neck and Used to have a Roscoe Beck V which also had a substantial next to it. I just bought a P5 and it feels very slim in comparison to the Jazz Deluxe but I do find it very comfortable. I don't think you will find a drop in neck for the Squier VMP5 but you can get the Squier Deluxe for about £160 used sometimes.
Yes the necks are over 2" at the nut! Good idea, especially used. Thanks.
9.
There was a thicker/wider neck option available for Warwicks a few years ago (there still might be), and if it's any wider than the 2000-ish 5-string Streamer I once picked up, it'll be like trying to strangle a giraffe one-handed...
Cheers Muzz 😁
10.
Judge for yourself. My jazz (very similar profile to your P5) is on the left and the Harley Benton is on the right. Low B its actually pretty reasonable especially given the price. You wanna swap?
The HB certainly does look thicker. Interesting! Crazy that the whole bass is actually cheaper than a mighty mite neck. I might have to pick one up just to see. I also have a HB shorty P (non deko) that is a cracking little bass so I do have faith in Harley Benton. Thanks for taking the time to photo your basses. Very cool of you!
11.
Still slimmer front to back than my cheap and cheerful Harley Benton PJ5 though.
Would you say the Harley Benton PJ5 has a thick neck front to back? I have a HB 550fl deko that has a pretty chunky neck, feels really nice. If the PJ5 had the same depth of neck then that would suit me! What's the B string like?
12. Thanks for the ideas guys, mucho appreciated! Nice to know the G&Ls have the thick necks (the M2500 has been on my radar since they came out) Never really looked at Warwicks though, I'll keep my eyes peeled for something local to have a look at. I feel this is a case of GAS that's going to be a very long and drawn out process! The horror...
13. I've recently realised that I'm alot more comfortable playing really thick necks these days as my preferred slim front to back neck profile seems to make me cramp a bit now. I'm just toying with the idea of maybe buying a new neck for my Squier VM P5. Any ideas who may do such a replacement neck? Failing that, who makes a decent 5 string with a baseball bat of a neck, say up to 5 or 600 quid? Active, passive, whatever. Would just be nice to get an idea what's out there beyond the Fender/Squier/Musicman circles I seem to move in. G&L could be a possibility if their tributes have thick necks like I've heard the USA models do.. Funny how our bodies change over time in't it?
14. I sold a set of tuners to Bryan in a great friendly deal. Lovely guy, top basschatter. Cheers!
15.
Sounds great - apparently she played guitar on it as well. More info and a second link in here http://forums.ernieball.com/music-man-basses/61627-carole-kaye-music-man-stingray-bass.html
Thanks! 👍
16.
I like the simplicty of a P. I also like the idea of a G&L, but without all the switches and knobs. So I dropped an MFD humbucker in my Matt Freeman. I couldn't afford an L1000 so I made a P1000 It sounds similar to a P but has a little more grunt on tap if needed. I'm rather liking it.
Love it! Did you wire it up like a wunkay too, with all the switching options ?
17. The 5 string black tapewounds are fantastic.
18.
Why didn't I think of this! I think there might be a shop near me that stocks these as well, thanks what's the difference between the M-2500 and the L-2500, it seems to be just the preamp, are there any other differences? I think the simpler controls of the L might suit me better. i'll keep my eye out for a sterling ray35 as well Matt
Check out the vid - all is explained there 👍 I suggested the M rather than L because it is the simpler one by all accounts. I think the L has too many tone options for some folks.
19. G&L M2500 tribute - 17.5mm spacing chunky neck simple controls within budget https://m.thomann.de/gb/gl_tribute_m_2500_hb.htm https://m.thomann.de/gb/gl_tribute_m_2500_black.htm A review of the USA M2500. The Tribute has the same made in USA pickups and electronics as this American model: http://youtu.be/Rpde-ZSNeW4 Boom.
