In order to buy the right pickup (there are so many possibilities!) it would help to know what you don't like about your current sound and how it differs from the sound in your head that you want. To answer your questions - yes I have changed the pickup in a Squier P - I put in a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound and it certainly beefed up the sound, more output, more everything really (bigger pole pieces, more winds). I'm not suggesting that it is the best P pickup out there as I haven't tried enough to make such a judgement, but it's a decent improvement for the price. It's not tough to do. Assuming you're keeping the rest of the electrics it's a case of remove strings, remove pickguard, de-solder 2 wires, remove old pickup, fit new pickup, solder 2 wires, replace pickguard, restring, DONE. Oh yeah, keep the original pickup. If you sell on this bass, you may not get any more money for it just because it has brand X fancy pants pickup in it. Put the original pickup back in, sell it as stock, and you'll get some money back on selling the replacement pickup separately (or put it in your next bass if it fits )

I feel I need to jump on this bandwagon also because I've realised that in just over 2 years of (serious) playing I've had nearly 20 basses in and out the doors. To be fair I've broken even on average on the ones I've sold on, and you could say that I've just been finding out what I like and don't like but it's probably time to calm down now that I'm clear on what I like (Gibson basses, wide necks, lots of tonal options, quirky (but not pointy) looks) I will make a proviso that if interesting (to me) Gibson basses turn up at silly prices I'll be having them

I've only had 1 bad gig out of 11 so far. Sure, I'll make a few little mistakes most gigs but this one was poor. Afterwards, I was all for tendering my resignation from the band because I felt so bad. The guitarist said to me that he was glad I'd had an off night as it proved I wasn't a robot. Then we all had a good drink and a laugh. Go figure. My wife showed me how to deal with mistakes. She took a tea towel in her hand and said "See this? This is your mistake." She then scrunched it up in a ball and threw it over her shoulder.

My first bass was an Epi EB-3. It certainly was pretty, but I eventually found out that it wasn't my kind of bass because of the thin neck and the bad balance. I sold it without any regrets.

My wife lets my buy any basses I like - except pointy ones. I call them "divorce basses" That is a bargain though, someone should snap that up.

Having owned a Takamine G-series and an Ibanez AEB, I believe that NO acoustic bass guitar will compete unamplified with even a single acoustic guitar. There just isn't enough space in the body to resonate enough air to produce enough sound at bass frequencies. [b]In my humble opinion[/b] the only reason to have an acoustic bass guitar is to blend in aesthetically with an acoustic ensemble, but you'll still need amplification.

Filing/sanding will make an awful mess of your guitar and dust/filings could get into the slot and sit on top of the piezo - you don't want that.

Thx.[/quote] IIRC on the Takamine the bottom of the saddle has notches in it which might have something to do with making individual contact with the piezo for each string. I seem to remember deciding not to mess with that and filed the top of the saddle instead. Take your time. If you do attack the bottom, make it squared off otherwise you'll get poor physical contact with the piezo, resulting in uneven output. I had to fix an electro acoustic guitar recently - no signal from the low E string. This was due to the guy having a go at lowering his action but filing the bottom of the saddle squint. So basically, either shape the top to your liking or make sure the base of the saddle is flat, straight and true if you file the underside.
