Please recommend me a lightweight versatile bass guitar
dc2009 replied to mashup's topic in Bass Guitars
My Dean is the lightest bass Ive ever picked up, even lighter than a bass collection or Ibanez, I'm also contemplating selling it, though that's irrelevant I spose! It's a Dean Edge q4, and with the Bartolini pups it sounds good too, neck is as fast as you like! I would also recommend looking at warwick corvettes depending on your budget, not all that light, but lighter than a lot of mainstream basses, and warwick do say it is a '3/4 size' body, which helps a lot with the weight, balances perfectly too which is a must if you've got back issues! The second hand german ones are going desperately cheaply at the mo. -
Ever been persuaded to buy a bass by a band member?
dc2009 replied to megallica's topic in General Discussion
After I suggested the idea of a TB for the image of my current band, the guitarist, who hadn't ever seen one of these before (or at least remembered them), decided it would be good for the band, and encouraged me if I wanted to, but by no means pressured me into getting one. I think he gave me the 'yeahhhh, go on, get it' thought I needed to get it, and if anything I'm glad for it, cos I now have 2 and have my eyes on a third! -
I read that he didn't actually record with the Yamahas, and usually used Stingray 5s during that period. EDIT: Wiki seems to agree in part, but says that the JM2 was used on ToT and Octavarium.
IME the JM2 sounds delicious, though he had no part in production of the old stuff, not being able to hear him I think was down to production, and not liking his tone was I would say down to the amp/outboard fx selection and not the bass

What's the most over-rated bass, or bass related product???
dc2009 replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
My Marshall cab is great, 4x12 and I'd rather have it than many other big name cabs, can't speak for their bass heads though, which I've never tried, their regular guitar ones are fantastic though. Gotta say I don't like Ashdowns, I find the sound weak, flappy etc, just not my cuppa. Also gotta disagree with whoever wasn't a hartke fan, though aluminium cones provide the ultimate sound with a flat wounded bass, the amp and cones provide the brightness and the bass gives you some serious thump! Playing your bass higher stood up than the height it sits on your knee when sat down. BIG HATE: thru neck basses where you can see the through construction, and it disturbs the finish of the bass, right in the middle of the body - just hide it, it's seriously unattractive EVEN BIGGER HATE: basses where the finish is cut off in a line shape right about where the forearm rests during normal play, like on quite a few statuses, some sandbergs and numerous 'boutique' basses. - what is this for, other than to look fugly? EDIT: not at all a fender hater, but not a fan of people who swear by fenders as the best bass out there, and the mentality that a J and a P are all you need! - just not the case IMO -
looks lovely, enjoy it though i have to say, all these people saying they had a go on your bass before you sound a little bit like they might if it was about a female!

Quite frequently playing in pubs I find the start time is far from set in stone, but changable right up until you go on, sometimes I've been told, grab your bass you're on in under 30s because the DJ has already gone for a fag! In these situations, warm up before you go on isn't ideal/possible, which is sort of why I don't like fast songs at the start of a set.
-
In a rocky/grunge/whatever you wanna call it band (listen if you like, see my signature - sorry for the plug), we have the difficulty where we could play every song in a mid-tempo or fast way, and leave out the slow songs entirely, however, I think this means people leave saying all your songs sounded the same, and that you can't do anything different, which is why I think it's imperative my lot always throw in a slower song, or even perphaps the ska tune just to mix it up a bit
The output is very hot and the EQ is very powerful - it's hard to describe ! I'll do a recording and then I don't have to EDIT: Here you go, just some noodling but you should get the idea. Starts with neck pickup / both pickups /bridge, all EQ flat.
That sounds great! I've without a doubt heard significantly more expensive basses sound significantly worse IMO. I think I'd roll the bass up ever so slightly, but that'd just be my taste (or might be my poor laptop speakers), but still sounds great!
Just don't expect it to sound like a Jazz bass.
Don't worry, I won't! What do you say it most sounds like? Of the major brands, or is it a very unique sound of it's own?

Some very attractive instruments. IMO they always have old basic models which struggle to sell on ebay over here. They're not the kind of thing people typically search for, and as a result have very few or no bidders! They're new brand of instruments which are essentially made to order look fantastic (I just had a play with their guitar builder on their site), they only had one neck option for a 5 string bass, however, and I'd be wary of buying anything made to order from overseas when you have no idea what the neck profile feels like!
-
IMO play your best song last, your second best song first and work from there. The first song can be variable if you have something new/different to play for a certain set. Avoid songs with the same key/main note next to each other, and never put ones with the same chord progression adjacent to one another Be sensible with tunings etc the only thing i get arsey about is when i'm expected to play fast song after fast song at the start, especially at short notice, I always like a warm up

These overwater tanglewoods are looking more and more tempting, I want to try one, but the guy in denmark street didn't seem too keen to help last time i was there, not actually been to the bass gallery yet, do they have? EDIT: And congratulations on the pair, they look rather lovely together too!

