I'm assuming Warwick's remain unpopular, and thus don't really count - leaving threee basses Why do we even need to have the distinction between collector and player? It feels like there's some snobbery therein, maybe from both sides - I don't see how one wins out over the other. Whilst my personal preference would be to have all of mine played, even if only a little, I can see how other people can find their paths to happiness; I'd find it abhorent that someone would own many guitars and never play them, I don't think my opinion would impinge on his or her happiness; and nor should their opinion impinge on mine. Utlimately, it's your own justification which counts. If you're at the stage of wondering if you have too many, you perhaps have more of the answer than you know
I agree, there shouldn't be any distinction between collecting and playing. have as many as you want. Its not about getting out there and playing them. There could be all manner of reasons why people dont all 'get out there and play'. As long as they are enjoyed, and appreciated by the owner, then thats good enough for me. As stated earlier, I think its a shame to have them stored somewhere externaly though, as they clearly arent being enjoyed, or played, but that again, is the owners choice, and he can do what he damn well likes. I've had my time gigging, I enjoyed it, most of it anyway, but have no interest in doing it again whatsoever, that shouldn't influence how many guitars i own. Its all about opinions though, personally I'm happy for people to do what they like. I love basses, so I could never have too many, and the amount I do own is only restricted by my cash and space. Alot of people on here, from what they say anyway, would only have one if they had millions of quid, fine by me, but I'd have shitloads!!!
Too many is when you don't play them. If you can't put serious time into one of them, then I don't see the point. Also, if you don't touch one from one month to the next, what sort of playing condition is that going to be in anyway.
Far better than the ones you play regularly is the answer to that! Don't subscribe to that at all. How does not playing an instrument worsen its ability to be played. I have a bass that i play all the time, and its constantly needing attention and tweaks, the ones i play less frequently need nothing. You think John Entwistle played all of his on a daily basis? The point is owning the things you want, and having them there for when you want to play them, if thats your interest. I think you're confusing this with how many do you 'need', in which case the answer is one. Do people who have a collection of 100 Toby jugs have to drink beer out of them everyday to justify owning them? No.
Is the truss rod the right way around for a 70s bass? Mine is at the headstock end, although its a little later than 72. Not sure when they changed this...
I assume yours is a bullet truss rod version, which would be right for a letr 70's model. This ones fine. If yours has a regular truss rod adjuster at the headstock, then it aint right.

No such thing as too many. You should have as many as you want/can afford/have space for. If that's one, then great, if it's 50, then grrrreat. I have more than I need, but if i could afford more, I'd have them, no question at all. We all only need one though. I must say though, as has already been said, if you need to rent external storage space for them, then that might tell you something!!
My May 1964 Hofner Violin Bass, which I have owned since Nov 1988.
Nice one, i used to have an identical one, lovely basses, necks too thin for me to play regularly though, Very nice example you have there!!

Decal is right, the S/N didnt appear on the headstock until late '76. Regarding the switched parts, he does say in the title "Orig pu's/bridge/guard will be returned". The only thing iffy is the price!, asking around double the real value.
I've just had a look on your web site Rick and it is far from amateur. Some stunning basses there, well done to you for sourcing such wonderful pieces of modern music history. Bet none of that little lot came overnight!
Thanks for the kind words, my 10 year old helped me with the site!! I must get round to updating it, a few bits missing, that need adding. It has taken a while to put them together, although I'm always active in the market, a few years ago i decided it was quality rather than quantity that i wanted, then once i got a taste of quality vintage, i wanted more of them, so the plan didnt exactly work, its very addictive though, theres always something on the wants list!! Looking for a nice Jazz now, or a 4005! Anyway, its better than money in the bank at the moment, and you get to play them all every day too, which can't be a bad thing! Thanks again, Rick. -
Cheers Rick's fine 52. Hope you enjoy P'boro. I see Northamton is losing its daily paper as well - great shame.
To be honest Mike, I didn't know that, which tells you I'm not a reader of local press, or any newspapers actually. I guess its folk like me that are part of the end of this great tradition. Sadly, its natural evolution, and the t'internet has bought an end to many things, personally, I'm all for technological advances though, unless its in bass guitars, i like mine old, and traditional!!

