covers vs originals and the value of what you do
lukeward2004 replied to john_the_bass's topic in General Discussion
I play for both an originals band and a covers band, and my experience with people who have a complex about covers bands is often that they are either: 1 - Young and inexperienced 2 - Naive (which sort of goes hand in hand with the 1st point) I spent 5 years of my life grafting and gigging in an originals band to try and make it big, to try and be a rock star. We came close but ultimately the people in the band started to loose focus and commitment and it went down to swanny. I got sick of playing for nothing, for putting in endless time at home and in the studio writing and recording songs, and then having to manage people to get them to learn the parts and often they could not get over their own ego's to see the bigger picture. So I decided to take a back seat and play for other projects without directly getting involved in writing, unless it was absolutely required. I play for an original pop-rock artist named Natalie long and I have so much fun being told where the gig is, how much im getting paid, and of course, turning up and playing. Equally, I play for a covers band, doing funky covers, and I havent enjoyed myself in a band as much as I am now. Its great as we all learn our parts at home, the musicians are top class, and when we hit to road, we will be earning some money for our efforts, unlike the originals scene. It has made me a better player, and I think that every musician needs to be able to do both - write music and cover music - to understand what is required of you as a musician. -
Ive played throuhg some of the modern Carlsbro bass amps, such as the bass bomber and bass beaver, and thought they where sh*te - so I dont hold much hope for something 20 years older! I can vouch for the pair of Carlsbro PA active monitors we use with the band's PA rig though - clear as a bell and does the job I need them to do.

Hi All, I have a Boss DR 550 Dr Rhythm Drum machine that I no longer use due to programming drums into Cubase and not using it, so ive decided to sell it. I have all original manuals and box, looking for £20 delivered. I will get some pics arranged and uploaded just as soon as I can find some batteries for my camera! Cheers Luke

Lovely bass there Peter - looks like a real stunner! I must say, Yamaha basses are fantastic - really underrated in my opinion, i used to own a pair of 5 string BBG5A's that just sang out and where fantastic basses for the money I paid for them. I was close to buying a BB similar to yours not long ago, but to be honest it wouldnt get the playtime it deserves, so I turned it down - its posts like these that make me wish i had parted with my cash for one!

Male, 22, playing for 6 years this year. Main bass is a 5 string Warwick, backed up by a Fretless Ibanez Gary Willis 5 string. Also have two 4 string basses, a custom handmade Precision that I cant bring myself to sell on and a sexy 4 string Jazz Bass that I keep for slapping. Love most music, really into Funk, Reggae and Rock, with a touch of Jazz and Motown. Would say im a groove based player more than anything, I tend not to over complicate things and aim to keep the bassline well balanced yet interesting, whilst serving the song in the best possible way. I Still think im rubbish though, but I play everyday for at least an hour so im getting there...

Arent those Torque combo's designed for use with keyboards? Im sure my local music store had some and they where down as keyboard amps!

Hey Everyone, Just wanted to stop by and say thanks to everyone who made the day as enjoyable as it was - and sorry I was late and missed many of you! It was nice to see some old friends from past bashes and great to finally meet SiBob and Silverfoxnik - and many others whom your real names escape me! It was a shame as myself and Ped went to get a bite to eat and all of a sudden everyone had left, but it was actually really good fun to sit and have a chat/jam with Nick (silverfoxnik) and Trevor (the legend - the one and only G-77). HIghlights for me where probably the Lakland DJ that Nick had just aquired, the Carvin bass Ped brought along, and Kiwi's Smith 6 - had it not been a 6 stringer I would have snapped that one up. I was also pretty stoked that everyone who played my Ibanez Gary Willis walked away with a big smile on thier faces, and the offers of swaps/trades where promptly refused - sorry guys but that one is a stayer! Also enjoyed hearing Nick play my Warwick - Ive always loved the sound of it when im playing it but watching & listenig to nick made me realise how flippin' good it sounds from a lister's perspective. Cheers guys, lets do another one! Luke

Ive just thought of another one I can suggest - Patrice Rushen's "Forget me Nots". Some excellent ideas there guys, I like the idea of Slave's "Slide" and the Bill Withers track......

