1.
Godbluff by Van Der Graaf Generator is probably a bit better for them having had some time off.
I find myself swimming against the tide here, as I rate both Still Life and World Record above Godbluff! And after another 30 years off, Trisector is also a blinder!
2. King Crimson, at least twice! I'm thinking of Discipline and The Power to Believe.
3. And with a thread about Colin Moulding jogging my memory, I'll add XTC's English Settlement to the 'good' category.
4. Ah, how could I forget Todd Rundgren's "Todd", possibly my desert-island album! (Something/Anything's not bad either.) Re. The Wall, I think it succeeds in its own terms... but I don't like it. I loved that the post-Barrett Floyd were always in transition, whereas The Wall sees them firmly established as a vehicle for Roger Waters' preoccupations. :-(
5. Yes: Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Most of Zappa's doubles, including You Are What You Is and Joe's Garage. Prince's Sign 'o' the Times. No: Joni Mitchell's Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (sides 1 and 4 are amazing, sides 2 and 3 skippable). ELP Works, as previously noted - I'd rather have the band side, and then seven or eight minutes each of the solo stuff. Maybe: The Beatles White Album - maybe a great single album plus EP? And an honourable mention for Van der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts, a single album originally planned as a double. The bonus tracks on the last re-release give a flavour of what a great double it would have been!
6. Since I hear it what feels like 15 times a day in the office, I can't help but observe that Adele's Hello slyly mentions California Dreaming...
7.
Sabaton have a song made up almost entirely of songs titles (Metal Machine), another made up of lyrics from other songs (Metal Ripper) and another made up of band names (Metal Crue).
Heaven 17's Who'll Stop the Rain has lyrics made up of film titles...
8. Joni Mitchell - In France They Kiss on Main Street / Bye Bye Love (Everlys)
9. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway / On Broadway - The Drifters (Edit: although that's more of a quotation from the song.)
10. I presume being self-referential is out of bounds.... otherwise, pretty much everything by Frank Zappa!
11. Prefab Sprout - Faron Young It's Four in the Morning by, er, Faron Young
12. "what once was a $3000 piece of wood" Er.... no. It never was.
13.
More worrying when your local takeaway's menu actually advertises "Donor Kebab". Jon.
Ah yes, that's when you want someone to enjoy the gift of your kebab after your death.
14. Doner, donner? Both wrong, it's döner!
15. Eh? So was the original idea to drum up interest so that someone would offer to buy the bass outside of eBay so that he could dodge the fees? #confused
16. This thread prompted me to revisit the Bauhaus version of Ziggy Stardust. Ugh.
17.
That's not exactly the 'vast majority' is it? The skill comes in knowing when it can and when it shouldn't be changed. Arguing that a serie of notes in one run is wrong, one that in all probability the original artist didn't even think about when they played it, is a complete waste of everyone's time. .
Ah, don't assume that the artist knows how it's supposed to go Seriously - the recorded performance may have been improvised, yet gone on to be definitive in the eyes (and ears) of the audience, so that's 'how it goes'.
18. It looks nice, but if I were a guitarist I think I'd keep it as a wall decoration.... if I were to play it in public, it would only serve to remind the audience how much better it would have been to hear Hendrix!
19.
So my playing is mostly while sight-reading. I know, many here would be horrified, but I enjoy it.
Not at all horrified. Unless you're using a music stand...
20.
Guy Pratt plays a 5-String on Pulse. In comfortably numb he has gratutitously overused the bottom string. Don't know what note it is but all the chords and the melody line ascends - giving the song a lift, while the bass note tries to drag the song down. That's not an accidental wrong note, that's a bad choice. IMO.
Maybe... although Mr Gilmour seems like a no-nonsense guy and I don't imagine he'd hesitate in reining Guy in if he thought it necessary. The thought of using a newfangled five-string might not have occurred when recording the original!
21.
Jimi Hendrix used to play it wrong all the time...
He couldn't even hold his guitar the right way around!
22.
No, that was Spandau Ballet and Martin Kemp didn't actually play any bass on that, it was all synth bass.
B-bum tish!
