Anyone got any clips of an ABM with a Super Twin? I’d like to hear that.

It's tiny!! I do like a phaser. It's about the only modulation I really like.

I'd love to try a Wooten sig. Not the YY, the one that looks proper shagged now. I could never afford one but I'd like to have a play and see what the fuss is about.

There are basses with 5 strings, and 5 string basses and they are not the same thing. I like 5 strings. Played them for a long time. I've had cheap ones and expensive ones (£3K+) In all that time I've only had 2 basses without those overtones. Marleaux Consat Custom 34 inch scale Ibanez Mezzo 5 string 32 scale. All the others - The Stingrays (2 of them), the 37inch Dingwalls, the Sandberg TT5, other Ibanez etc have all had them. Some very mild, some very obvious. I can only assume there is something in the construction of those 2 that solves the issue, and that it's a cheap fix as the Mezzo was under 10% of the cost of the Marleaux! They also had very different pickups / bridges / preamps / woods. I've had all manner of strings on those 2. Steels / TI Flats / White Nylon La Bellas (amazing on the Marleaux) and even with the very brightest steels I never had the overtones. So I believe the answer is in your bass, not in the strings.

How does it work? It goes beyond steel rounds = bright; flats = dull. There is a measurable EQ difference in very similar strings made with different materials. TI Flats - quite a lot of mids Dunlop Flats - Far more bass than the Ti Flats, lower mids, quite bright at the top. La Bella Flats - very mellow top end. Round steels - bright zingy Round Nickels - not nearly as zingy. What is the process for designing a string? I'm curious as to actual details, not just "well, steel just is zingier, ain't it!?" - is it something in construction that affects the pickup magnetic field? How does a flatwound cause less treble than a round? Does being a flatwound actually attenuate treble that is still there, or does it not generate that treble in the first place? What are the differences in the EMF that cause the different sound? That sort of thing! ta

I know I already said Sandberg - but they also do an option of a 32.5 medium scale on all their basses. So if you try a regular Sandberg (the next shapes are the same on P and J types) and you like it, you could make the stretches a little easier again by going for the medium scale. The additional cost for the medium scale is the same as the extra for a 35 scale. The medium scale isn't shown on their online configurator but if you add the 35 scale and whatever else you want it will give you a good idea of the money. If you order, just remember to NOT use the code that the configurator generates!

No - it's 41.3mm - same as a modern Precision.

At the height of my addiction I think I had about 25. Cheap stuff, stupid expensive stuff, in between. I've now got my Spectrum, FX25, Hotone mini thingy, and the BSW. The guy from Lovetone is now working with ThorpyFX and I believe there will be an updated Meatball at some point. That is going to cost me money!

Or... just buy a neck https://www.fender.com/en-GB/parts/electric-bass-parts/necks/ Lots of official options as well as the Warmoth if you are not worried about the logo.

I was just about to say that. Should be a Pinned Thread for people wanting that to match up. Plan in advance and even get the fretboard wood you want.

Sandberg VS4. Job done.

Boss EQ-200 is excellent. Very quiet in use. 4 memories. Top mounted jacks so actually doesn't really take any more space up than a smaller pedal with side jacks.
-
I have 3 of them. Superb pedals. As a straight filter the MXR and the more expensive Source Audio Spectrum are probably better, but the Digitech can do many things those other 2 cannot. It will do a very good filter, some fantastic synth tones (Deeper Underground etc), and octave effect if you set the controls right etc. It's one of the most fun pedals I've ever had.

Just remembered. EMG have other pickups in the 35 housing. J and P types, and X series versions of those with more headroom. And then other dual coil options too. I'm a big fan of the X series pickups, particularly the PJ set.
-
Snappy normally means singles - J type. Fortunately almost all pickup makers do options in an EMG shape. (and annoyingly EMG don't do theirs in Barts sizes) The Nordstrand options are wide ranging - true singles and hum cancelling options. Theirs are quite cutting in the presence freqs.

Ibanez Mezzo series. I have 2, a 4 and a 5. The 5 is stock, and the 4 has EMGs and an EMG 2 band EQ. I think I paid £270 ish for the 5, and £199 for the 4, both new. Admittedly the 4 has another £350 worth of upgrades in it now, but only because the basic bass was worth it. I think they are fantastic. 32 inch scale. Lovely neck profiles (particularly the 5) and they sound far better than their price point. The stock EQ is the weak link but the pickups are good enough to bin the preamp and use them passive. Both of mine have Dunlop stainless steel Flatwounds on them and they sound ace.

He swapped to rounds quite quickly. Confirmed by Nile on twitter.

Songs you always wanted to play but never did...

I love to. I've only been in 1 band that had the right people & instruments to do it, but it was 99% originals with 1 or 2 short covers in the set only. Not a 13 minute job. -
they don’t open on Sunday so I suspect Mark is just doing a bit today at home. Its not like they have live stock update systems like larger shops.
-
No. Proper ones.
-
Interesting! Where did you get them from?
-
I love EMG J pickups. Wonderful things.
-
I’ve had a Mk1 and a Mk3 and although the 1 neck is a little smaller it’s still massive compared to my Sandberg! The Mk3 I had was also 12 lb so it had to go. Amazing sound though.
-
The Woofer tone control should also be a push pull pot to cut more treble.
-
Yup. Me too. Sandberg TT4, couple of Ibby Mezzos, Ibby EHB, are all very comfortable. My precision feels very antiquated by comparison. I still love it but I do want a Sandberg version!
