1. yes. It's painful reading but the thread with Wishface trying and failing to set his bass up had lots of good tips.
2.
Please tell me why folks think they can buy gear, use it for a few months and then make more money than the dealer did...in the present economic climate.....
Because the most important thing for the dealer is the difference between the price they buy it in at and the price they sell it at before the VAT is added. the whole thing about something being 'demo' to lower their price isn't the issue- a shop can lower their prices (and profit margins) anytime they like. Most of the big distributers though (I hear) don't like their stuff advertised for less than the list so put pressure on shops not too. Now someone working in music retail will correct me on the margins- but based on someone who told me a while back, if a bass costs a shop £400 they will sell it for £1000 or so. 20% of that is VAT and then the rest if profit. What it goes for secondhand is immaterial but the idea that buying something and then selling it for less is more than the dealers profit margins is daft. Anyway- the way the price of instruments has gone up you're as cheap to get a custom made in the UK as go through a shop to buy a fender. We should all buy ACGs!
3.
Not a clue. I find line 6 stuff a bit complicated though. I find it odd that this doesn't exist. To me it seems like a great tool. How hard could it be to add a drum machine to a micro head?
depends how good you wanted it to sound and how fleible. Agree on some line6 stuff used to have a pod xt live very complex, just got one of the original bass pods in a trade, need to sell it but mercifully simple
4. Here's a few questions: who here if they won the lottery would not maybe buy one bass? And who here has ever. bought a bass off someone with more income than you, and more basses than you? If people with money want to buy lots of basses, well it makes it cheaper for the rest of us and keeps smaller luthiers in business
5. Can deliver to Edinburgh on Sunday. Price drop to 60
6. Maybe its a signature model and has a silk screen of his scribble on it or something?
7. ahhh i think I found your pup sale post and sent you a PM - I should have realised that they were the same ones as on this!
8. ? in my experience over many years secondhand stuff on here is 25-30% cheaper than a dealer... for secondhand stuff.... at the moment you can pick up a USA fender for about £500 - tell me where there is a dealer selling new ones for 10% more than that!
9. did the Line6 bass pod live XT have a rythem thing built in?
10.
great price too.
please... don't keep telling me!
11. nice. What do you use to cut the frets? that's the one bit I know I would struggle to do with accuracy.
12.
I'm in need of a decent but not too pricey headphone amp. I want it to have Bass in Headphone socket MP3 in Volume & basic EQ Built in drum machine If it can double as a head loud enough for a small-medium venue (into a 4ohm 2x12, even better. Does this even exist?
drum machine would be the thing that you may struggle with... laptop with one into the line (mp3) in could work instead.
13. you like one tone... but want a versatile alternative? something there doesn't make sense
14.
Obviously you are now my favorite BC poster of the week for this comment
have a look at the thread I just posted.... originally I was interested in the ACG harlot... and the multi wood single cut design.... well that bass is stunning stunning stunning looking- and although I am a fan of Alan's work to look at I think it's the best looking bass he's ever made - and I looked through his entire website to back that up! Then that bass came up on ebay... and well- another classic design and in a fight I know which one I would go for.... but as it happened a pottential sale of my JV didn't happen and... well maybe one of them will still be available in a few months?!
15. what a lovely looking fretboard!
16. this is the bass of my dreams. If someone had been interested in my JV squier it would be mine... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221127874771?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619 does someone else want it... lovely looking JD thumb bass? Otherwise... if anyone wants to buy a JV squier off me (£1200 ono) or even a Bass Pod (£80ono) or a Yamaha MIJ BB300 (£120) even my yamaha SG (£450) or line6 guitar (£50) and help a wee chancer pick this fella up....
17. Bump... thinking the price might be a bit high, feel free to make offers
18.
I bought a 62 Jazz in Oly white from Randy Hope-Taylor about12 years ago (I think I paid £3500). It was the first American Fender I had played which offered any improvement over my 1st and 2nd series JVs which I bought new ( and still have). There are so many basses being made currently that are good enough to be "collectable" that the best areas of collectability/investment value are very difficult to predict. Collecting vintage Fenders is a logical step as there are fewer viable and worthwhile alternatives from that period. It still doesn't follow that there is necessarily any money to be made by owning one for any period of time, particularly at the still-optimistic prices that many ealers quote Still, if you can't make your money back, it's no hardship to hold on to it a while longer......
oooh you have photos of those JV's? tell us more! No one wanted mine when I had it up for tentative sale for a few days!
19.
Basschat and many other fors hold the MIJ Fenders in very high regard. All I was saying is that they are good, but worth no more than usual. Hype comes to mind.
I prefer the necks to a lot of MIJ basses to that of MIA - and back when the yen was weaker a japanese bass at half the price of a USA was a good move. The top end japanese stuff is very very good- using US pickups and good woods. Some of the cheaper stuff... is well... cheaper. What they do have is consistency, you hear a lot about quality controls of US and mexican stuff - but less of japanese stuff. Do they compare to the top end US stuff? Nope, I've got a soft spot for the AVRI series, they are very nice. At the moment to buy a japanese bass new isn't that much cheaper than a US bass.... so which would I go for? US has to be!
20.
The strings also felt too tight (does that even make sense??), and i found it quite hard to play. It did look fabulous though.
obviously not an original, but my JV seems to have less tight feeling strings than other '57 P basses I've played too. It gives it a certain tone. But.... how and why is it?
21. I still want an ACG
22.
I meant what bass are you offering. I'd consider anything. However unless you live locally it's not going to be possible and since I don't know whether a particular offer will be a decent isntrument without first seeing/playing it, it's probably not a good idea.
Well I have a 80's Yamaha BB300 and a Line6 Bass Pod available at the mo, not anything I think would interest you? I was making it more as a suggestion for you to help you get the best you can from whatever deal you sort out.
23.
Thanks Dave I'm far too precious with this - I feel like I can't take it out which is wrong on so many levels - needs to go to somebody who will play it... I'm taking it down to the SE Bass Bash next weekend..hoping that somebody takes a shine to it or that those who try it give it favourable reviews which will raise some interest... It's a shame for it to live in a case...
I know what you mean - it's not good to have a bass that you feel too precious about- I feel that way about one of mine, it's not good
24.
for what?
another bass? It might help people if you say if you want trades and you're likely to get a nicer bass in a trade than the cash from a sale if you know what I mean? find the right seller and it will be someone who can make sure it's all set up before they post it. just an idea
