  1. Very easy to segue into Sweet Home Alabama and that Kid Rock song if you're feeling adventurous for a party set😉
  2. The main thing I remember about my music lessons are sadly all negative. I was an early developer and my voice was breaking much earlier than any of the other boys in my class. I didn't take a shine to the music teacher, something seemed a bit off to me. He obviously picked up on this and insisted on picking on me to sing solo at various points knowing full well my voice was all over the place during the transition from prepubescent to adult voice. After I left school I found out he'd been 'let go' by the school after being found touching up pupils in a store room, not sure if the police were involved or it was all brushed under the carpet (as sadly was often the case back then). He wasn't a very old teacher so very probably still alive hence no names. I've usually been able to spot a wrong un fairly quickly to this day.
  3. Used to play it a lot (and do the lead vocal) in a little functions band with workmates years ago and often cropped up at open mic sessions. Never sounded anything like Winwood though, unique voice.
  4. The gig planned with the blues rock trio on 29th has bitten the dust, apparently been a bit of a local spike in the area where venue is. The guitarists wife is on the vulnerable list so I think he's a bit relieved not to do it tbh.
  5. RIP but in some ways it's a surprise he lived as long as he did, certainly lived life to the full.
  6. I've said it in other threads before this program was a godsend when I started getting seriously into covers bands and trying to get decent sounding versions learned quickly. I could pick stuff up about 3 times as quick compared to looking at tab or by ear alone. It's probably been slightly surpassed by YouTube demos these days but for years it was my go to source to get started.
  7. I already have existing gp files of the song, I meant if someone could create a gp file of Bilbo's specific transcription so I could compare the two. Not a big deal, I'm unlikely to change the way I play it much after 15 years in any case.
  8. Don't suppose anyone would like to create a guitar Pro file of the transcription?
  9. Yes, I started picking up some of their albums a couple of years back, can't recall where I got the tip off from. They have been featured recently in Prog magazine (110). I've had the new album downloaded for a while but not listened yet, I have a backlog of about 40 unlistened albums that I'm working through! Blame mp3va...
  10. I havent seen Yes in the flesh since CS passed away. Having said that, when I watched some youtube footage of the current incarnation it didn't seem like Billy Sherwood was a particularly weak link per se, just that the whole band as a unit look a bit tired and laclustre now. In fact Sherwood was working hard to fill some very big shoes and generally doing a pretty good job. Wont be rushing to see them though, perhaps time for me to just remember the gigs I did see and play the old albums.
  11. It can be simplified to some extent whilst still retaining the character of the song, just take it slowly. Verse, bridge/prechorus, chorus. There are some subtle variations going on but no one is likely to pull you up about it after a gig, unless Neil himself happens to be in the pub.
  12. I can't remember if he was in Steve Hackett's band yet when I saw him on one of his early revisited Genesis tours. I definitely saw him very close up in a small venue with It Bites. Even though the general band vibe didn't look too healthy Mr Pomeroy smiled his way through the gig and was a consummate pro.
  13. I couldn't justify the amount being asked for tickets when they played Nottingham so I didn't go. Someone has subsequently bought me the DVD so I'm settling for that.
  14. Can't sight read even now but I tried learning from 'teach yourself' books from library and then once I grasped basics I'd write the notes out longhand from sheet music books also borrowed from library ( no tab then). I vaguely recall Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Living In The Past being among first I could do all way through. I think Peaches was probably the first thing I tried to work out just by ear.
  15. Not sure in these politically correct times if this is the ideal role model but...
  16. Bit screechy but that girl on the early Rush albums. Hang on, what do you mean? 😄
  17. Her first solo album has been out a while, worth a listen if you've not already got it.
  18. Loads of prog bands with female vocalists.
  19. He sadly wasn't a well man for a very long time. McVie always said he wasn't the same person after being spiked with LSD back in the 60s. I saw him not long after he first resurfaced after being away a long long time. He was rusty and a little confused but could still deliver that distinctive tone. His rhythm section that night in a tiny club was Cozy Powell and Neil Murray. Slightly surreal. RIP Man of the World.
  20. I've got one, think it was about £300 second hand but in perfect condition, gigged it a couple of times in a trio where we include some blues rock stuff eg ZZ Top. No nonsense bass.
  21. I'll chuck these in the mix in case no one has mentioned them Annie Haslam (Renaissance) Julianne Regan (All about Eve) Janis Ian Heather Findlay (ex Mostly Autumn) Christina Booth (Magenta)
  22. Some bands have included lyricists who didn't actually perform, eg Procol Harum.
  23. The drummer of the 3 piece second project I joined late last year seems keen to honour a gig we have in late August. The gig itself on paper doesnt look too problematic as its outside and hopefully we can get sensible social distancing in place (onstage that is, it'll no doubt be a free for all with the punters but im not going near any of them if i can help it). I'm more bothered about getting pushed into rehearsals. I'm due to go on holiday mid August and the gig is 2 days after I come back so any rehearsal will have to be early August and I'm still not convinced Pirate are up to snuff, its our only real option to rehearse as a trio.
  24. Grew up in Cleckheaton and mum still lives there so got to hear about the food processing place there.
  25. One of my bands doesn't have any pressing gigs on the books and to be honest I'm doubtful we will be at a level I'd be happy about gigging this side of new year. We still have no plans to start rehearsing yet so I'm expecting a long rebooting. It's not beyond possibility that the band will fizzle out entirely.
