1.
WHAT?!?!!? https://www.gak.co.u...ass-head/905997 https://www.musik-pr...ilar-ag700.html Wayyyy more than I expected.
Holy crap! Well that's priced itself out of the water! I haven't heard anyone raving about that new head either, for that kind of money you could buy two Peavey Mini Mega heads keeping one as a back up! Madness I tell you - Madness! Eude
2. Hey funkle, you've entered very subjective waters here. I reckon your best bet will be to find a shop with a decent range of basses to try out if you're not willing/able to go custom. There's Red Dog and Guitar Guitar in Edinburgh, but I hear Guitar Guitar in Glasgow are opening a proper bass department soon, so they might be well worth a visit. On a personal note, I REALLY don't think you need to have a 35" scale to achieve a good low B, you just need a well designed and built instrument, but your mileage may vary... Good luck dude! Eude
3. Ah right, so you're thinking of clamping at the nut then just tidying the strings away in that fashion? That would be fine and create a nice linear and predictable strain across the neck Eude
4.
Personally I'm leaning towards this approach with a clamp at the nut. However if there's a way to lay one of these into the headstock with easy access and strength I'd also consider that. When it comes to the push I'll trust Andy's judgement and will probably go with his advice.
I'd be worried about bass strings having to turn such extreme angles, as they're under a lot more tension than a regular guitar. I would also bring up some interesting torsional stress at the headstock compared to the norm. Having said that, it's a very interesting idea. Eude
5.
Westside are well known for controlling prices. And they won't warranty repair non EU (soon to be non U.K.) bought items, they are non even keen on U.K. Items outside of the warranty period. And Mesa won't release schematics to help local techs do non-warranty repairs.
Yup me, I'll never ever buy Mesa gear based on the above. They don't deserve anyone's hard earned money. Eude
6. Wow, you're not making life easy for yourself! Really excited to see this one develop! Cheers, Eude
7. Tombowlus over on Talkbass has been playing with the ELF and 2 2x8 cabs. He seems to think its a very capable little set up >> https://www.talkbass.com/threads/trace-elliot-elf.1264229/page-5#post-19861510 Cheers, Eude
8. Have you seen the way Ritter do it? I actually think it may have been JP Basses who did it like this first, but can't find any examples now... You could also maybe do something clever with ferrules? Although that will tie you to using double ball end strings >> I would look for a clamping solution to give you the best choice of strings. Cheers, Ewan
9. Bass Surgery made at least one 6 string Rickenbaker >> More here - http://www.3dentourage.com/425/6-string-ric.htm I have a feeling they're out of business now though... Eude
10. Thanks dude, had a wee listen, just sounds like a nice crispy jazz bass, no tone loss whatsoever with the shorter scale I think I have one more bass in me, once my next one lands (an ACG Krell SC E Type 6 string, headless, fretless), I think I might have to see if Alan at ACG will make me a Jazz type bass in 31.5" flavour, my preferred scale length these days. Cheers, Ewan
11.
Whilst not related to the TH500 as it wasn't around, The Bass Merchant used to order Aguilar in directly and the pricing was much fairer. Another example of a bizarre business structure of having 'middlepeople' who essentially act as dealers, storing the product....sometimes helping with problems (often, it's just easier to get hold of the company directly, e.g. like Genz Benz).
+1 I bought an Aggie GS112 from Bass Merchant pre UK distributor for about £300 new. I appreciate prices go up, but they're more than twice that now and it's a 15 year old design! I expect getting a UK distributor will have done more harm than good for the brand in the UK. Eude

