1. We use the Behringer 2442USB which comes in at about £280. Very easy to operate and does the job well. We use the main channels and direct outs for monitoring; and to record rehearsals we hook up a stereo digital pocket recorder to a couple of aux sends. For live performance we tend to only put vocals through PA so its fairly simple to take them from the mixer.
2. My band has just invested in a new monitoring system. We opted for the Behringer Powerplay System. We use a Behringer 2442 mixer (which we already had) from our direct outs to a Behringer PM16 I Hub which converts the signals into digital sending the signal out to the individual personal monitors: Behringer PM16's, via a Cat 5 cable; as well as carrying 16 channels of music it also carries mains power to the monitor units. You then either plug in headphones, earphones or a powered wedge. We are amazed at the simplicity of the system.... a dream to set up. It had excellent clarity/sound quality, and is relatively inexpensive. The Hub cost us £125 and the personal monitors come in at about £174 each. The system can be further expanded to run as many as 48 personal monitor units. It also interfaces with the Behringer X32 system. In use: effectively each musician has individual control over 16 channels of sound with vol and 3 band eq for each channel. 16 mixes can be stored. There is a limiter, mute, etc. If you are thinking of a new monitoring system this is certainly worth looking at. It would also work well in a studio giving musicians control over headphone mixes. 3. here's a new review of FLUX:FX http://www.guitarmoderne.com/gear-2/fluxfx-first-look
4. A very comprehensive review........... http://www.musicappblog.com/fluxfx-review/
5. This is a brilliant bit of kit for so many uses, and for any bassist thinking about going the bass pedal way, the vintage card has some superb bass pedal sounds including Moog Taurus.......... All you would need is a McMillen 12 step or a set of Roland PK5's....... I hope you don't mind me mentioning this Kiwi, but there has been a lot of discussion re bass pedals and how to set them up etc on this forum in the last few months. Good luck with the sale. Regards, Paul.
6. Yes, been putting the app through its paces using the Alesis IO Dock 2. First impressions: great! I really like the package of the app, well laid out, can be used in a fairly simple way or if you want to dig deeper re editing you can. Five simultaneous effects, an xy pad and a sequencer to vary effects over time. This app is going to take some getting used to, as is the dock, but it is showing great potential. Sonically I am very impressed. I have been using a Zoom B3 a bit, and so am using that as a vague reference point. Flux doesn't have the amp/cab simulations and has fewer effects in each class, but that shouldn't be considered as a problem. As with gentle tweaking and storing one can get a good palette of sounds. What I do like is the ability to jump from Flux FX on my iPad to Garageband to my tuner..... Its good to have everything at hand. Using the 'Audiobus' app and others like it, it is possible to link Flux up with other apps which really make it very flexible. So you can drive Flux FX with say Moog Animoog synth app and send it either out to your amp or send it to another app on your iPad i.e. Garageband....... I'm beginning to see how it is a way of working as much as it is about a new effects unit. So far so good!
7. An Eastwood bass owned by Mick Karn is going up for auction on Ebay on 2nd January 2015 (10 day auction) Further details at www.mickkarn.net
8. Bose are portable but pricey but sound fantastic.........
9. Yes working with Flux FX: 5 simultaneous effects, full editable, presets available and a sequencer to record parameter change over time, nice XY pad for having fun. Not everyone's cup of tea, but for £13.99 you can't really go wrong.......... Regards, Paul.
10. Good to know that Alesis make a small adapter that means you can use dock with all iPad models...... (just took delivery of Alesis IO Dock 2 so as to use Adrian's Belews Flux FX app on my iPad.) otherwise would have had this one! Regards, Paul.
11. Reverb, delay and chorus all brilliant on fretless bass but used prudently. Delay can be used to thicken the sound, reverb to add presence and luminosity, and chorus to widen the sound. Listen to people like Mick Karn and you will hear the judicious employment of "effects"..... Regards, Paul.
12. Now got it for my bass, will probably use an Alesis IO Dock to connect up and will report on findings asap.
13. Check out Adrians Belew's new effects for iPad app that can be used for all music sources: http://goo.gl/zKNW9W
14. MXR M80, professional, rugged, reliable, versatile, etc.
15. Using the McMillen 12 step with an old Roland JV1010 with vintage keys card (includes Moog bass sounds) and more recently using a Moog Sub Phatty with the 12 step. Minitaur supposed to be good too.
16. I have used the Roland PK5's to good effect with the smaller Roland module JV1010. With the Vintage synth board there are some good Moog bass pedal sounds. I then graduated to the Moog Taurus 3's which were the bees knees, but in a custom flightcase weighed so much and needed 2 people to move them around. These days I use the Keith Mcmillen 12 step, (available from Juno Records in the UK) It's an amazing bit of kit..... much more flexible than the PK5's, cheaper, lighter, smaller, and I run them into a Moog Sub Phatty. I still have the JV1010 which is an option and I did consider the minitaur which is ideal with the 12 step, especially for its small footprint. Good luck.... Regards, Paul. 17. I have the above amp driving 2 SL 112 cabs; my question: is it ok whilst using the normal input for bass guitar to also use the return socket for a bass synth? Volume on the return socket seems much lower than the regular input. Your thoughts would be welcome, thanks, Paul.
18. Started using mine with a Moog Sub Phatty........Wow! Really hits the spot... and its good to be able to use your hands sometimes.
