1.
Are you just playing them by running patterns,or do you actually know what you are playing and how the notes work together? Don't look at scales as technique practice. Learn the notes that are involved and play them all over the fingerboard and over every available octave. If you are just running patterns then you will get nothing out of them.
That's great advice. My bass tutor has got me to do this and it really helps! I now think about the notes and where I can go from there. I still use patterns but within the context of knowing the notes I am playing.
2. I have been recording myself for a while now. I thought it was just vanity! Seriously though, I can hear the mistakes and try harder next time
3. Wow, I don't think I will ever post a serious recording on here! I NEVER play bum notes, just LOADS of chromatic passing notes! That will be my coat I'm getting then
4. +1 on all of above. I also split the scales practice time (say fives minutes at at time) with learning or playing a new/well rehearsed bass line. It keeps interest etc. I truly think that if it's not fun, then it will not stay in!
5. I tried one of these. It felt heavy and chunky. IMHO they are not that good (and I DO buy cheap guitars/basses etc)
6. Started playing bass the hard way I've played guitar for a while and the set required some bass.......... I borrowed my daughters Ibanez SRX700 and gave it a go. Complete convert to the low side now
7. I prefer flats but as stated above, the rounds are cheaper.......
8. Superb resource and a very well laid out site. Congratulations!
9. Well after an afternoon of playing and recording (including a jam with the family) I have put the bass down and I am spending the evening watching tv and reading BC comments! Decided to have a Saturday night in
10. Pickups seem the only thing in the budget left to do! (maybe a bit of copper tape in the routing and a new jack socket) then you are done
11. I once started a gig (on guitar) with a capo in the wrong position. I threw me out all evening
12. As the title suggests, my family sat down and jammed. My wife on bongo's, youngest daughter on keyboard, middle daughter on acoustic guitar and me on fretless bass. The result is supprising! Take a listen if you dare............... Now on soundcloud
13. Wow, that is really cool. Bass was well balanced and the twiddly bits were great. The vocals were clear (maybe a little to loud but thats really subjective). Great stuff!
14.
I think its fair to judge a brand on anything/everything that they produce. As long as u look at specs and try to understand their aims you could still check for Qa and general sound character.
+1 I think that was the point I was trying to make. The Crush range is a cheap entry level combo (practice or otherwise) and it's build quality is good. I was an Ashdown fan until I tried the Orange.
15. Whish I had started a band at 17.................... Oh I did, we were called 'The Projectors' Crashed and burned in the first year. I wish her every success and hope she makes it in her genre. I was in Camden yesterday and it was full of Gothic horror people who would like that sort of thing!
16. I have an Orange 50w bass amp. It doesn't sound anything like the Orange big rigs, but at £180 it's loud and has some nice features (like a tuner). It suits my purposes and if I ever get to playing a stadium, I am sure I will get a huge Orange stack and love it as much
17. Is it this one? I have heard they are faking these (in the Milky Way) Best be careful
18. Are to be sure, it's a long way to Ballymena.......
19. Fingerz, will you stop showing me such things until I get a little better
20.
That's interesting, I had thought about that, but have never seen it done, and I was worried whether that would put a strain on the neck joint that it wasn't designed for. Presumably you've not had any indications of any problems like that?
I've had no trouble with it. The bass is as light as anything anyway.
be carefull there. dont do go screwing through into the truss channel. common sense but you never know.
It's just tied on as with my acoustic guitar. All well balanced it just looks odd as nobody seems to do it!
21. Other folk on the site that know a lot about valve amps and electronics will probably clarify, but I'm sure that it is something to do with power tubes needing to have a load of some kind. +1 Always best to have a load on a running amp. May I ask why you would want to run it without anything attached?
22. Fast and furious! I generally liked the mix and felt that you were probably getting the desired effect. Great stuff!
23. All very nice. I only use a Chorus pedal (on my fretless) but each to their own. How does it all sound?