NBD - ACG

Unadulterated Filth! Splendid addition to the stable mate Eude
13.
Low B is ace - no real difference in tone than my full size Fender - but there is def a drop in string tension across all strings in comparison which is to be expected really with the 2" shaved off. Not an issue at all, just find I need a lighter touch with the Maruszczyk. The Warwick actually feels higher string tension than the Maruszczyk and also has a sweet B, just prefer the thin neck, preamp and defo the looks of the Maruszczyk = custom-for-me-tastic so the W is now surplus to requirements. No recordings yet but I'll keep ya'll posted!
Thanks for the info dude! It's a lovely looking bass! Eude
14.
As a wee man and a 5 string man I've found medium is defo the best overall fit for me - currently have a custom Maruszczyk Elwood Absolution 5A 32" which is now my go to fiver, along with a Warwick Rockbass Corvette Basic 5 which is up for sale in the classifieds if anyone fancies a medium-sized dalliance with a 5th string...
Wow! I love that Maruszczyk 32" 5er! How's the low B on it? I don't suppose you have any recordings? Thanks dude, Eude

NBD ACG Krell

What fantastic taste in basses mate, congratulations! I always loved the way that one turned out too. As far as internal organs go, just choose one that you have two of, so you can at least enjoy your new purchase for a little while Eude
16. Wow! This looks incredible! Top work, as ever mate. Eude
17.
I`ve not gigged the RMs yet so can`t really comment, but I`d suspect that the BF would be better on this.
Thanks dude, I look forward to hearing when you have Eude
18.
Very nice Kevin, at home practice levels the sound is pretty much the same as with the ABM cabs, no real eq spikes to give a different flavour so to speak. Raggy - yes I think I do slightly prefer the Ashdowns, they just seem to have a more forceful sound about them, like they`re pushing the sound at you, which playing punk just fits a little better for me. Still think the BFs are great though, and will always recommend them.
Hey mate, how does the desperation compare between the RMs and the BF?
19. I might add, I've since dialled in the strings on the 6 string, with a custom made Newtone set, a little lighter than I would usually go for with a taperwound B. It's even more playable now, my shorter scale 4 ACG has the same set now too, but the 33" 5er seems to like things a little heavier. Eude
20.
Just listened to these, some really lovely work there man. I love your approach to playing the chordal stuff on the 6 and the tone really sings. And you're right, that B sounds great!
Very kind of you to say dude, thank you! Eude
21. The B's are great on my basses, and the longest scale I have is 33"! I've had a few ACGs come and go as I've balanced GAS issues and figured out what I really want in a bass, and all of them have had amazing B strings, and again all of them previously have been 33" scale. My 6 string is actually 31.5" scale, and the low B is ridiculously good, especially when you factor in the scale! My 5er has 18mm spacing and a 45mm nut, both standard for ACGs, my 6 string is actually 16.5mm spacing, bit of a hangover from playing Warwick basses, but makes for super fast finger style playing. All my basses have the asymmetric neck shape and flat fingerboard too, again standard ACG stuff and I don't see myself ever going back to 'old fashioned' style stuff now. For your consumption, here's a couple of samples featuring the low B on my 5 >> https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/if-you-want-me-to-stay and https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/rfb-series-active-sample and also, here's some sound samples of my 6 string shorty, chordy noodlings and some low B action too >> https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/acg-salace-sc-e-type-samples Hope that helps dude! Eude
22. I'm lucky enough to see them of them on a daily basis Worth every single penny too! Eude
23. Wow, that sounds awesome! Great playing and a great bass, obviously Eude
24.
According to their website, a standard J series Overwater starts at 2 grand, so I'd assume a p bass would be similar. If fancy electronics and quiet pickups are your thing, then you can't beat Overwater, but if you are looking for a very well built p bass, I recommend Jon Shuker, just from my experiences. Being honest though, no matter who you choose from the suggested names, you're guaranteed a very high quality product, and very good service.
I'd second that, I'd still strongly recommend you check out ACG, as they do make a P Type, but if you're wanting a much more trad looking bass, basically a custom P, Jon Shuker is your man, every time. Just dig through this forum to see why. Eude
25. Another vote for ACG from me! I've played nothing but ACG basses for years now, and having owned and played some reasonably high end basses in the past, ACG are up there if not better than all of them Just to reiterate what others have said, Alan is an incredibly talented and accommodating individual and will make you the bass of your dreams. Cheers, Eude
