1.
Yes, like 'Mississippi'. Or 'penises'. :-)
Yes, I don't like those either. American Rivers! Bah!
2.
'Bass Player' or 'Bass Guitarist' is fine with me, but 'Bassist' is on the long list of words I don't like, for some reason.
There are too many ss's in it. It sounds all hissy.
3.
I'm New to bass, so for me it's because it's deferent from everybody else just learning the guitar. I think if you play bass there's something about ya and I like to be different
I can relate to this. There's something about how it sounds so low and powerful, and the instrument looks so elegant with its long neck Like you, I am relatively new to this (although it's been 5 years now). When I'm playing in public I sometimes can't believe I'm doing it. It feels as though I'm in a film or something. I love that feeling!
4. I feel quite chuffed if anyone uses any of those 3 terms to describe me! I think of myself more as 'bumbling amateur who's trying to keep up'. But, if asked, I would describe myself as 'bass player'. It sounds a bit more rock n roll than 'bassist'. Don't know why, but it does. (JMHO etc) If asked what instrument I play, I would say bass to a musician but bass guitar to a non-musician. Otherwise they imagine me playing double bass in an orchestra. If anyone uses different terms I really couldn't care less. As long as we all know what we're on about, why get excited over it? (Interesting question though).
5. Alas I shall have to remove myself from the list. I've been invited to a wedding, which is going to involve pretty much the whole weekend. It's the wedding of a dear friend and former housemate of mine, so should turn into a bit of a reunion of those of us who were all hip and trendy in Slough in the 80's (yes, that is possible!) It was like 'Friends' personified, lol. Anyway, back to the Bass Bash, I'll have to duck out on this occasion but hope to see some of you at LBGS. Updated list is now: this 1. TheGreek 2. 6. To say a bit more about the master classes, they can vary a lot in format. I've seen Q and A sessions, demos of technique, performances of new or old material with a bit of chat in between, or occasionally more of an actual class on a specific topic ( eg Yolanda Charles on singing and playing together). The queueing can be a bit of a drag, but you can have some interesting conversations while waiting! And yes, you can meet them afterwards if that's part of their agenda. You have to queue again though! I queued for Peter Hook, but it was worth it. He was really nice.
7. Don't wait till you think you're good enough to join a band before you join a band.
8. A passive bass, an active bass, a combo and a practice amp. That's all I've got and all I need. I really don't yearn for anything else. One of the reasons I stopped subscribing to BGM was that I realised I was only reading half of it. Barely glance at the gear section at all. That's not to say I don't enjoy a little noodle on some other gear at various Bass Bashes (as Norris will attest, lol). But I don't deeply long for it. If you're looking for the (amateur) psychology of it, I guess I'm more into experiences rather than things. I spend way too much money on holidays, food and drink, theatre tickets, weekends away and that sort of thing. But I don't have that much 'stuff' in my life.
9. Spooky. I was playing K in the car today. Hadn't listened to it in ages, mainly because my Ex poisoned my mind agianst them! I was just thinking what a bloody good album it was, despite what my Ex said
10.
Love Gilbert since 70's. A sing a long in the car too with the kids! Glad he's still able to write new material. For what it's worth, love Dean Friedman too!
Dean Friedman is a legend. Saw him at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012 and have been a fan ever since. Perhaps we should start a separate thread :-)
11. I haven't got any gigs that night. But if anyone else has I'll come along as well. :-)
12. I used to be very metal, but metal has moved on and left me behind. 4/10. I'm just some sort alloy now. :-(
13. And one from the world of theatre.. 'The set design was really brilliant'.
14.
Well thats my ticket booked for Saturday - only 2 live stage events though - there is going to be serious jostling for tickets!
Sometimes they add some more at the last minute. We live in hope! :-)
15.
It's not all about us, you know.
Yeh but most of my friends are musicians or bloody actors and comedians. I'm supposed to go to all their lamentable performances, but do they come to mine? Not often (rolls eyes).
16.
Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
Plus one for this! So glad you mentioned it. Should have been a double album IMHO.
17. 'You looked as if you were enjoying yourself' = 'You sounded like a complete amateur, but at least you kept smiling'
18.
Ghosts don't drive trucks.
Ooh, I bet they do though! And it would be a great idea for a song. Sort of cross between 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' and 'Willing' (Little Feat). :-)
19. Aw, lovely story, Stance :-)
20.
When I went to see The Who a couple of years ago at the NIA, the support band's bassist after every song played his open strings "bink bank bonk bunk" for no apparent reason. Unless it was to make sure he'd still got all four strings, I suppose.
Oh dear, I think I do this all the time! :-0 Not at the NIA though, ha ha :-)
21. I know I've mentioned it before, but I can't let this thread go by without a shout out for my dear, late friend Lana Newman. She's the girl in the bath with the snake in the Welcome to the Pleasuredome vid. Such a beautiful, funny and kind friend. Alas, taken from us too soon. :-(
22. 1. TheGreek 2. Bassface 2k10 3. Billy Apple 4. bluejay 5. Skinnyman 6. gary_mac 7. such 8. Bottle 9. seashell Here's a preliminary list. Looks like I will be able to make it.
23. In my last band, I also used to take a capo for the guitarist. His cat wee'd on his guitar case and the capo therein went all rusty. At least that was his excuse for never bringing it.
24. I have a make up bag which contains tuner, earplugs, screwdriver, batteries, small digital recorder, allen keys, spray on liquid plasters, a large marker pen and picks (even though I don't use them)! For rehearsals I also have water and an air freshener spray. Essential to mask the smell of rock n roll. :-)
