1. T's post reminded me I did once learn Aqualung for a bit of a laugh and though I got it to sound reasonably close to the original once I found a good transcript of it I realised that theres was a bit more to it than I thought (which didn't come as much of a surprise!). I had more problems with some of Glascock's basslines from the mid 70's though. I had to give up on 'Acres Wild' as my timing was all over the place.
2. Help! by those whacky 60's scousers. I'll be expected to do bv's on it so I'm actually concentrating on the vocals more than the bassline which seems pretty straightforward.
3. The whole thing won't have any credibility for me until they do the decent thing and get Deep Purple in there before any more of them die.
4. Well it finally happened on Sat. The previous gig we'd played at the same venue had resulted in me being forced into a tiny playing space with headstock up against the side of a PA speaker. I'd pointed out to the singer that if he really wanted me to stay there it was an accident waiting to happen. Sure enough I started one song on Sat night which didn't sound right at all, singer turned round giving me a questionable look so I look at my fretting hand to see if I was playing the right notes. Of course what had happened was I'd inevitably finally caught one of the tuning ears on the side of the PA bin and knocked it out of tune. Managed to recover playing the bassline avoiding the problem string and retuned at the end of the song. It threw me a bit though and I was then retuning between every song just in case. Might suggest I set up on opposite side of the stage next time though the guitarist will just have the same problem as me as we both play right handed, at least his guitar neck is a bit shorter than mine!
5. Never really been tempted by a cruise but if I had the resources I'd be tempted by one of these. I recall Francis Dunnery has organised something like this in the past where he also did guitar masterclasses in addition to performing. It's sensible aiming it at the nostalgia acts as their fanbase is more likely to have the time and money to do this sort of thing. Got to make a living somehow.
6. Never considered not wearing them, couldn't see anywhere near enough without them, can't be bothered with contacts. No one in the audience are there to see me anyway so it's hardly an issue.
7. My itunes library currently has about 75000 tracks listed. My brain wouldn't be able to take it, honestly.
8. Re the dreaded Freebird. I vaguely recall singing it in rehearsals for a school band that I never got to gig with but I'm stumped if I can reall ever actually playing it in a band as a bass player. I'm sure I must have noodled along to it on itunes at some time but I don't think I've ever actually sat down to learn it as such. It made me realise that pretty much the only thing that does drive me to learn any song these days is if I need to know it for a gig or jam session. Need to get more focused and learn some stuff out of my comfort zone.
9. Remarkably little so far in the current band. I've offered to improve the sound by dusting off my midi pedals to add a bit of keyboard sounds. However we never get enough stage area to make that practically feasible (I don't even get enough room for my monitor so I'm providing bv's with absolutely no idea what they sound like out front) so I've had to put that on hold. I've suggested new songs to try but the band never seems to rehearse to actually work up new material. I've been sent emails to give input on a new band website and to check the band's google diary. All emails so far have been lacking vital information to actually allow me to see the sites. I send emails back pointing out the errors in the emails sent to me but then nothing seems to get done to rectify it.
10.
I like to wear a hat now and then. This one was a nice summer gig, open to the elements - I thought we'd all agreed to wear something colourful. So, I turn up sporting Hawaiian short, linen trousers, Panama hat, shades. Everyone else turns up as though they've just come from the beach! I look like I am part of a different band. In, fact, I am now!
Well it was never going to be cost effective when you have that guy in the band turning up to play left handed air DB
11. Although they still seem to have the Rumble combos, bass pickups and strings in stock.
12.
Imaginos - Blue Oyster Cult
I just knew someone else apart from me in this country bought that one...
13. The band play this venue fairly often as a sort of residency. Our last gig there had to be pulled so we've ended up playing on a Sat we wouldn't normally do so thought I'd send a quick post. It's all covers with a fairly strong leaning toward Brit Indie (Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Pulp, Stereophonics etc) with a few older ones chucked in (Jam, Beatles, Kinks etc). Always worth a chuckle at my attempts to make 'Going Underground' sound remotely identifiable with Bruce's original line. Free entry. Here's the venue's website (though it gives a different band for 20th I'm reliably informed we are in fact playing, I don't think they update it very often!) 14.
