1.
The Corvette $$ 5 I had was awesome, just the neck I couldn't live with. Warwick seem to be more concerned about their brand than credibility with musicians. The older stuff is marvellous and has a great vibe to it (I still want an old Thumb NT5) but to me, they're more concerned with <insert this years signature model> than their core product.
I love the neck on mine, oh well, each to his own I'm still in the market (probably in a year or two's time) for a nice set neck warwick infinity, ideally a fiver. No effing way it'll be a new one given the prices they are at now though, I'm glad I got in whilst the going was still good. My $$ set me back a smudge under £1k with the custom top wood, I just priced it up again now and the price would be comfortably double that, and the issue is, for that kind of price, you can be looking at Modulus basses (that's what I'd look at), seriously good USA fenders and spectors, laklands and sadowskys, or if you want some German engineering, you can get Sandbergs for even less, and I think I'd go to them every time. EDIT, got mine in late 2006, for reference
2.
If it was me, I'd be looking at a pair of Thunderbuckers.
They look nice, but not my kind of thing at all I'm afraid, they sound thin and and a bit average to my ears. I also wouldn't want to remove the PJ set up on this bass. I have twin buckers in my other thunderbird, and my warwick can be set up in in various configurations, meaning PJ is the only configuration I'm missing from my three main basses.
3.
what pickups are you thinking of ? something more gibson-style ?
Well it's PJ, so maybe something more fender p lyte/special? Fender pickups may yet be a cheap option, failing that I'd just like to give it some oomph, I've already eyed up some EMGs, or maybe even nordstrands....
4. Thank you, Mark. Proper photos will be uploaded as and when she arrives. I've heard suspect things about the pickups on these so I may be looking for an upgrade at some point. That and I think I'll learn how to use a jigsaw accurately so I can fashion myself a new pickguard!
5.
Hard case if someone else is moving the bass and gig bag if I am.
+1 Dammit, Mark beat me to it by 11 minutes I do occasionally use my gator hard/softcase, a lot lighter than a proper hardcase and virtually indestructible too, I knew a guy who ran over one of his basses in his car once (american too so the car won't have been small) and he said the case and bass were both completely unscathed!
6. If you're certain you want new then get the epiphone tb pro-v. It'll only be about 380, it's got a thru-neck, a 7 piece maple and walnut neck, mahogany wings, upgraded bridge, pups and active eq, and if you get a new one it'll have the correct strap button position and won't neck dive one bit. I would probably still recommend a second hand german Warwick over this though. So, does it have[\i] to be new? And what do you want it for? Your new main bass, a recording bass, a backup bass, a look awesome on stage bass, or just a good allrounder?
7. Ok that's cool, will check some of that out. As well as doing the dubstep stuff, the kind of synth bass I want for my own sound is really hard to describe, but I don't think my boss cuts it. I'm sh1t at describing the sound, but I guess you would characterise it as having a super quick response, sort of like a modernised version of the bass on those old nintendo games, (f-zero etc). Anyone got any idea of where would be heading in the right direction?
8. Hi guys, I tried to do a thread search but it came up blank. Has anyone got some decent songs, and ideally a place for tabs etc (my ear playing is passable at best) to learn for DnB, or even more ideally, dubstep playing, that will help me trying to emulate sounds with my SYB-5? Thanks
9. That, I think, is a lesson for a lot of us! Glad you have found the right sound! Would you say the EMG PJ combo is good? If you see my thread about my recent purchase, I've heard the pups can be a bit weak, so I will look at upgrading them, perhaps to emgs?
10. Hi all, I have just become the proud owner of this beauty: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...T#ht_590wt_1139 Hopefully will arrive here soon. Should complement my regular Epi TB reverse body pro-V very nicely. This one is an overdue birthday and xmas present from my old man, so I haven't actually splashed out on two thunderbirds in a week! Anyone got any experience of these? I'd be really interested to know if anyone has any information on them too, there's none on the Epiphone or Gibson sites! Thanks, Dan
11. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...#ht_9243wt_1139 That. And no, it isn't mine. Plenty of other S/H warwicks are going for £500 and less, and the proper german made ones too, if you can get a $$ I'd recommend that too.
12. Never been to one myself but would love to attend any london one.

Keep it, bump :-)
14. Not a fan of the regular shape pickguard and angled pups, doesn't look right together, I think you either need to change the pickguard shape to be slanted like the look of the bass, or keep the pups in the normal orientation.
15.
