1.
Seems no one plays 33.33 at 45 any more. Must be getting old.
Ah brings back memories
  2. I have an aux input on my amp. It helps define the bass line.
  3. That just made my day lol I need to move to Dorset
  4.
Anyone that considers £150 too much for custom made plugs which offer the very best protection,is mistaken. Just ask anybody that suffers from tinnitus as a result of overexposure to loud volumes.
While I agree with what you say, I would have to sell both of my basses to make the £150. I bought £20 Elacin ER20 from ebay and I no longer suffer at gigs or after rehearsal. I should really save up and buy moulded ones as I do think they are the answer.
  5. We usually drop the tune if he can't sing it......... Changing key is fine by me but other memebrs of the band like to keep things original
  6.
I didn't get as far as 3:21, I was bored senseless by around 3:10. I think the guy needs to develop another lesson along the lines of "don't meander, get to the point!!". Or in musical terns, "don't bore us, get to the chorus!!" hahaha
Only got to 1:24....... I do like Scott's lessons and have followed a few of them.
  7.
Maybe you could go back and listen to the tunes and to what the original bass player did on the recording. Take that as a starting point for your own lines?
I have spent a pleasant afternoon going over the set list Most of the songs are simple root followers with a few passing notes anyway The ones that have a clear and memorable bass line I have spent some time getting back to the original line. One that is annoying me is Changing Man by Paul Weller as I really can't pin down what is going on. This is one of the songs where I have either stuck to the root or gone off on my own........ Still, I have realised that I need to go with the flow more in my covers band. That should allow me to set up my own band with the drummer to create some original material.
  8.
Trojan Records 10 track sampler free download on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co...rd_i=1000662243 Full tracks, some oddities, not bad.
I just downloaded that, thanks. It's nice to listen to something different now and again. Cheers
  9. Thanks for all of the advice, it has helped find perspective. Going back to the original line will help in the short term. Joining (or starting?) an originals band sounds like the way to go for musical freedom. Cheers to all.
  10. I do think it's the nature of the beast. I have 2 Jazz and one P/J and all the Jazz pups sound the same A wall of P basses seems the way to go for your solution!
  11.
First time I've ever heard "In the pocket" used it an almost negative way.
Yeah, it threw me too!
  12.
Not sure how this all relates back to the new guitarist ... do you feel that his presence is part of the issue?
I should have made that a stronger point. With the last guitarist, I did what I felt was right. The new chap gives me a 'WTF' look if I deviate from either the actual line or a root 5th groove. It has knocked my confidence of playing in the band situation.
  13.
Are you comfortable with the song? Are you comfortable with you place within the band? Are you comfortable that if you cock up when cocking about that it wont matter? Like you, unless the bass line is essential to the song I improvise around the chords just keeping the same feel but play much more than root, 5th.
I don't know most of the 'newer' songs (read post 1979!) so I am not that comfortable with them. As for my place in the band, yes I am happy with that. If I make a mistake, no one seems to notice / care? I just keep going and don't stop playing. I enjoy making my own lines, I just seem to have lost that ability in the band situation.
  14.
Maybe time to go back and learn the original lines to those tunes you have been previously making your own up for? It's always easy to slide back to your comfort zone. Could be there are some bits in those tunes that might give some inspiration?
That sounds like a plan
  15. Just to clarify, I get on with my drummer very well After our rehearsal last night, we had a chat about how the band is going etc. We both agree that the new guitarist is very talented but we are not progressing as well as at the start. He made comments about my playing, like it has become more root based 'in the pocket' stuff. We used to be a lot more 'free form' - both knowing what the other will do and playing to it. It made me realise that I have lost my way a little. Although we are a covers band, I usually made my own bass lines (unless they are central to the tune). I seem to have lost that confidence and it is rather confusing. When practicing on my own, I let the music dictate. Now, when I rehearse with the band, I end up sticking with root / 5th and grooving to the beat. Any ideas or advice on how to break free from this durge? Cheers Brian
  16.
This sort of thing is only 'difficult' for groove -obsessed bassists and fans of the rock band, U2.
Ah, this explains why I had no idea what you were talking about.........
  17. Feels like a trip to Denmark St is long over due for me! Last time was around a year ago and Wunjo was the only shop I enjoyed going in. I have for an acoustic bass and really need to play before buying. (I'm not so fussed with electrics as I am happy to adjust to my style).
  18. After having a cable ruined by someone putting a chair on it and sitting down to play their guitar.......... I agree, it is very frustrating I am thinking of going wireless or getting a double bass lol

Very good. I can only dream of playing like that...................
  20. I always put 'has been gigged' as it makes me sound all cool and professional........
  21. Respect. nuff said. Blademan
  22. I thought you were Martin Landau............. Crushed So, to answer your question, yes!
  23.
Are you in Spinal Tap..?
Yes. And if Nigel thinks he can just walk back on stage and take over............
  24.
Right, I'm going out now to see if I can get drunk enough to think you're brilliant...
You will need to drink a lot in a short space of time, then turn on the spot 20 times. If you are still standing, you won't think I am brilliant. If you fall over, I will seem to you a Bass LEGEND......
  25. My better half does it. There are no arguments. Just not worth it.