That's one of the nicest CS Basses I've seen, if not the best. -
Welcome Mike, don't know much about Peterborough, but just started a new contract there last month, so will be getting to know it more over the next couple of years (Certainly the A605 anyway!). Enjoy the site!
Mrs Rick must be very understanding! Wonderful collection there. Is the last one a Fender or a Bravewood (it looks very like the one with the shrunken tort guard that was sold on here by Kevin Lindsay a few months back)?
well, she is......to a certain extent, i'm running out of credits with her though i think. She keeps opening cupboards and finding another large tweed box that wasnt there before. I am trying to reduce the hoard. i've sold 3 basses and 2 amps over the past few months, but now i'm down to ones i simply can't part with. The last one is a '60 slab board Bravewood, i bought it off a fellow BC'er, not Kevin though, he owned it before though. I've since added some additional original parts I had from '60 (Tuners/bridge/knobs/thumbrest/chrome covers/upside down s/n neckplate), it now looks completely original, and plays amazing. I'm looking for a brown tolex case for it.

Fender Precision Chrome Covers Disappointment
It was quite fun trying to work out what your idea of hell would be to be honest... there were a few options but this got it in the end. They probably aren't bad basses- just everyone who wants one ends up doing mark king impersonations.
I'm sure they're great basses, just horrific to look at, and if its the one without a headstock, then it's even worse, snow shovel with strings. Arrrrgggghhh!!! Don't get me started on my idea of hellish basses, we'd be here forever, and I'd probably offend everyone on here!! -
Hmm, maybe it's just cos you're basses are all so old? Maybe like people they slow down over time? Maybe one of these would help you play faster? and slap? !
That is my idea of hell!!! Theres nothing wrong with the response and tone of old basses!! -
Me too - yet I palm mute at the bridge with a pick.
Palm muting at the bridge, and playing with a pick?, surely that gives you the least 'warm and sustained' tone possible??? -
theres something about a good funk bass player playing hard over the bridge though. Otherwise I can't stand the classic 'jazz bass, bridge pup for jazz players" sound
Maybe I play too slowly, and too few notes!!!! -
I respectfully disagree with you there, sir!
I'm sure many will. Tone is very much a matter of taste, and my opinion depends largely on the song. Generally speaking though, I've always preferred a more warm, rich tone, with sustain, and not so much the plonky sound, depends on the recording/song i guess. I love John Paul Jones' tone, and he played up near the end of the neck with his Jazz. I tend to play fingerstyle between the pups on a Jazz. -

Rick's Fine '52 replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
now this is something I've struggled with.... I had a jazz which came with the bridge cover on. And I set it up for my playing and tried... and not only did the flipping cover get in the way of my picking, the strings tended to hit the cover too as at the time I had quite a high action. Now Jamerson's legendary high action... must have had an upper limit if he was using the pickup covers....
You must play with the screws almost falling out the saddles if the strings were hitting it, there should be ample room?? Saying that, the P bridge cover (ala JJ), is much closer to the bridge, the J covers extend to beyond the first pickup, although I've never had a string hit it? -
Not the best photos I'm sorry to say but these are my brusts I don't know if the two Tbirds count as Sunbursts however I'm sure my FG Ric doesn't
Lovely!!

Rick's Fine '52 replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
They definitely look better with them on, but I always remove the pickup cover when playing, the bridge cover doesn't stop me doing anything. I don't like the tone much of a bass played at the bridge anyway, sounds dead! Jameson played with both covers on, and he did ok. If it stops you playing how you're comfortable though, then they have to go. If its vintage, keep 'em in the case though! -

Rick's Fine '52 replied to deanovw's topic in Basses For Sale
I dunno, I think that's a pretty good price for a MIM jazz, even if it is an unusual colour.
I think its a great price for a Mex! probably because its in the rarest colourway. £400ish seems to be the norm on period correct mex reissues. Good sale, if I had space, I'd have been interested in it for sure, it's mighty fine.