I couldn't even be bothered to read all that stuff you quoted... I were defending my mate, stood my ground, vanquished all, crushed my enemies and now use their sorry skulls as candle-holders. Oh and my Jazz bass, I pulled it from a rock near Glastonbury Tor. Other than that, I should maybe mention I am not entirely devoid of knowledge on the subject of Internet Libel. Not a challenge of course But I forget, spoke to Big Mart earlier and he has found the name & address of the original seller, the one who faked up the item in question in the first place! So who wants to know? ficelles
Get your mate to post the bass to the guy, but with anthrax rammed in every cavity you can find on a bass?
16. On the self-styled expert note, I'd gladly label pete a stingray expert, especially given the huge amount of knowledge he showed. I guess it's no longer self-styled?
17.
Yep, agreed, so how about I rephrase the question: why is it that established bass players don't seem to gravitate towards Rics?
There are better basses, and I would say that no massive amount of pros gravitate towards any particular brand. Fenders are the mainstay of mainstream bands, your boring indie sh*te etc. Warwicks seem to go down well in the metal world etc but there's by no means an exclusive bass for a playing style or genre, which is what keeps all the brans in business!
18. Anyone who is at a stage where they play professionally for a number of decades is bound to change most things over the course of their playing career. Guys like Geddy and some of the others who have been named are in the kind of position where a) they can afford to buy a million different instruments, they'll get instruments thrust at them, to try, and hopefully then endorse. The same goes for amps and all the other paraphenalia. People get tired of the same sound though, so even if geddy was happy with his ric or whatever, i'm sure he tried the next bass which just sounder fresher and nicer etc etc. It's like any of us, we all fancy something new after a while!
19. Asides from songs like Billie Jean, where the bass is integral, as has been brought up, I don't think you need or should want to be reproducing the original bass note for note! If you play it exactly the same way every time, you'll soon get bored of it. And for a lot of songs in existence, the only way you will get note for note perfect is either having an amazingly good ear (to pick up every rhythmic nuance, dead notes, slides etc), or a transcription, and unless the song is markedly simple, even the best ear players won't get it spot on. If I'm honest my song memory has probably gone down from a couple of hundred to under 25. I've stopped playing standing up and posing in the mirror/rocking out to the CD, and am far more intent on playing the thing a lot more 'right,' bass on knee, with the tab on guitar pro or song on spotify, so I can go back and repeat some parts easily etc. As a result of this, I play along to a lot more songs, but if I play one, I probably won't play it again for another month at least, unless it is seriously fun or there are bits I've still got to work on. As a result, my memory contains a coupla chillis and maiden classics and not a whole lot more!
20. Wow, how lovely. It's clearly crying out for a lovely matching ashtray bridge cover though
21.
Alan Partridge reference
I know, hence my +1 for the reference And in relation to the not buying new thing, I will gladly eat my words. I'd have thought a new one would set you back a whole lot more, when the difference is that little, it's almost certainly worth it new. Now, if you're talking Warwick's where a new one will be comfortably 3 or 4 times the price of a S/H one, DO NOT buy new.
22.
would the current active MEC's be any different to the early active MECs? I've heard mixed things about barts. Any reason why they are the prefered thing to put in warwicks?
I don't know if there is much difference between the MECs, but my wick is a 2006 and the pickups are meaty and versatile, and I have heard that the force and volume out of the old ones are wimpy to say the least, but don't know at all which models this affected besides the fortress of the same era as yours. I have barts in a Dean edge (so not a high end bass by any means), two soapbars, and they are just fantastic, the whole thing, with a cheap basswood body even still sounds great. Quite versatile, but with a nice clear sound with a bit of oomph, I'd happily go and buy a set of those if my MECs broke for whatever reason.
23. Yeah I'd have to say bartos, given your description though I would have said the current MEC equivalents
24.
If its the factory originals then they're likely to be Epiphone strings funnily enough the string thickness was something I had thought about as well.
It's second hand, but I don't think by much. As I said in the OP, the thing is in mint condition, I would imagine someone broke the E and that got replaced, which seems likely? If it's those Epi strings, then that could be it, as I've never played nickels before, and they did feel 'soft' on my fingers. I've always played stainless steel, useless rotosound or warwick rounds, with the one set of DR coateds on my warwick and some steve harris flats on my MM copy, but I may have to look into nickel strings, what do you guys think of these in general? Also what do you think of the best strings for a TB, seeing as some of you have had them for a long time? The Pro series bridges are a bit of an upgrade on the regular, flimsy affairs, probably wouldn't be necessary to undertake a hipshot upgrade for mine, I hope.
25.
Cashback!!
+1 for the reference. How much did that set you back? And congratulations, I bet you it's just lovely. My pro-v arrived today, and despite a bit of volume imbalance due to being strung with a mix of strings, it plays absolutely beautifully.
