1. You can easily setup your own bass. Have a look on youtube as there are many videos on how to go about it and what tools you will need.
2.
So guys, can anyone tell me - is fret buzz and rattle acceptable unplugged? (its driving me mad!)
No, fret buzz is not acceptable. I would take it back and explain the problem. You have paid money ( I expect) and you are not happy with it. Raising the saddles will just make it more difficult to play. You said the neck is dead straight and fret buzz is at frets 1-8. You need to loosen the neck a little. If you look at the trus rod end the rule is generally lefty loosy, righty tighty. If you turn the trus rod probably only a quarter turn to the left then that will probably do it. I would take it back and explain, though, as KiOgon said.
3. Some years ago there was a thread on this very subject. Post after post after post.........after post.......after post said "change the battery".
4. Looking quite special already. Glad to see you using a spokeshave for the carving. I was watching a series of videos on youtube recently where the guy was using a rasp file for carving body and neck. It all seemed like really hard work. He produced good results though. Would imagine a spokeshave will be somewhat easier.
5. Is there an allen screw that needs tightening?
6. ...or you could get hold of something like the EWS BMC sweepable mid conteol pedal. Quite expensive but gives you all the control over mids you want. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/EWS_PEDALS.html
7. I always like to have a cover. Roqsolid can make a cover tomyour measurements if yours is not listed. https://www.amplifiercoversonline.com/dimensions/diagrams.htm
8. If your hands have become used to 19mm they will become used to 17mm. Rome wasn't built in a day, can't run before you walk and any other cliches you can think of. Mind you you sound as if you are doing OK so far. In time you won't notice the difference.
9. Love watching a luthier carving out a neck heel with a chisel like that. Such skill.
10. The only problem with scientific studies is their objectivity. Wood is a natural substance and as such you cannot apply scientific formulas to it. People try, as in many studies, but they never take into account the subjectivity of the human ear/experience. The FACT is that many people who actually build and play the instruments hear a big difference. Science never explains that. This subject was closed for me when I watched the video below. Roger Sadowsky and Michael Tobias are world renowned builders who have built many thousands of instruments between them. No science can ever say they are wrong. Scroll to 41.00 minutes for the discussion on wood. The whole video is very interesting too. http://youtu.be/QzDxC98VNx8
11. Ye cannae get a better bit of bass in yer hands than an ACG.

13. Very, very beautiful.
14. Looked again and would have to agree with HazBeen.
15. At a guess I'd say it is a Vester. Google images show the same V on other headstocks of Vester basses.
16.
Twincam The Status Hot Wire nylons play and feel great on my PB-50. A good price and fast delivery can be had direct from Status. Might be what your after.
Great strings but beware they have a VERY bright tone to begin with, much more so than La Bellas or Rotosounds. Much smaller gauges too.
17.
turns out the 1.27mm allen key which came with my jazz bass is too big and that's the smallest one i've got...! thanks!
Just tried a 1.5mm in my 201 and that fits fine. Strange a 1.27 won't fit.
18. I would agree with over ear, you'll get a much wider tone frequency going through them. I've always used Sennheiser. The set I have just now handle low end really well and crystal clear top end too. Cost about £80. These look like mine. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Ergonomic-Closed-Back-Headphones-Incredible-Black/dp/B005N8W214/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1423737330&sr=1-9&keywords=Sennheiser
19. Well, a series 5000 went on ebay for £505 lately. That was in very good condition. As this has butchered electronics maybe start with a cheeky offer of £250 with that in mind. Not sure I would pay more than £300-350. However, it is up to you and the seller. I can't make a firm judgement from a few pictures. Caveat emptor.
20. Looks to me like a Series 4000. It has the composite body. The controls have been altered as the big white switch is not standard Status. Nor was the little switch on these basses.
21. Great work! The real test for me came with the guitar solo. Passed with flying colours.
22. I've been looking into this for a while. There is the Providence Dual Bass Station but can't seem to find that available in UK. One other option is two MXR M81 bass preamps. buying two at once is still slightly cheaper than a Bassbone.
23. Take it to Chris Mcintyre in Edinburgh. Renowned luthier with a high degree of perfection to his work. Might even be able to do the job while you wait. http://www.mcintyreguitars.com
24. Start by using chord tones. That can help you focus on specific notes, 1, 3, 5, 7 or b7. Janek Gwizdala is always a good resource for this kind of thing. http://youtu.be/7d5t8t0Y-zU
25.
I hadn't realised you could actually CHANGE the strings on a bass! I gave it a try. Doesn't it sound different?
Well, there you are. I've done you a service in highlighting that you CAN change strings.
