I'll do you a nice deal for you Rick ;-) Thanks for the advice
If I had a 70's P, I'd take it off you in a second. Stick it on The Bay, with a reserve, or BIN with best offers and see what happens?
How much should I ask then?
The original dark burgundy ones are slightly transluscent when held to the light, they are quite rare, made for about 14 months, and not exclusively during that period, black ones were pressed too. I've seen them sell for £70, and also £20. You have to be kinda lucky that at least 2 people want it at the time you sell it, as with anything scarce.
When I see something like this on ebay I always wonder WHY they dont put it in a specialist Auction if it's genuine.
Coverage, simple as that. This seller sells most of his gear by other means, but uses eBay to generate the interest. New Kings Road, and Music Ground do the same thing here in the UK. eBay fee's are low on these high end stuff anyway. Specialist auction houses charge 25% +VAT. eBay charges a maximum £40. This instrument looks right to me, stunning in fact. Having said that, this seller does have a rather chequered history, or was it CAR?
Ive got one of these in my bits box. Way things are it seems it's valuable. The only provenance I have is pics of me playing the bass. It's not the usual black colour but a very dark burgundy. Worth selling?? What would you folks do?? Cheers Col
If you're never gonna use it, then sell it, and use the money for something you will, also, you'll be doing a fellow bassist a favour who maybe needs one. Everyones a winner.
I never got that must be old to be good thing.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that. It's about it being period correct. Its never gonna be better, just because it's old, it's a piece of plastic! -

As Molan says, if this is what you need to complete your original vintage bass, then you'll pay what its worth to you? If you have an all original '62 jazz missing the thumbrest, I can assure you that it would more than recover its $150+price, if you added one of these, and then had an all original '63. I think the main issue with some of these sellers, is that they strip out perfectly good guitars, because they can make more by parting them out. It should be a crime. If a guitar is broken, then fair enough, recycle the parts, but just to break one up for more bucks is a real shame. Hey ho, thats life. He probably makes bucket loads out of it? -
....and mine has the right finish, and it has the correct raised pole pickups, and.....oh, never mind. -
It's interesting to be aware about what one is talking about, but as I'm sure you know better than me, these are sliding scales. Initially, for me it's simple: if it's built to sound strongly enough volumewise to keep up with traditional builds, it's acoustic. If it's meant to have an acoustic effect on its electrical sound (or the other way round), it's an acoustic-electric. That's the simple stuff. From there one, we're lost, and a definitve answer is uncalled for and will be met with lots of challenges, both from musicians and from developing technology.
An acoustic-electric?? Now there's another one to the list!!
No idea on the slab body specs. I owned mine (and Precision serial no 0189) before the days of the internet and had no idea of the rarity of it. It may well have been stock parts but something about it made it an extraordinary bass to record with. The sound was really full and even, if you understand what I mean. I'd still own both if I knew now .............................. but then we've all been there. Good luck with the build and you'll have a particularly stunning bass when it's finished. The other different thing (if original but sold as such) was the case. We're going back a bit but it was sort of black/white weave to look almost grey and had pockets either side of the neck as it lay in the case. Never seen one like it before or since.
thanks Steve, some pretty scarce basses you've owned there, hindsights a wonderful thing eh, if only we all had a bit of that! -
Having started (and read) this thread, it's raised more questions than it's answered. I still think it needs clearing up, because I agree with the 'electro-acoustic bass if it's a double bass that is stock fitted with a preamp/pickup' on principal, but it's still using a pickup to amplify a primarily acoustic instrument, so I'm not sure what is what anymore. We need a truly definitive answer? the luthiers need to get together and define it for us me thinks!
I would never call a 'double-bass' an electro-acoustic bass just because it has a pickup added to amplify it, its still a double bass. An electro-acoustic bass is a guitar shaped acoustic bass, to me anyway. i didnt realise people had difficulty in defining it....until this thread! I'm sure 20 luthiers would all have 20 differing definitions too, as we all have, they are just people you know??

What on earth have they done to this?
Excuse a noobie question about Ps, but how many pieces of wood are there in that body? Looking at the picture of the bottom edge (nearest the control cavity; about the 8th picture down, I think) the wood grain makes it looks like there are two thin slices forming the bottom of the bass. Is that standard?
i think thats just the Ronseal staining, and if it is pieces of wood, then no, its not normal. -