Nice Idea Syed, ill look them up. Kiwi, covered "hey ya" before, at a few gigs, but not sure about it - will keep it in mind though....
Never had any kind of reaction after a gig. Unless you count the promoter's mum giving me a peck on the cheek for no apparent reason. EDIT: I'm pretty much the only musician I've heard of who turns up to gigs with two women and leaves with none.
Actually, this happens to me too!!! I got some attention whilst I was with my cheating little @;Xx! of an ex, but since ive been single ive not had any attention whatsoever. I began to think that bass playing was unattractive to women, it always seems to be the arrogant singer or the ignorant guitarist who seem to get the attention!

Hi Guys, In the last few months, ive been slogging away in the studio with my new funk band, Project13, working on getting a covers set down with a view to playing corporate events, weddings and that sort of thing. We have managed to get the first hour of the show down, however I have asked each member of the band to think of 2 tracks, one modern and one old, that we could use for the second set. Problem is, my mind has drawn a blank! Ideally im looking at tracks that are by bands with a similar lineup to ourselves - Drums, Bass, Male lead Vocals, Keys, Lead Guitar and Rhythm Guitar. So far our set is as follows: Stevie Wonder - Supersticious, Higher Ground, Master Blaster Tower of Power - Diggin' on James Brown, Soul with a Capital S Jamiroquai - High Times, Too Young to Die, Runaway Jill Scott - Golden Modjo - Lady George Benson - Turn your Love Around Brand New Heavies - Never Stop + others, im sure ive forgotten one or two! Can anyone suggest any tunes in the funk/soul vein that we could use? So far, our singer wants to do "Heard it through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye, and Macy Gray's "Sexual Healing" - but we are running out of ideas! Help!

Hi Mate, I have used a Hartke 3500 for the last 3 years paired with a Hartke 410XL cab, and it has given me superb results so far - mine has the 12ax7m preamp valve installed and it gives me a nice warm sound, with the treble rolled back to about 3 and the low end up on about 6 or 7. Ive always had good comments on my sound when playing live with the rig, our very own Syed (The Funk) has first hand experience having heard it recently at the Clapham Grand in london. I have run several basses through this rig, a Warwick Streamer LX5, Streamer Stage One, Streamer Standard, Yamaha BBG5a, Ibanez Gary Willis Fretless, Fender Jazz bass and my Customer P Bass - all of which have given me a fantastic sound with a little bit of tweaking. £300 is way too much for the 3000 head, as it goes i would be willing to let my 3500 go for £200 + shipping costs, as I am finding the Bass POD XT has every sound I could possibly ever want to use. Im going to run that into an Aphex Aural exciter and then into a power amp, and hopefully use a tech nd410 cab for my next rig. Drop me a PM if you are interested mate.

Just thought I'd stick me nose in and say that is dead sexy - ive always pondered what the DJ was like tone wise, and seeing as me and Mr Ped are going to take a little road trip to the bash on saturday, id love to have a go if you dont mind? Ill bring my Warwick Streamer LX5, Fretless 5 string Gary Willis bass, and possibly my Jazz - and maybe my bass Pod xt....

Those are some lovely basses there my friend, especially the white jazz - I can vouch for the JV series Squire basses, they are highly sought after and often had better build quality than the USA models at the time.
Hey Buddy! Well, I gotta say you and Ped *forced me* to buy the POD XT rack.. and I gotta say I could possibly be a changed man! I have even taken my TC effects unit out temporarily to see if i'll actually need it or not! Good luck with the sales, you've got some great pedals there, so I shouldnt think they'll be hanging around too long? I got my Pod from the guys down at the Bass Centre.. top notch! Oh, when you get the foot controller, let me know how you get on, as I'm using my standard MIDI controller (Roland FC200) - and that seems to be ok for the job!
Cheers Dood - I just feel that the Bass POD has all the sounds I will ever be likely to use, at the moment I find myself playing at practise with my kidneybean POD XT straight into the PA and it gives me some great results! Im planning on running the Bass POD into a suitable poweramp, with the Aphex Aural exciter sat in between the two to put some harmonics back into the sound. Ill most likely get my mits on a Tech soundsystems ND410 cab and run it all into that so the Bass POD's cab emulation can come through as clear as is possible, but first things first, I need to sell all my current pedals and rig!
