Well, I took it to the gig last night (with a bass guitar as back up) and played it all night with the piezo stuck in the bridge. Plugged direct into my LMK + Epifani uL110 what a great sound! big tight bottom with no boom and I could hear every note clearly, me being sandwiched between a 335 / Fender Deluxe Reverb and a Gretch drumkit, with miked grand piano to one side and a raunchy girl singer up front. I got loads of positive comments about the sound (and looks) from the punters. Anyway I've agreed to buy it so I can start expermenting with strings / set up etc. Here's a pic

Right, I've found a pickup that sounds good in the house, I'll take it to my gig tonight and give it a try.
I haven't got one, but I'd love one - you're very lucky! To answer your question, there's a whole thread on TalkBass.com dedicated to the Baby Bass and I'm sure there's some discussions of strings there. I think that you're right about the limited sound, but for salsa / afro-cuban music that is 'the' sound so I'd be loathe to mess with the sound too much if I were you. How much is the asking price if you don't mind me asking?
I think it's got Jargar light strings on at the mo" I tried a Honey D which was toneless, and then a Spiro Weich which sings nicely but still doesn't sound as I'd like it to. Last night I experimented with a couple of transducers clipped on to the aluminium bridge blending them with the stock pick up, I think with time and patience I could get a usable sound but it would have to be at least as good as my Yamaha SLB100, which I'd probably have to sell towards funding the Baby Bass. Price wise it belongs to a friend so that's yet to be agreed. There are a few dings on the back of the neck which I'd like to sort out but otherwise the condition is v good for it's age. It comes with a shaped velvet lined case!

Hi guys, I've got a '60's Sunburst Ampeg Baby Bass on loan, with the option to buy. I quite like it to play, but it's sound is very limited. Just wondered if anyone can recommend strings, or has anyone experimented with a replacement maple bridge with wing slot pickup? cheers Keith

Yes please, either a separate section for upright related instruments and equipment for sale or trade on here, or in the for sale, but keep it upright! Ta!
Might be worth a sticky in the DB/EUB section to this effect Bob, as lots of DB stuff is advertised for sale there.
I for one would like to keep the option of posting upright related items for sale on this forum. There are so many bass guitars for sale on here a double bass for sale post can soon be lost and may be missed. At least we could have a thread with links to the relevant for sale section.

we're sorry to say tonight (Tuesday) has been canceled at the West Park Hotel due to the bad forecast, and the fact that over twenty of our regulars we've spoken to have already decided to stay indoors. That's my second gig canceled this week already and it's only Tuesday!
Thought I'd post this here and in items wanted. Looking for an Underwood, must be in good working order and condition, thanks.
I've a spare Underwood that's out on loan at the moment. I might be persuaded to part with it when It's returned.

Excessive finger noise on A string with Realist pickup
Mr Bassman replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Been playing my new Eminence EUB today. With the Platinum Pro EQ I can get it sounding amazingly DB-like when amplified. One small problem though - the D and G strings sound superb and the E nearly as clear (its fractionally muddier), but the A seems to be picking up excessive amounts of finger noise, resulting in a popping type noise that becomes intrusive if you have to play faster pizzicato bits on the A. Is this the string (Innovation Honey), the interaction with the string/bridge/pickup (David Gage Realist), or perhaps the action (whch I have set quite low; albeit I tried raising it and there wasn't any real difference)? Any thoughts gratefully received. Cheers Clarky
Have you tried replacing the supplied A string? -
No problem. I wonder if Mr.Bassman might take an offer on his price...?
£3,499.50
Ian Morton from SMART hand delivered my new Eminence RN4 today (which was above and beyond the call of duty on a Saturday; great service!) First impressions are that its beautifully made, feels very double bass-like and is very simple to assemble/disassemble for travelling (though I will only take the neck off if we do gigs involving trains or flights). Comes with a good gigbag and a rocksolid, hard plastic golf bag container for flying. The Helicore strings were a bit taut for my liking (as other BCers have told me) and I have swapped them over for Innovation Honeys which are lower tension and have made it a dream to play. Not been able to play it amplified yet as I only got the strings sorted about 10.20pm this evening, that awaits me tomorrow. This is a lovely instrument with as much DB vibe as its possible to get for an EUB, very well-designed and very user-friendly.
How will you sleep tonight? Enjoy!
There's a few threads on TB about these as well as a bit on the great one Bob's website.
Yes, I've been reading them. I'm tempted, but at that price I'd rather try before I buy!
It looks like a great design. One day when I have an expensive bass it won't seem like such an expensive pickup.
I could sell you an expensive bass if you need one!

I'd like to hear from anyone who's got one of these. Looks like a handy bit of kit
Well I collected it this evening and have to say that this was one of those transactions that was a pleasure from start to finish. Adi's a great guy and a pleasure to deal with, the bass is stunning to play and hear, and it fits in my car without trouble. Adi, many thanks mate, look forward to seeing you at our next gig, and let me know when you're gigging also Chris
I had one of these a few years ago Chris, it might suit the Underwood if you haven't got round to posting it back yet.

Who says you can't play funk on a Fender P...

And don't forget Alan Gorrie and A.W.B. who were a huge influence on me back in the day. I saw A.W.B at Leeds Uni in the seventies but didn't get to meet any of them until two years ago when I had the pleasure of Hamish Stuart staying with us whilst up in Yorkshire for a gig I was promoting. Nice chap! -

and another clip of Pops I was, and still am a Crusaders fan and still get to play 2 or 3 Crusaders tunes about twice a month with Jon Taylor's Blues Dudes. My 62 P bass is the preferred instrument for this band, I've taken the soul band flats off and gone back to round wounds. -

Does adjustable bridge change sound of wing slot p/u?
Mr Bassman replied to fatback's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I've got a Bassmax which I've used on my 100 year old French bass with adjusters and my Kolstein Travel Bass with adjusters and it sounds great on both, no pre amp required, just the sound of the bass. Have a look at this Keith