About ten weeks. Started the second year of uni in September and was told by friends that they were starting a band and I was on bass! Quickly sourced a second hand cheapo bass and amp to learn on, and our first gig was the Halls' Christmas party. Went down well too
Actually, come to think of it I think my first 'proper' gigs (not jam session/open mics) were xmas parties too. Cobbled together band from work collegues. At least we were just playing to other work collegues and associated other halves, no real pressure
15. Usually I've found Geddy's bass sound to be OK recorded but recently it sounds a bit of a mess live. However there are times when I don't think his particular tone for an album has necessarily suited the material. I was listening to Roll the Bones the other day and although I think that burpy tone he had on things like Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows works well for that material it didn't seem to fit for RtB so well to me, think I'd have preferred something grittier.
16. Another compilation-o-phile here. Since cycling to work my annual mileage has plummeted and since I have a 6 cd changer in the car and also sometimes use the ipod in the car I now find it is weeks before I replace the current half dozen. I do recall at the last swap over I decided to just fill it with free compilations from recent and older Classic Rock magazine Cd's. My big ipod is mainly full of 'best of/greatest hits/the essential' type compilations of various artists too. Must have around 70GB's worth of those by now!
17. Far far too long. Only jammed with mates for years in someone's front room, we were never going to take it on the road and I never thought I was anywhere near the standard required to play in public. Should have been down jam sessions and putting myself about a good ten years before I eventually took the plunge. Biggest regret musicwise and ready to admit it. having said that I'm barely passable standard now...maybe when I hit 50 I'll get round to finally having a lesson!
18.
I've been playing the Jazz so much! It's wonderful! Played for 4 hours last night setting up POD patches for it. Been an eye opener in terms of eq It's also inspired me to practice as I've achieved quite a lot in terms of my technique and fluidity over the last week, I realised what I might be capable of if I really do some work.
Good stuff, my S1 jazz became my 'go to' bass for years. It has only taken a back seat recently as a lot of the acts covered in the band I recently joined are very 'trad P' sound so I'v been using a P bass for those gigs. Still take the jazz to jams ans stuff though, lovely player.
19. I promised myself I wouldn't contribute to this thread 'cos most of you know I don't like the look of Warwicks. But then I saw the pic of the selection of Thumbs and the single cuts in particular and I couldn't stop myself. Yes yes it's all in the eye of the beholder but holy mother of christ they are the victorian freak show of the bass world aren't they? I'm sorry if I've offended anyone but I just had to get it off my chest. Again. As you were...
20.
You think you've got problems, try being left handed.
Quite a few of us on here are, but we've had the good sense to learn to play right handed
21. Has the Warwick gone for good Nige?
22. It's surprising how wide range a good quality 15" can be. I usually run my 1X15 trace combo with an SWR 2X10 but from running each separately from the combo's amp (the combo's speaker is unpluggable) it is clear that it isn't the 10's that are providing substantial top end, more of a mid range 'thump'. The 15 seems quite capable of transmitting quite high frequencies, unless there is a hidden tweeter in there somewhere that I don't know about.
23.
I wouldn't say there was a big difference when all in the mix, especially since so much EQing goes on live so that everything sounds good together
Precisely, which explains my previous comment about not really hearing much difference in 20 years of playing. That's real world playing, not playing the bass in isolation and trying to convince myself that every tiny subtle difference is significant. There are bound to be some differences between strings clearly. But when I know I can get a far more 'different' sound from the same set of strings by, for instance, playing with fingers or a pick or relatively minor alterations in amp EQ than using the same playing method and amp EQ and just changing string manufacturer then logic suggests that the contribution that the strings are making is well down my list of priorities. If I liked someone's sound the first question in my head wouldn't be 'I wonder which string manufacturer he's using?' but maybe I'm missing out...
24. I doubt I could tell the difference from any of them listening to a live gig in all honesty. I can understand the 'feel' side of things entirely though, it wouldn't matter how expensive a set was, if it felt uncomfortable and likely to put me off my stroke I wouldn't have them on my bass. I'm currently trying out some £6 sets of roundwounds I picked up on ebay a while ago. Had a set on my jazz for a couple of months with no detereoration to my ears yet (I don't have a lab ). In the same period I've just ditched a set of Fender strings on my precision that were three times the price as they've gone a bit dead. I've now put a set of the ultra cheapo ones on the P as well to see how they fare with some propper gigging.
25.
Bass Player mag did it four years ago. Lots of differences. But feel and durability are immensely important too. You'll not find me playing Rotosound or Elites for those reasons.
Can you recall how they measured the differences in actual sound? were they in a group context or in isolation?
