NEW BASS! Epiphone Thunderbird Non-Reverse 5 string - Photos Added!
dc2009 replied to dc2009's topic in Bass Guitars
She arrived this morning, and what can I say, she plays beautifully, and personally I love the look of her. The sunburst is the very deepest red at the edges in decent light. The neck is a bit thicker than on the reverse body Pro-V, but a damn sight less wide. The string spacing seems to tangibly decrease as you look at the basses from left to right, but I'm prepared to be completely wrong on the matter, though certainly, the nut width feels different. I think I will consider a pickup upgrade for this new bass, the P sounds meaty and full, but I don't like the sound of the J particularly without EQing it to give it some oomph (which I'm not averse to), but that will be some time in the future if it happens. -

Here are some pics I've just taken, apologies for the pisspoor light. -
A friend posted that on my facebook not too long ago, asking if it was what I did on weekends. Horrible video, nice bass.
Without a doubt, it would be the Chris Squire Electra style one that I designed and made out of a Warwick neck, MEC pickups, Hipshot bridge and tuners, John East U-Retro deluxe pre, custom made Shucker mirror PG, and a body I commissioned a mate to make for me and finished by me in oly white nitro. It's a fantastic bass that does everything I need a bass to do and it sounds wonderful. Anyway, it's my only bass now, so I'd be a bit f***ed if I let it burn
I can't decide whether I love or hate the look of that, Silddx. I think I'm erring on love, but I'm really unsure. It'd have to be my warwick, though it'd be a tough choice between that and my Trace head, it's as old as me, and they sure don't make em like they used to.

I was going to make a new thread for this, but seeing as it's to do with respraying, I'll put it in here instead. I've just received an unwanted vintage bass body from a BCer, it's currently sanded down to a natural look, completely gutted of anything other than the wood body (which is unknown). I'm planning on spraying it for a project. I have no spraying experience, but have had some guidance from mart already on the subject. I have three ideas in mind, so I would like your opinion on the following: • A matt white look, as per the during stage of mart's warwick, here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...t&p=1237094 (we have discussed this would be best achieved by applying a gloss then sanding back the shine, so the bass still had some protective coating) • A pollocked look, as per the stone roses guitar and various other things, I think I would like to do it on a gloss white backing. To be done properly I'd ideally like to fashion some wooden pickup covers and include those in the finish, though that may not be all that easy! • A Paul Smith-esque stripe pattern, such as this: http://www.jeeyun.com/uploaded_images/paulsmith-734057.jpg
So where can u get these? I would try one in natural!
So far as I know, from how the guy spoke on the phone, it sounds like he is importing them one at a time. That may be all he is able to afford, that may be all he wants to bring into the market (no need to flood the market from his point of view). The last one he had was in natural. They seem nice enough, but can ofc only be taken at the same value as OLP, Crafter, Shine, etc etc, it's just they've chosen a rather nice and slightly rarer bass to copy! I would imagine therefore, that there is a factory in China churning these out at a very slow rate, if anyone here had some chinese perhaps they could find out (doubt they even have an engrish website).
-
I spoke to the guy on the phone, who was clear in saying, you understand it's a copy right? He told me that they were very nice basses however (chinese made I think he said), and that he would be getting more in soon, and this looks like his next one (the last was natural).
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) was driven in my car from Aston Villa's training ground to inside the NEC building they were performing. Can't say I drove because I was drinking JD in the back seat of the car!!
Wow o.O Nice guy? -
My band are also up for any gigs. Please note we are an acoustic band, a bit like an MTV Unplugged type thing playing original songs with a sort of catchy Motown feel. Still that would make it 5 BC bands
That would be fantastic. My band are a bit more rock with some slight alt/grunge influences. The name Medusa is from way back with the early stuff when it was 80s metal (read as: cock rock). We're playing with an acoustic act on Sunday (see my thread - shameless plug), so we'd be more than happy to play with a range of acts.
me too, asking me to call him ... but after Michael's post I'm in no hurry to reply
Ditto. However, the three basschat bands idea sounds good. My band (see my sig) are also keen for many gigs in coming months, so we would happy to join any possible bill at the Barbican venue, that'd make it 4 BC bands! PM me if you're interested!

Come one, come all. My band Medusa are playing at Heroes Bar, Camden on Sunday, which you can find at 147 Kentish Town Road. The fun starts from 3pm, though we're unlikely to be on until 7ish. You can check out our music at www.myspace.com/medusauk or on Spotify. We'll be playing with 6 other bands, of varying genre, so there's something for everyone - the main band have just been signed to someone big (Universal IIRC) so come and see them for free before they're huge! The venue are making a day of it, weather permitting there will be a free BBQ, 2 for 1 cocktails (I can vouch that they're good ones as well) and various other drinks deals, as well as free entry all day/night. Be good to see some of you London lot there (and I know some of you live close too). Dan
Ha! Nice one! Marta and Natalia are both trained professional musicians, Ewa is punk rock through and through! SheMoans are the house band for the TV show "The Szymon Majewski Show", Szymon is pronounced 'she mon' hence the name SheMoans... Marta is also a demon on the violin too:
Awesome
You mean a pure clean smooth sub sound? Octave down -> Low Pass Filter = Pure clean huge sub
Again, I'm awful at describing this, the closest song I've found so far is in some Dubmood stuff, like the original Kenny the Toffelskater - the bass in that is getting on for what I'm after, sounds like a super quick response synth with a bit of delay to my ears, but my ears are poor - I get that the music is from cracking, but that doesn't make the sound unattainable!
Just don't ask about the 5'8" long bulge in the patio...
Somehow I don't doubt you here

