1.
Personally I think people spend too much time thinking about the tonal effects of things like bolt on vs neck through, fretboard material, etc and not enough considering the (probably more important) aesthetic and playability implications. If you have a bass that is comfortable to play, has a good basic sound, and the right kind of design for what you want (pickup position, fret access, right number of controls, etc) then you can easily make minor tweaks to the electronics to fine tune the tone. Worrying about whether or not your double-mocha-skinny-latte-wenge fingerboard might be brighter than a ekky-ekky-ekky-ptang-nuwop-ni fingerboard seems a little silly to me.
+1 Weight and how it sits is way more important to me than looks. I also think it's easy to spend far too much time thinking through woods.... I think the best knowledge will be asking someone who knows or owns a bass made similarly. For example I could give an opinion on an all maple bass with a wenge fingerboard (compared to the standard fender alder/maple/rosewood tonal range) for a all mahogany bass... well I remember someone on here (Mr Letts I'm talking to you) talking about how his favoured bass building wood was mahogany so I would see if he would let you pick his brain. and pickups are probably as/more important.
 2. Fender P bass, Flip top ampeg Fretless jazz, acoustic amp/cab P bass, ampeg SVT, ampeg 8x10
 3. I did think this one was going to be about whisky, but that Diagio
 4.
Luke - The new amp is the latest creation by Jonas Hellborg, and some extensive R&D. Its a 2 channel, Class D output at 1000W - 4 band eq, compressor, tuner out, effects loop, DI out, and more. I haven't played one yet, but will at NAMM in 1.5 weeks. Andy Irvine has been doing extensive testing with it, and he says its incredible...with more depth and low-end thump than normally associated with a Class D amp. Full details to come, once I've spent some time with it! Thanks!
I was expecting just a normal slightly underwealming warwick amp... but that looks really interesting -I'll look out for more information. I currently use a Tecamp puma which also has managed to get more low end than most class D amps. It looks like your new one has a valve preamp in it too. Exciting.
 5.
Yes, we've got quite a few new products for 2013! Rockbass Star Bass, Rockbass W bass, Rockbass Triumph Lite, Rockbass Corvette 32" Medium Scale 5-string, Rockbass Dark Lord, the Warwick Streamer CV, BC 10 combo amp, LW1000 Class D amp head, WC210 cabinet, and WC810 cabinet! (On the Framus side, we've got the Panthera 8-string guitar, 27" scale!) Everything is up on the website, but will be officially debuted at NAMM 2013 soon!
Garey! That new amp head looks interesting - care to tell us more about it? http://www.warwick.de/modules/produkte/produkt.php?submenuID=14673&katID=24035&linkID=48496&&cl=EN
 6.
Which one is that? I'll go have a look.
seem to be called the kings house now. odd name. http://www.kingschurchperth.org - I know the fella who leads it, was at his daughter's wedding last month
 7. he's pretty good isn't he? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imPwCYXJw4g
 8.
Amen. I used to lay down the low end for The Lord, but I'm not able to go to that church anymore & struggling to find a new one. Not so much to play at, but just one that has a good worship & service combined. Got another to try this Sunday. If you need some good worship songs to learn (even just for at home), we can post some on here.
i know a good church in perth, they don't have an amzing amount of musicians at the mo, so much so that I once turned up with a band from Edinburgh to give them a week off.
 9.
I hear more stingray than people might think and like flea he gets a stingray sound out of most basses imo, fingers again
warwick streamer stage one pup placement is pretty much centred on the mm sweetspot...
 10.
True but unlike fender just throwing together bits of existing models to make a reissue often technically wrong even when they had the right bits all along the classic rays have required pats not made or fitted on their bases for years by MM or ever by ebmm.
yes. but they don't seem to make a pink one any more. this is regrettable
 11.
Some harsh comments on the Classic Rays, its not like a Fender rehash really,
well technically isn't it kinda like a rehash of the ones Leo built? Not a bad thing
 12. Stingray - the original, 2/3 band EQ, alinco pickup Sterling - smaller body, ceramic pickup, extra hidden coil Singray 5 - another beast altogether with some changes through the years Bongo - what happens if folk who don't play bass design a bass. classic - musicman realise how much money fender make with reissuing old looking basses oh of course you can have any of these with the classic one humbucker, or with another pickup in there...
