It's interesting to be aware about what one is talking about, but as I'm sure you know better than me, these are sliding scales. Initially, for me it's simple: if it's built to sound strongly enough volumewise to keep up with traditional builds, it's acoustic. If it's meant to have an acoustic effect on its electrical sound (or the other way round), it's an acoustic-electric. That's the simple stuff. From there one, we're lost, and a definitve answer is uncalled for and will be met with lots of challenges, both from musicians and from developing technology.
An acoustic-electric?? Now there's another one to the list!!
No idea on the slab body specs. I owned mine (and Precision serial no 0189) before the days of the internet and had no idea of the rarity of it. It may well have been stock parts but something about it made it an extraordinary bass to record with. The sound was really full and even, if you understand what I mean. I'd still own both if I knew now .............................. but then we've all been there. Good luck with the build and you'll have a particularly stunning bass when it's finished. The other different thing (if original but sold as such) was the case. We're going back a bit but it was sort of black/white weave to look almost grey and had pockets either side of the neck as it lay in the case. Never seen one like it before or since.
thanks Steve, some pretty scarce basses you've owned there, hindsights a wonderful thing eh, if only we all had a bit of that! -
Having started (and read) this thread, it's raised more questions than it's answered. I still think it needs clearing up, because I agree with the 'electro-acoustic bass if it's a double bass that is stock fitted with a preamp/pickup' on principal, but it's still using a pickup to amplify a primarily acoustic instrument, so I'm not sure what is what anymore. We need a truly definitive answer? the luthiers need to get together and define it for us me thinks!
I would never call a 'double-bass' an electro-acoustic bass just because it has a pickup added to amplify it, its still a double bass. An electro-acoustic bass is a guitar shaped acoustic bass, to me anyway. i didnt realise people had difficulty in defining it....until this thread! I'm sure 20 luthiers would all have 20 differing definitions too, as we all have, they are just people you know??

What on earth have they done to this?
Excuse a noobie question about Ps, but how many pieces of wood are there in that body? Looking at the picture of the bottom edge (nearest the control cavity; about the 8th picture down, I think) the wood grain makes it looks like there are two thin slices forming the bottom of the bass. Is that standard?
i think thats just the Ronseal staining, and if it is pieces of wood, then no, its not normal. -
OK here goes........... I know nothing of vintage Fenders but shouldnt there be a central scratch plate fixing hole? A
Yes, on Jazzes, from 'circa '66, not on P's though. -
Thats shocking! how can you sleep at night?
Quite nicely ta!

The only confusion or mis-interpretation, whatever you want to call it, I've ever witnessed is between a Semi, and an electro. To my understanding, a semi-acoustic is like an Gibbo EB2, Ricky 4005, Epi Rivoli, an electro-acoustic is like a Takamine or Ovation, basically an acoustic bass, with a pickup, allowing it to be amplified. All the others; solid body, acoustic, chambered, upright etc are obvious, and I've never seen them misused. Maybe just me? It generally doesnt bother me though, it's a bit like apostrophe nerds isnt it? We know what it should be, but it doesn't keep me awake at night!

sorry to be cynical, but you asked for opinions. The opening question referred to 'family life'. I could give lots of additional info, buy in simple summary, 10 months missing from 12 is hardly family life! Having said that, its a horrible situation to be in, and not enviable at all. I wish you luck and happiness....whatever you do. Rick

3-Tone Sunburst P-bass, Maple or Rosewood finger board?
Rick's Fine '52 replied to jackers's topic in Bass Guitars
From EvilBay, asking 20 000$... Instruments are made for musicians not for being hung on a wealthy amateur. Your replica is really cool, Rick. Serious work.
Thanks for the comments on my replica, it's a lovely bass. What makes you say the first comment, about the wealthy amateur?? -
oh right, not what I read, in print and someplace on here, Bass Doc maybe? meh well the other thread says body wood makes no difference!
Lots of myth about the slabs, some people say it was a unique type of wood, others have stated overwound pickups, higher output pots, 'blue vein' finishes. There's no evidence to suggest any of that, none that I've read anyway. Barry's book on the subject also suggests, from the examples he's traced, that the components were regular '65/6 parts. Also, in the whole book, there's no reference to the blue veined finish at all, and the examples shown, and that I've seen vary from regular aged white, to the tele bass slightly transluscent blonde used a couple of years later. -
As my missus said, this relicing thing is a fad, in a few years there will be a load of sh*te looking guitars and basses that no one will want to buy.
You may be right, although the Custom Shop have been making them for 19 years now, and now everyone's at it, so it may be the longest running fad ever. It wasn't around in the 60's because they all still looked new, so people didnt know what an aged guitar was, also, they were all affordable, relatively anyway. I think the appeal of a genuinly vintage looking instrument will always be around. I think the appeal of tat like many seen on eBay, as this thread shows, will dwindle rapidly though. As is obvious, I'm a fan of relic guitars, but all mine look right, and you need to take them apart to tell, I think there will always be a market for a good relic, especially as the price of originals is putting this type of guitar out of many players' reach. I think there's a big difference between a sh*te looking guitar, as you say, and a good relic. I hardly see a good relic anywhere, even Fender ones look poor close up, for the money anyway.
ah! you're making one of the slab ones, cool? tulip wood? or was it magnolia? I'm surprised you can't find anyone in the UK who would make it for you, theres a couple of folk on here who make bodies.
They were just ash bodied. It's the relic work that's hard in the UK. apart from Clive Brown (Long waiting list), I haven't seen any work that is good enough for what I want, unless anyone knows different?? -
Further bump but mainly to ask after the 66 slab. I did actually own an original one of those and the recorded sound of it was immense, wonderful tone. I had heard that the pick-ups were different on those (whether that's true or not I don't know). Either way, I took the original out of mine when I passed it on and put it into my #1 bass (which has been my number 1 bass for about 27 years now). Interesting in that it had a separate maple fingerboard and no skunk stripe.
By the way, pickups on those were normal '66. Lots of myths abound on these rare birds!! Once i have all the parts, I'll start a thread on the build section. Rick. -

I've already got great self-made/assembled versions of my '52, '56 & '58, so figured why not. I'm slowly gathering the parts, although I'm very choosy about the authenticity of components. So far, i have a maple cap neck (Hardest thing ever to source!), original 6609 pots, wiring and jack(Had to be 6609), original '66 blackguard with shield (Apparently came off a slab, which is believable, otherwise it would have the thubrest holes above?), original '66 neckplate, original '66 tuners, original '66 string tree, original '66 bridge and saddles, original '66 chrome covers, original '66 thumbrest. I just need the body and the pickups. The body is the easy bit, albeit the pricey part. I was hoping to get one made in the UK, but looks impossible to my specs, so i will go to the US for that. Hoping to have it all completed by September, can't wait to start assembling it!! -