wow, the first and third ones are seriously pretty, the second looks like her ric! But SheMoans for a band name, seriously?
Maybe the scarcity of new ones will eventually put the second-hand prices back up again?
Of good quality/not bashed about second hand ones yes - just like with vintage fenders, the prices go up for the best preserved ones of that era, even though you can still get them new now. Though they did sell a lot of basses in the boom period, and I'd imagine they will change hands many times until the prices start ramping up again, though right now, many people seem happy not to sell theirs for all that much, despite knowing that it is essentially a trough in the resale value of these basses, and that to buy the same bass new would cost them an arm and a leg!

Trace gear is fantastic, I'm a believer. The uni practice room (which my band uses weekly) has a markbass head through tc electronics and hartke cabs and I hate it, can never get a sound I like, and that VLE thing butchers my bass sound. Even runnign everything flat or off as necessary and using my sansamp today, I didn't like the sound particularly, just a bit, weak.

My guitarist/singer bumped into their drummer in a pub in Camden not too long ago, had a good chinwag with him. Apparently they weren't still around, I think they sort of stopped bothering after the second album (I think it was), they all have since been squandering the money they earned, particularly justin hawkins, on sw***y hotel rooms and a very fancy car, which the drummer showed my bandmate on his phone. He said they were getting back together nowish in order to release a new album and make some more money in order to maintain their frivolous lifestyles! EDIT: s w a n k y - really?
WoW, she's not too shabby. For blonde dreaded female bass players, I think pink had a rather fine one too. And 73Jazz - debra killings looked pretty damn fine too Any of you lot seen LUV play (unsigned UK-based band I think), their bass player is pretty damn fine...I sure hope she doesn't use this forum/recognise my bass in my avatar
Ibanez guitars, maybe! I don't think their basses were that prominent in nu metal. Aside from Fieldy and his K5 I don't think they had many notable players on the books. By the time Paul Gray got an Ibanez signature bass nu metal was well over the hill and Slipknot had distanced themselves from it (a progression which started with Iowa, you could argue). Mind you, their guitars have always been top notch. Whatever field you play in, be it fusion, metal, jazz or whatever an Ibanez is still the best guitar you can get and has been for years IMO.
An Ibanez Prestige labelled guitar is always a fantastic instrument, especially for the price. It's a shame their basses aren't a little more, interesting, I think is the word I'm looking for. I have to say they are undoubtedly solid - if someone handed you an ibanez at a gig, I don't think any player would struggle to get on with it or particularly dislike how it played or looked! Their Gary Willis fretless was lovely as well, only played one in a shop, and no doubt butchered it cos I'm poor at best with a fretless. IMO warwick still has rockbass sales with the metal (not nu-metal) crowds, the difference being now that the pros will use german made ones, and no bass player will buy a new one of those, but may settle for a rockbass, or a S/H one, whereas before, guys like me would save up for as long as it took to get a proper german one, which weren't as out of reach then as they are now.
Try adding more effects after syb-5 and buy expression pedal if you dont have I get some nice tunes out of it using exp pedal and overdrive+chorus after it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFY8Yw5Nztw I know its not wobbly, but i'd say its more like pendulum styled bassline
That's definitely a sound I'm after, but the main sound I'm after is seriously clean, and almost like a seriously bassy keyboard sound, goddamn this is hard to explain, I'm going to trawl youtube videos and spotify searching for what I mean. :-) I have an expression pedal, but it doesnt do anything, gonna try and find a spare speaker cable for it on friday, apparently that might make it work. :s

I don't know what this nu-metal association is, I know some nu-metal bands used warwicks but ibanezes were far more prevalent in that scene. Having seen many of the top touring metal bands of the past 8 years or so, I can say that warwicks were very much used in metal bands. Whilst a few of the power metal bands had bass players with high end jazz-esque basses, and some of the most popular metal bands (thinking children of bodom and behemoth here) had ESP's through the endorsement deals the guitarists had, warwicks were frequently used by many players of the less significant bands, though think of Marco Hietala of Nightwish, the guy from ensiferum (who has recently changed from warwick to ibanez) who both played warwicks and were heavily involved in the vocals side of things, and were regularly playing in front of crowds of 50,000+ at festivals, in addition to their own gigs ofc. There was also wintersun who were starting to get big, and I think vortex of arcturus/dimmu borgir also used warwicks on occasion. I think many of their sales came from giving these guys endorsements, as pretty much ESP or Warwick were the bass to have in the metal scene.