 13. no, it's all about making money.
 14. how long before rick turns up....
 15. odd to have 2 passive active switches
 16. that looks awesome. keep this one!
 17. any other product you would stop buying them as they have a clear design fault...
 18. Didn't think i would see you putting this one up!
 19.
Interesting... I would think that the main difference between your present SSI and Bluey is the density of the woods; a sub 8lb bass IMHO will sound different to a 9-10lb instrument. On basses of similar weights there is little discernible differences (that I can hear) other than between Streamers that have differing pup configs or body/neck woods. In a blind test I've not been able to tell the difference between MEC / EMG equipped Streamers from different years (assuming they don't differ significantly in woods/construction/weight); though the difference between say a SSI with the early predominantly wenge neck and the later maple neck is very noticeable (obviously the Ltd Ed/SSI/SSII basses do sound vastly different). In conclusion; wood density/weight. My red SSI is over 9lb but it sounds significantly tighter/fuller/more piano like, than any other 'light-weight' SSI that I have had. However, I am prepared to sacrifice a bit of tone to save weight.
interesting, from memory bluey sounded more compressed and processed, natural opened the sound up, deeper bottom end, more natural sounding, and brighter too. When I stuck the barts in it the slightly softer attack made it very pianolike, but maybe emphesised differently to bluey. Natural is a lot lot more resonant acoustically too. Interesting to see such differences between two basses made 3 months apart from each other. Mind you the ACG preamp it now sports has changed the way it sounds a fair bit too!
 20.
...Bluey eventually repays me! Patently I'd offer folding stuff or a Roadworn Jazz!
out of interest what is the difference between a good sounding streamer and a not so good? I was shocked how different bluey and my current one sound.
 21.
No, I said my 'ideal' weight for a bass would be about 8lb. The particular bass I'm referring to is 9lb 6oz and I said that it was a lb or two heavier than I'd like. I actually have a Streamer that is 7lb 14oz but it isn't the same maple/maple construction and thus it is less focused. However, I did have a Ltd Ed Streamer which I sold recently and that was over 10lb... hence my selling it.
there is part of me that would love to sell you my superlight one, some kind of bass karma.
 22. there's been a few around recently for 500-550 price range.
 23.
Miss my lake placid blue one (which Luke bought) terribly; was sifting through pics of my little girl on the laptop the other day and it was in the background of a few shots. These really are special basses. The red is gorgeous too.
It was awesome. I do wonder why I sold it sometimes - it went to a man in barcelona and makes him happy as his dream bass so if that makes you feel any better... mind you, put it this way, if I had £1100 spare....
 24.
Why buy it then if you know you're not going to keep it? I go to my local music shop "to try" stuff out.
Mainly as I have more than one bass. I used to have two keepers and one that I would buy/sell to try things, if I found something that fitted then I would keep it and maybe sell one of the other ones. To try it out there was a valenti jazz on here (which music shop will you find that in?) which was cheap enough to try - if it had worked out I would have kept it. But it didn't so I sold it to a very happy funkyspuke for the same price and it's still his main bass. It worked out for him and not for me. Likewise I bought another FSR Fender Jazz bass, the most expensive thing I've bought - knowing that if situations changed I would have had a great bass for a while and not lost a silly amount of money. Things changed and I ended up selling it (for the same amount I bought it for) to a guy in Barcelona - again a bass he had been after for years and is his main bass. Both basses there you wouldn't find in shops, (you're near bass direct, I'm not!) neither would you a Peavey T40, a Cimar 1909, and much of the old japanese stuff that's quite fun.
 25. I signed up to sell a pedal I had and never used. Thought I should stick around. I think the main thing that's affected me is that I've opened my ears to a load of different stuff. Like listening to funk, and jazz stuff and learning who Jaco is and so on. It's been good - I guess that has all effected my playing a massive amount but it's mainly through exposure to music rather than concerted learning. I've also become a bit of a bass geek. I own gear that I wouldn't have thought possible, at affordable prices due to the marketplace, I've chatted to some cool folk. I've built two bitsas, I'm not even going to count how many basses have gone through my hands, I learnt to build effects pedals, I can set up and sort my friends instruments, and nicely... I've owned pretty much every bass I want to and expelled the GAS!* *almost, it's not GAS, but I wouldn't mind trying a stingray.