What's the most you have ever spent on....
dc2009 replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
If I have to I go for the 1.5mm (i think it is) big stubbies, or something like that, they're big purple, and cost £1.50 usually, thick as anything -
Thanks a lot for that, but unfortunately the shapes of Thunderbirds are faaaaaaar away from my personal taste.
That's a shame, cos the non-reverse is really quite something! I hope you find something that suits though! One thing I would say is that from my opinion and experience with 5ers, it's not the string spacing that matters so much in relation with hand size but more the neck profile. Now my hands are relatively large and slender, but I struggled to get on with playing even a 4 string fender p bass, because i couldn't reach notes all that easily because of the super fat neck (boy did I hate it), if you go for a slim neck profile I think that will make more of a difference than the spacing IMO. Something like an Ibanez would be right up your street, but don't overlook Dean if you're after something cheapish.
Good grief!! (slaps forehead!)
I'm just not a fan, in the slightest. The only songs of theirs I've liked have always been covered better by another band IMO, their own stuff is just plain old boring.

I think his songwriting with the beatles was as pisspoor as his bass lines, in fact, I would go so far as to say the beatles are the most over-rated music act of all time.
-
I have no idea on numbers, but my corvette $$ seems like a very standard string spacing for a 5er to me. Now I would recommend the Epiphone non-reverse bodied thunderbird, a lovely PJ pickup combo, very narrow string spacing, rather rare, and deaver has one for sale on here at a reasonable price. I got mine not too long ago and i've rather fallen in love with it. Whatever you do, do not get this confused for a reverse bodied model (the modern shape, which is a lot more common), the string spacing on those 5er's is wickedly huge, I should know, I have one! EDIT: here's mine: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=140757 - pics are half way down the thread deaver's for sale one: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=116644&hl= his is older, which explains the headstock differences the other colour they did them in was a seafoam green, if that's your sort of thing
This is my practice rig: Bc Rich Beast, SWR-SM900, NOT my Ashdown 4x10. have never found a hard case for a Beast bass, so iv only played it on stage twice, unlike my Tanglewood (!) which is battered after serving me well through so many sessions of abuse on stage (because of which, it is not eligible for the porn section). The SWR OBVIOUSLY goes everywhere with me. (sorry the pic is on its side, il work out these darned technologies one day...)
Nice rig. And I assume that's your band's logo in your avatar, another great job by christophe! Did you ever meet him or just deal over the net?
there are some great basslines on telly aren't there ! i love the one in the theme to 'how it's made' on discovery
Great program!
-
I have a Programmable BDDI and I'd never look back. The deluxe version with dual input seems nice, but is beyond my needs not being a pro musician. I will now never go anywhere bass related without my sansamp, it is the sh1t! I wouldn't bother with the non-programmable version, but reckon that 3 presets are more than enough for any one live setting, and if you really need more in the studio, use outboards or take the time to change.

No reference to them on their website, I guess they don't exist anymore?
-
A Warwick. Second hand German made ones are very good for the money, and exceptionally cheap at the moment, particularly cheap models are standard corvettes, corvette double bucks and things like the FNA jazzmans, etc
-
I'm with Wooten, Geddy, Flea, Claypool, Burton and Jaco, the rest of them are IMO boring bassplayers who wrote boring basslines for boring bands. Nothing I've ever seen on the cover of Rolling Stone has ever persuaded me to pick the thing up, let alone read it, and the opinions of its readership has not done much to change this. The lack of Justin Chancellor I think is a bad one, he's written some great stuff. I'd also like to see John Myung up there, among others.

Fender Custom shop - commissioning a bespoke bass
dc2009 replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Bass Guitars
Never understood the want for reliced basses, I mean, I will happily relic whichever bass you get for you for significantly cheaper than what Fender will charge. -
Very much love the arrangement of most of the song, though not a fan of your take on the solo, but it's a minor niggle, and I could never do anything like this! Wish I hadn't started to play along to get to the harmonics near the start and realise I don't have sufficient frets on this bass! Would love to hear that sting arrangement and much more, he is one of the all time greats IMO.
