1. Hi there! I'm looking to change my mittels for weichs, so I'm interested! Roughly how old are these strings?
2. Good shout. I'm not sure if they're Hansen or not? They are the stock pups for a Skyline 55 60 deluxe...
3. Hi there! My bridge pickup on my Lakland 55-60 has died. I'm looking at getting it rewound etc, but I did also wonder if it might turn tragedy into joy and try a cheeky new set of pickups... It's a 5 string Jazz style bass, currently installed with an East J-Retro. Sound wise, versatility is the name of the game; I love a vintage tone, but I'm often required to modern, pop and RnB style stuff. I use lots of effects too. So, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of pickups to have a squizz at? Don't worry too much about budget... Cheers then!
4. I'd love to contribute to this glorious celebration of geekery. It's a beautiful thing... Made in Taiwan, serial no. EH13419, February 1995. It currently resides in Bristol. My OCT1 knob is missing though...don't suppose anyone's got a spare one?!
5. If you don't play hard with your fingers, play hard with a pick! I'd recommend using downstrokes as much as you can and really digging in: the sound Trevor Bolder is getting is mainly about hitting the bass hard, getting those strings moving and hitting the fretboard to generate the attack and growl. A P bass could replicate that sound pretty easily if you get lots of energy into the strings to make them move. Effects wise, perhaps a bit of something to give that tube-y overdrive; I sometimes use my T-Rex Bassjuice distortion to blend in a bit of warm fuzz to try and replicate a massive tube amplifier being driven hard. Only a tiny bit, just enough to thicken up the sound. Any overdrive type pedal with a blend knob in would do it. Or perhaps a Sansamp type DI/preamp. It's quite a middle-y EQ as well. Lots of bassists avoid the middle part of their EQ, but for this kind of thing boosting the mids a touch helps cut through the mix a bit and get that snarl. Some great tunes in that set! Bowie totally gets bass players and bass lines - so many of his tunes have iconic bass parts!
6.
I think a lot of people didn't take DJ Trump seriously and are now extremely disappointed!
Very true. I took him seriously though...the Americans have plenty of previous when it comes to electing loonies...
Personally I tried the Chinese Squier VM 70s P against the F branded Mex options they had in the shop and the Squier won hands down. However when we have our free trade deal with the US we will all be able to buy US made custom shop instruments on a trip over the pond and save ourselves a few quid because we won't have to pay import duty. In fact the Donald loves us so much he might even make them free to us Brits with an executive order requiring retailers to waive any right to ownership when serving us.
I'd vote for that. But don't get Donald started on China...
7.
I guess without a smiley wink or something, people will take what you say seriously
Taking nothing seriously at all works best for me: less disappointment. ;-)
8.
Rediculous You think Fender are a pillar of virtue ? How many small businesses have they bought out and shut down ?
Sorry fella: I'm not sure if there's an 'irony' emoji, but if there is I would have used it in the OP. It was merely a facetious quip to provoke debate. I've been a fan of Mexican Fenders for a while - my first 'serious' bass was a Mex Jazz and I loved it to bits - and have always been intrigued by the slightly sinister snobbishness people have about them; it's similar to the prejudice against Japanese made instruments we all had back in the 70s and 80s. Obvs, the Mexican instruments are made more economically with the budget market in mind, but they're still good. Perhaps DJ Trump could look at Mexican production methods to kickstart his own manufacturing economy. <irony emoticon>
9. I don't know about you, but in light of recent shenanigans over the pond I have made a pact with myself to buy only Mexican made Fenders in future. Take that, Donald. Arriba!
10. Is the guy on bass playing the fiesta red P the Metropole regular player? He's doing the business!
11. I'd be up for a Bristol Bash for sure!
12. Lovely bass... Where are you based?
13. I'm interested in these basses too. Tim Lefebvre raves about his, would love to be able to have a play with one...
14. What is Pino's bass? I've never seen a Fender like that before. I think he does a great job - stays faithful to the Ox vibe but does his own thing. You can't replace a player like Entwhistle. Pino's playing on Townshend's solo stuff is phenomenal...
15. I agree! There are too many alarm bells ringing...
16. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=201353152935 Interesting...the seller seems pretty transparent and mentions the body looks suspect - that sunburst looks very odd to me - but it could be an interesting project for someone. Essentially, are you buying a vintage neck with an unidentified body?!
17. That looks fantastic! Are you considering trades?!
18.
I've added Snarky Puppy - Quarter Master
Great shout! What a tune and what a brilliant player Michael League is! His playing on Bill Laurance's album Flint is superb...a complete bass player's performance - 5 string hi-fi sounds, Fender P flatwound vibes, Hofner bass, upright bass, Moog bass...stunning!
Cool . Just followed so will check out soon. There are 2 other Basschat Spotify playlists to check out. Plenty to keep you busy. Basschat http://open.spotify....8vA0sQN2qkts11g Mr Pino Pallodino http://open.spotify....3HUz9u2joumbZ2Z
Hooray! Thanks for that; I started the Mr Pino Palladino playlist a while back. The idea was to create a playlist of as many of his performances as possible, but the guy's played on so much stuff I ran out of steam. It's an open playlist...feel free to add as many tunes you know he's on as you can!
19. What's the tension like on these? Are they more weich or mittel?
20.
...I've read of a few BCers who've swapped out the Duncan Designed pups for Toneriders when looking for a more vintage sound. They're also roughly a third the price of the Bare Knuckle option but I've no idea how they compare. http://www.tonerider...ages/product/21
I've also heard some good things about Toneriders. I'm just wondering if they're much different to the Duncan Designed though...I'm quite liking the idea of putting something a bit special and different into a Squire Jag...
One Man's vintage tone is another's dull thud, but for me Fender Original '62 reissue pup nails the tone I have in my head. Next best was a Wizard Trad, then a Seymour Duncan SPB-1.
Exactly! How are we supposed to know what we want unless we can get a guy around with a load of pups willing to change them over while we try each one on our own bass?! I guess one just has to read up, discuss like we are here and then take the plunge. I've thought about the Fender Original '62. It kind of makes sense...but again, I think I want something a bit different but vintage in character. Aguilar AG-4P-60 anyone?
