I've said it before and I'll say it again. Blocks have no place on a precision, or a tele, or a strat or anything apart from a jazz bass, jazz master or jaguar. Apart from gibsons.
I'm with this, as most will know, I'm quite the traditionalist when it comes to basses, blocks should be left for Jazzes, they should be pearl, either on maple, ala Marcus Miller, but then it only works if the bass is blonde or natural, or preferably on Rosewood.......classic. Black blocks on maple, just doesnt work, on any level for me, never seen a nice one. It's great that we're all different though, even if some of you are wrong!!
£5K for a transition P is a lot of money in this market. The 'celebrity owned' reference adds very little to the value unless there's a stack of authentication &, ideally, some recorded songs and/or videos with it. Definitely over-priced either way. . .
They have a letter from Larry Taylor, and videos are available on youtube etc for all to see. I've seen those videos though, and I think its a different bass, there is a distinctive mark on the one at Woody, and it ain't on the bass listed??

It was Larry Taylor, Canned Heat.
Great responses so far, which help me understand why people want such instruments. I am old enough to remember having the the 'Bells of Surbiton' catalogues in my teens, that listed all these old classics, which included 'Fenders' for around 60/70 guineas, 'Gibson Les Pauls' for about 60 guineas, and I think it must be a Beatles thing, but I can definitely remember the Hofner Violin bass was 55 guineas. Then there were the cheaper 'Watkins' range of 'Rapier' guitars which sold for about 15/20 guineas (I think), along with the 'Copycat' echo. If only I knew then, what I know now!
Indeed, same with everthing though isn't it! 4 bed detached houses selling for £2k in '69, Elvis sun records selling for 5cents in '55, now worth £3k etc, etc. Ferrari 250 GTO selling for £3k in 1965, now worth £2.5m......the list go's on. Now, where that 'build-your-own-time-machine' manual?? -
Whilst I appreciate the 'nostalgia' thing, surely a guitar/bass made 50+ years ago, can't be better than modern guitars/basses that are hand-crafted by the top luthiers of today for a fraction of the price. So why do people want to spend so much money on a bass that will probably have dodgy electrics, worn frets, cracked/chipped and 'dodgy' paintwork, neck/truss rod problems, corroded hardware...etc...etc...? Of course, I am only winding you up, but surely if a these old classics are that great, why can they not be reproduced to the exact specs, and therefore sound and play just as good? I know Fender produce models based on so-called 62's, 63's and so on, but are they as good, and if so, do they not satisfy the craving for that classic sound and vibe, or is it just the 'original' thing that is all important? I really am intrigued (but don't understand) by this obsession with vintage instruments. I am ready to be slaughtered on this!
Top end vintage are sought after for their rarity, and desirability, as much as the tone, playability etc. The same as an original Rembrandt painting, does it look any better than a good print, no, its exactly the same, but in this case one is worth 99p, the other is worth £85m. Its on the significance, the rarity, the desirability, and also to a certain extent the cudos of owning one, as well as the satisfaction of finally owning a dream item, after what may be years of hard work to afford it, and a long search in finding one. For what its worth, the originals, in my opinion do sound and play far better than the best reissues, but that's not what these are all about. -

NEW or USED... discuss!
Rick's Fine '52 replied to warwickhunt's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
eBay doesn't give you the option of describing something as "as new", or "like new". I don't have an issue with this, we know what he means. If something is genuinly 'as new', it shouldn't be described as 'used', which is the only other choice, as it implies not 'as new', if that makes sense. Just read the whole description of any item, and bid accordingly. No-ones trying to dupe anyone. Life's too short i think to be giving this guy a hard time over that, especially when there's far easier targets on the bay. -
Fender Maple & black block rarity!!
Rick's Fine '52 replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Hmmmm ... over £3000 for a bass that was deemed an unpopular failure at the time, and was never revived as a design even at the height of the "if it's old then it's good" retro boom. I don't know if that's considered a reasonable asking price in the market, but surely only a very serious vintage Fender collector would pay it?
I agree, i think its a case of the seller pitching high on the initial sale, as its such a rarity, there's no benchmark on price. Its one of those oddities that could sell within 30 seconds at that price, or not get a sniff for 2 years at $2000? Not exactly a saturated market, neither is it everyones cup of tea. It would have to be almost free for me to be interested. I wouldnt mind a nice dot neck sunburst with the chrome covers though! -
