This is a timely thread. I developed tinnitus around September last year - I may have had a milder form earlier than that as I would occasionally hear the dreaded shriek I have now but it never lasted long. Since my nasty bout of sinusitis and rhinitis in September it's been constant.
I was at a 3 month checkup yesterday and I'm glad to say the sinuses are much better, but the tinnitus may be here to stay. I was concerned about how bad my hearing had become so the consultant had it tested yesterday. Sure enough there's a MAJOR drop off just above 2khz with the right ear a little worse than the left at higher frequencies, but the tinnitus is loud and clear in both ears at a significantly higher frequency than 2khz.
Having said all that I've found the tinnitus easier to manage than I first expected. For a few weeks it literally was driving me round the bend. Irritable would hardly describe it. My wife asked me quite seriously if I'd thought about doing something stupid... But I've found that background noise helps me ignore it - it's always there, but it can be ignored like you ignore any other constant noise. The wife's snoring is therefore proving very useful at night, ahem...
