Just a word of caution. The Guma drive is NOT a good kit for a beginner. There are a few surface mount components involved - I wouldn't attempt that at home and I'm an electronic engineer with years of experience dealing with SMT! I have all the right tools at work so I'll be doing that portion there. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the darkglass sound, but I'm going to build both the Guma and Antique anyway (still waiting for payday Si! Not long left now...) as I could see me using them on occasion, just not enough to warrant owning either of the real thing! I'd highly recommend any of fuzz dog's bass kits. All the ones I've built have been great quality. Personal favourites of mine are the blueberry (mine's heavily modified and I'm planning to modify it more!) and musket fuzz clones. I'm reserving judgement on the Ezekiel as I installed the switch on the wrong side of the board and destroyed it taking it off the pcb! I found the RC booster wasn't for me - too subtle. I'd like to build the BB preamp at some point. I've a meatball clone (on a Risole PCB from oshpark, into a ready etched enclosure from Dan Minner in the states) and parasit studio arcadiator from Musikding waiting to be built, but time is against me these days...
Those 2x10" cabs further up the page are unusual - I don't think I've seen whizzer-cone drivers used together with a tweeter before. Usually whizzer-cones are used to extend the range of the driver upwards a bit without the complexity and expense of using multiple drivers with a crossover, so both together seems like a quirky choice.
I believe Accugroove did it with their 2x10 but I haven't seen anyone else do it....

I'm starting to think both drive kits in one 1590xx enclosure... With a Deadpool coloured etch...

The nothing to declare lane makes it $629 = £476 though. Still more tempting!
This is a discussion we've had many times! I now take it for granted that a product costing $X in the US will cost £X in the UK. I do like the concept of those tone controls, nice to hear they work too. @Opticaleye, will you have a chance to gig or rehearse with this soon?
This I know. Doesn't make it any less frustrating! At least it's not hamstrung by being fixed voltage per region like a Mesa...
There's now a UK dealer https://www.wembleym...0-bass-amp.html
Yeah, but that price is pants when it's $599 in the states and has universal power supply (100-240v). Next person I know heading to the styates might have to make a wee purchase on my behalf...

Ashdown little bastard & Barefaced super compact
Bigwan replied to Kevin Dean's topic in Amps and Cabs
As Mike has already said it depends. Standard pub covers, probably do ok if you don't mind a bit of fur. It won't be pristine clean. Hard rock/metal, I doubt it. I had an LB30 (and now have it's more sensible twin) and through a pretty sensitive 4x12 cab (Tech Soundsystems) I would have struggled with the loud stuff. If you don't mind a bit of dirt then consider pushing the front end a little harder to get as much out of it as you can. Doesn't take much - switching from parallel to series pickup config on the dingwall i had at the time made a big difference! And report back with your findings! -
In discussions with Tom for another custom. Going for a T-16, 66 and Tarkin in one enclosure with a master foot switch and order changing foot switch so I can swap the 66 and tarkin round.
Nice! What size of enclosure?

I'll order one after pay day I think. Might get the B3K kit too...
Yeah the Guma Antique is very tempting, just not doing much soldering at the moment due to the 5month boy lol. Might just purchase for a rainy day lol Si
I know all about it Si! I'm only really getting my head above water now and my boys are 3 and 4...

It might appear yet! I'd seen the B3K kit before, but not the Vintage so it's fairly new. The Duality might be on his "to do" list... You could try contacting the seller about a PCB. I did read somewhere yesterday that he offered the PCB on its own, but when I visited the site there seems to be only kits. I like that he offers enclosures pre-drilled AND pre-drilled with powder coating/printing. I'll probably go for the Antique kit and finished enclosure. I'd love to etch my own enclosures eventually but I find drilling a MAJOR pain!

Hughes and Kettner bassbase 600 and Peavey 4x10 for £300. Sire V7 5 string for about 320 new (from memory!). Heavy setup, but sounds it!

The Mastotron is indeed great - it's a Woolly Mammoth with a few extra bits. The pedalparts kit I linked above has the option to add the important input impedance control which is the best thing about the Mastotron. Makes it play nice with upstream pedals!
So could I! Very interesting stuff indeed. I had wondered, given the popularity of Darkglass, how there doesn't seem to have been much progress in terms of clones. At least not from the usual suspects (Sabrotone, Tagboard etc).
I find that odd too. Doug from darkglass did have the schematics and pcb layouts for the first version of the b3k (old knob layout) up on one of the diy pedal sites but he pulled down the schematics at some point. I have the layouts downloaded somewhere. I did spend a few hours trying to decipher them, but gave up when it dawned on me that I didn't like it enough to put the effort in! I know it had a LOT of buffering going on (tL07x with inverting input tied to the output) and only a single CMOS gate used in the design, but there was something unusual about the way the clean was blended in.
-
Think I might be building some of these! http://schalltechnik04.de/en/kits Although not the biggest fan of the original designs of the drive pedals, it was mostly a "I can see where they could be useful, wouldn't use them all the time and it's a lot of money in a pedal I'll only use sparingly" sort of deal, but at this price I could put up with it!!! The compressor is an interesting diy alternative too.

One of the woolly mammoth clones is probably your best shout. The Mooer FOG or the Little Bear BS1. Or you could build your own if you can wield a soldering iron (or know someone else who can!): http://shop.pedalpar...4_13549292.aspx But you could build a fuzz factory if that were the case: http://shop.pedalparts.co.uk/Filth_Fack!_-_Crazy_Germanium_Fuzz,__board-mount_version_-_vertical_config/p847124_13549341.aspx

Slightly off topic Gaz, but your band sound the mutts nutts! Really liking that bandcamp stuff. Been on a Russian Circles bing lately and that fits right in!
Each pedal has its own level control so should be ok thanks
Yes but results may be unpredictable without a buffer between the 2 outputs as you're effectively connecting them together if you see what I mean. Suck it and see though. May be fine! If it works this way then the series parallel thing IS easy, btw!
-
Thanks. Yeah, on balance, I think my mate who said it's easy doesn't quite get it, as I've had several very qualified people sayin it's pretty complicated. Maybe I'll have to forego the luxury of series and just get an ABY pedal
While an ABY will probably work to a degree (assuming you're talking about using it backwards i.e. the output effect 1 to A, output of effect 2 to B, input of the switcher as output) you should ideally have some sort of buffer/mix circuit to control the mix of the 2 signals.

Meshuggah in Dublin in January, Devin Townsend Project in Glasgow in March. Not much else on the horizon. Maybe Slomatics in Belfast in October, which is odd for me since they are sans bass player and I don't typically hold with such nonsense...
Hi Never done anything like this before, but thinking of exploring the possibilities. Basically I have two pedals which I want to be able to run either in parallel, or one into the other. I want to make a box with two inputs on one side, a switch determining "A+B" or "A into B", then a single output. Some reliable sources say this is very difficult, others say it's a simple switch. Anyone want to say one way or the other?
A little tricky, but not impossible! You'll need some sort of mix circuitry to handle the parallel option which adds complication. I think the people saying it's simple might be mixing it up with an "A or B"/"A into B" type pedal which can be done just with foot switches! The parallel option is the kicker.
