1. Agree with others above. Although I think its at least a 1970. Pot codes will help firm up the year, the pickups could also be dated underneath. The green numbers stated don't add up for a precision of this era. Pbass example (s/n 277983) with the code 529129B. Breaking up the code we get:

5 = code for Precision Bass
291 = batch or lot code
2 = February
9 = 1969
B = 1 5/8 inch neck width (correct for a ’69 P-Bass).

For that money though, you'd get a nice transition decal Precision. It's big money, and not in great condition if you look closely at the body on the pic with the guard off, and it has a replaced pot. Personally, I'd be looking at much more guitar for this spend, plenty out there too.
  2.
did Fender even ship early guitars with straps? has your strap any logos on KiOgan?
Yes they did. You can see pictures from the Fender factory in the late 50's showing finished guitars with straps attached. They also appear in the Fender catalogs from '51 to present day. The reissues also have the same logo'd clasp as the originals, as that's the point, they are vintage reissues; this is a pic of my strap and cable from '58 (not the best pic), the same style of both that appear as the case candy in the reissues, as shown in the pic above.
  3. John, this doesn't have the Fender buckle, so i think this is either; 1) Not a Fender strap, unless its a pre-56 strap, which would look very much like this. 2) It could also be a 'no-mark' strap from '64 made by some other manufacturer, as you said it came with a '64 Jazz bass. This style of strap is very generic though, and was probably typical of the 50's and 60's. Most manufacturers though (Except Fender), used to brand their straps, Fender didn't start branding until late '56/'57. I have an original strap with my '52, and it looks similar to yours. My '58 Precision strap has the logo on the clasp, as does my 1/57 Precision strap. Not an easy one. Hope this helps?? Rick
  4.
Lovely....but I'd prefer a pristine one, just like Monk Montgomery's Mastersound bass.
Like this? 10/55 body and neck;
  5.
Sorry, not a huge Rik fan unless Bruce Foxton is holding it..lol
I agree generally, I think Ricks are the ugliest basses made, but the 4005 is unique, and beautiful.
  6. Was it the 'Live in Pompeii' thing they did??
  7.
Go on, get rid of that stanky Rik instead... would take up the same wallspace as these two.
I love that 4005, Mani has been my bass idol for many years, and I always wanted it, this is as close as i'll get. Thats going nowhere, its probably worth nothing anyway apart from the Ricky parts! how can you not love this, I'm very upset now! ;
  8.
I'd be tempted to sell something else - they are beautiful. If they were mine I'd be lining up to sell a kidney before I parted with them.
I know, I'm thinking the same, I'll never be able to replace them. I just need some space. I've only regretted selling one bass, and these will join that list i fear!
  9. Not many available to bench mark for prices. there is a similar Precision available on a certain auction site at the moment for £1250, not as early as mine, and the Jazz is far more valuable. I've already received an offer of £2k, but I think I would get more if advertised properly, and split the pair. I'm in no desperate need to sell, but if the right offer comes along then I will. £2500 would make me pay some more attention I think. Not cheap, but these are super rare, especially in this condition, and a matched pair. I saw a jazz offered in japan for £1800, not as old as mine, so with shipping and customs it would have been in excess of £2000
  10.
nice, did you relic the poly finish? how did you get the checking?
yes, its poly, the checking is done with great patience.!! PM'd.
  11.
That first photo is pure porn!
Thanks Clarky, keeping to the porn theme, they are a 'lovely pair'.
  12. Good luck with the bass. I assembled, and relic'd my own last year, delighted with it, saves my original from wear too. I have one of Johns creations (Not this one), and he does a great job. Here's pics of my attempt at a '55; Before shot: (after buying a Sting bass-for the contours, and a '51 reissue, swapping the necks, and selling the 'solid-body' Sting); After; Rick.
  13. OK, need to sell something, and these are looking favourite. I know how rare they are so I won’t be giving them away, and know I’ll regret it as soon as they’re gone, as I know they’ll never be replaceable. Perfectly matched pair, the pickguards look like they were cut from the same sheet. Impossibly rare examples. Based on recent sales and pricing on these, they tend to go for around £1200+ each. The Jazz is particularly rare though, so if I get a sensible offer, then they’ll go, if not, they’ll stay. If you’re looking, then you’ll know all about these examples. Unlike the ’82 Fullerton reissues, these were made using the original ’62 blueprints, sent over by Fender US, and are the closest reissue Fender ever made. The large Fender decal versions were only made for 2 months, before Fender US made them stop, and use the large Squier decal. Many of the ones still in the factory were stripped, and new decals applied before sent out for sale, some were already out there or slipped the net, making them very sought after, many of those even had the Squier portion of the decal sanded off as they were deemed unfashionable to have the Squier decal visible. The Jazz is believed to be an early prototype version to show at a German Music fair and to US Fender reps, in May 1982. It has many features not included on the regular JV issues. Jazz Neck date April ’82 JV 00*** S/N 3TSB Slab rosewood board Chrome covers Mutes Large Fender, small Squier decal export JV Believed to be early prototype version Has the earliest known neck date of an export JV, and this instrument is featured as such on the Fender JV website. Precision Neck date, May ‘82 JV0**** S/N 3TSB Slab rosewood board Chrome covers Large Fender, small Squier decal export JV Prefer to sell as pair, as haven’t got the heart to split them up, although single sales offers considered. I’ve received an offer privately for the Jazz, but before I make a decision, thought I’d give BC’ers an opportunity. Great investment opportunity also. These will be the pre-CBS basses of the future, except much rarer! Thanks for looking. I’m genuinly half hoping that no-one is interested. I will be very sad to lose these. Rick
  14.
