Was hoping it might be Bilbo tbh... Don't really like that arrangement, if there was a song that absolutely does not need horns it's that one.

BBC show looking for 'best part time band'
KevB replied to redbandit599's topic in General Discussion
If this kicks off another 'professional' v 'hobby' band thread I think my brain will implode. -
Fond memories of the Odeon, it was a chronic waste of a building letting it go idle after it closed as a cinema in 2001. I heard at one point it was being touted as being converted to a club/live music venue to rival Rock City which would have been great as long as access for gear load-ins an outs was organized properly. The location as far as public access is concerned couldn't have been better. Then again when you look at how the concert hall has struggled over the last 15 years to get bigger acts in you wonder how successful it would have been.
-
Thought it looked familiar, only proper old type of cinema left locally with that much space to perform in front of the screen. Of course cinemas were fairly common liv music venues in the 60's, not sure if the Savoy was ever used for it seriously though, there would have been others in City centre more suitable I guess.

Did you film the video at the Savoy on Derby Road by any chance?

I have to say in retrospect they look more of a 'proper band' again after DV leaving, it was almost getting like the other four were his backing band. I wondered if it was the end when I saw them at High Voltage in 2011, Ted Leonard coming in at short notice and barely time to get into it, looked uneasy and it spread to the others a bit. Neal Morse coming on as a guest steadied things for that show. Then I saw them in Sheffield on the last tour and Leonard had really grown into the part and looked so much more comfortable, a much better singer than I'd credited him with before. End of the day it's modern prog influenced by classic70's prog, take it or leave it. All excellent players though.
What time roughly were they on? I'm working till 8pm tomorrow but my works pretty damn close (maybe 4 minutes walk) from the venue. Would quite fancy going.
In my case it was an early show because it's a University city and venues want to make money twice over in same night so shove bands on stupidly early, get em out then get a load of students in for rest of night - kerching. Stage times at rescue rooms were roughly band 1(sorry cant recall name) - 6:00 Synaesthesia - 6:45 Spocks Beard - 8:00-10:00
...and some are hard-boiled. Others are definitely fried. A minority won't come out of their shells...
These yours or did you poach them from someone else?

Well unless I've misunderstood the site that's what it seemed to be indicating when I went through a dummy run I got these messages in a sort of FAQ; Where am I going? The address is revealed the day before, on this page and we'll send you an email too. Who's playing? The lineup is secret! You'll discover who’s playing when you get to the show. These might be for free events maybe?

Shame you don't live closer, I have a small Roland MIDI controller keyboard that I never use (cant recall model, may be an A30) you could have had it on loan if you could find a sound module to link it to, doesn't have any inbuilt sounds of its own sadly and I need my sound module for my current project.

I don't do a lot of trading at all but it does smack of a bit 'off' to me on a forum. I think if I really wanted to make a mark up the least I'd do is put it up somewhere else like eBay even though the result is the same. A lot of the marketplace forum seems, to me at least, people trying to get top dollar as sellers but every buyer looking for a bargain (its human nature). Then we moan because there 'doesn't seem to be much gear shifting'

I've done some thinking for the 80's and I've come up with Marillion and It Bites so I'm going to leave it there before I talk myself out of it.
-
I tried it for my city and for the next available date it says that you get the venue name a day before but they don't tell you who the artist is, you don't know until you get there. It's the kind of musical lucky dip that I can probably live without tbh.

Well there are sort of 3 phases of SB and I'll pick 2 albums from each. There's the version that was dominated by Neal Morse, of which I'd recommend Kindness Of Strangers and Day For Night. Then he left and the onstage leader became drummer Nick d'Virgillio and a good representation of that is Feel Euphoria and X. Nick left and currently Ted Leonard fronts the band and they have only done 2 with him singing, Brief Nocturnes & Dreamless Sleep and most recent The Oblivion Particle. They are all recognisable as the same band despite the personnel changes. Very much influenced by the classic 70's prog acts but not sounding overly dated (to me).

Spent a lot of the eighties catching up with stuff I still hadn't heard that was recorded in the 70's or with stuff recorded in the 80's by artists who were probably at the peak of their careers in the 70's.
-
If you're going to see them on this tour I'd definitely get the latest album (Oblivion Particle) as a lot of the set is from it and also have at least a listen to the previous one. They are also covering some Neal Morse era stuff but I don't want to spoil it for anyone, those desperate to know can look it up on setlist fm.

Does one become conditioned to a certain sized speaker
KevB replied to obbm's topic in Amps and Cabs
With my last cab purchase, the overriding factor was the depth of the cab - anything more than 14" and it couldn't fit in the space under the stairs.
This is partly why I stick with my Trace 715 combo, considering it has a 15'' driver it is surprisingly shallow, the SWR 2x10 ext cab I have noticeably deeper. -
You mean like "extended range bass" (ERB) which is what they're currently referred to as?
No idea they were tbh don't call seeing it but then I don't think any artist I'm really interested in uses them. Ah well, as you were...

Last night in Nottingham. Watching five very talented blokes all pulling in the same direction can be a joy to behold. Set list (as often with these guys) a bit perplexing at times but as they kept saying they put it together before releasing the new album and didn't know which songs would prove popular from it. Oh and Dave Meros seems to have dyed his hair a bit of an odd colour. Enjoyable evening, catch them if you can on one of the remaining 4 UK dates.

There will always threads like this while we keep referring to these instruments as basses. They really should have some sort of title of their own like 'extended range guitar' (ERG) or something. The grey area would be in deciding at which point a bass becomes an ERG I guess. If, purely hypothetically, you could make something like a double bass but which could cover the range of a viola and a violin I doubt many people would call it a double bass.

That's Whitby in the video. Possibly the best bit about it, other than a fleeting glimpse of the delightful Maggie O'Neill.

Best of luck with it and the gig on 11th.

Mccartneys bass palayign on Something - Wow!!
KevB replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
Used to play it (well, a version of it) backing a bloke doing it on uke at jam sessions when I was in a house band. Enjoyed playing it and I've always liked the original line, busy or not. I never did any extra bits on final verse, just played it as earlier ones whereas i think Mcca does put a few more frills on it. -
I seem to be able to get away with sitting down to practice but stand up for gigs, doesn't usually bother me. The bass is pretty much in the same position either way though which helps. I practice more standing up at the moment because I've started using midi pedals again and always play those standing. You cant really play them seated and play bass even though they are originally designed to be played sitting down by a keys player! Of course there will be some youtube clip somewhere of someone doing Rush stuff whilst sitting down!