Sensible, but when I was the OP's age *rambles on about the war* I never listened to any advice whatsoever, and I doubt the OP will, either! Hooray!
Agree, and I didn't listen either.....wish i had though, might have got a proper job!!!
  15. Nice looking bass, good luck with the sale? Where you based?
  16. Don't Fender already do a JJB Signature Precision, but they called it the Roger Waters model, apart from the 50's vs 70's decal, isn't it the same? Black guard, black body, maple neck?
  17. I think they (Stranglers) have some very recognisable tracks, and lines, that define a sound of the era, along with the Jam, Skids etc, but I don't rate them myself, he wouldn't be in my top 30 bass players. But its all a matter of taste........and many of you clearly don't have any!! Taxi!!
  18.
Have you seen this page Chris? http://www.scottymoore.net/ampeg.html
That's great, big fan of Elvis ('54 to '55), I have a very rare 10" acetate from July '54, never knew thIs though. I knew about the 'Amplified-Peg', but didnt know Bill used it. Great stuff, cheers.
  19.
But if they had millions of quid they wouldn't be bass players, they'd be guitarists, surely?
That's probably quite true in most cases, although I think Mr Clayton probably has a few bob, and a few basses of course!
  20.
I'm assuming Warwick's remain unpopular, and thus don't really count - leaving threee basses Why do we even need to have the distinction between collector and player? It feels like there's some snobbery therein, maybe from both sides - I don't see how one wins out over the other. Whilst my personal preference would be to have all of mine played, even if only a little, I can see how other people can find their paths to happiness; I'd find it abhorent that someone would own many guitars and never play them, I don't think my opinion would impinge on his or her happiness; and nor should their opinion impinge on mine. Utlimately, it's your own justification which counts. If you're at the stage of wondering if you have too many, you perhaps have more of the answer than you know
I agree, there shouldn't be any distinction between collecting and playing. have as many as you want. Its not about getting out there and playing them. There could be all manner of reasons why people dont all 'get out there and play'. As long as they are enjoyed, and appreciated by the owner, then thats good enough for me. As stated earlier, I think its a shame to have them stored somewhere externaly though, as they clearly arent being enjoyed, or played, but that again, is the owners choice, and he can do what he damn well likes. I've had my time gigging, I enjoyed it, most of it anyway, but have no interest in doing it again whatsoever, that shouldn't influence how many guitars i own. Its all about opinions though, personally I'm happy for people to do what they like. I love basses, so I could never have too many, and the amount I do own is only restricted by my cash and space. Alot of people on here, from what they say anyway, would only have one if they had millions of quid, fine by me, but I'd have shitloads!!!
  21.
Another picture of both my Sunbursts 1964 Hofner Violin Bass 1992 Rickenbacker 4003 in Fireglo
Macca fan by any chance?
  22.
Too many is when you don't play them. If you can't put serious time into one of them, then I don't see the point. Also, if you don't touch one from one month to the next, what sort of playing condition is that going to be in anyway.
Far better than the ones you play regularly is the answer to that! Don't subscribe to that at all. How does not playing an instrument worsen its ability to be played. I have a bass that i play all the time, and its constantly needing attention and tweaks, the ones i play less frequently need nothing. You think John Entwistle played all of his on a daily basis? The point is owning the things you want, and having them there for when you want to play them, if thats your interest. I think you're confusing this with how many do you 'need', in which case the answer is one. Do people who have a collection of 100 Toby jugs have to drink beer out of them everyday to justify owning them? No.
  23.
Is the truss rod the right way around for a 70s bass? Mine is at the headstock end, although its a little later than 72. Not sure when they changed this...
I assume yours is a bullet truss rod version, which would be right for a letr 70's model. This ones fine. If yours has a regular truss rod adjuster at the headstock, then it aint right.
  24. No such thing as too many. You should have as many as you want/can afford/have space for. If that's one, then great, if it's 50, then grrrreat. I have more than I need, but if i could afford more, I'd have them, no question at all. We all only need one though. I must say though, as has already been said, if you need to rent external storage space for them, then that might tell you something!!
  25.
My May 1964 Hofner Violin Bass,which I have owned since Nov 1988.
Nice one, i used to have an identical one, lovely basses, necks too thin for me to play regularly though, Very nice example you have there!!
