1. Down on the E A D and up on the G. Usually prefer to pull down on G strings but not on bass
2. Band members pick cover songs and if everyone agrees then its down to whether the singer has the vocals to cope with it. In some cases the singer says yes but struggles during the gig for whatever reason and we would drop that particular song. We would tend to pick the standard classic rock tracks as a starting point. Lot can depend on whether or not the musicians in the band can actually play the song Don't specifically play to get people dancing but more generally standing in front of the band just watching and applauding at the end (hopefully) Classic Rock band at the moment. You do get the occasional headbangers tho. LOL On the originals bands i've played with the singer / guitarist was the main ideas writer and the keys and him would put something together and bass and drums would then add their bit altho in some cases the person with the ideas doesn't like what you i do and i need to come up with a back up plan. Dave
3.
The Jefferson Airplane's *"White Rabbit" came into our set list and I thought it was dated and not a very good idea. I couldn't have been more wrong, people love it, we usually close with it with everyone singing a real crowd pleaser. It's why I stay out of the picking material arena. Blue * Another reason why I don't like to see Blues bands painted with a broad 12 bar shuffle label
Just had a listen to White Rabbit and find it hard to see that go down well especially as a closing song. Afraid its not my cup of tea Blue. Dave
4. Great cab. I have the black version and they are deep sounding cabs. Have to say i paid a fair bit more than this so great price for a great cab. GLWTS Dave
5. Bass solos just for the sake of it is a big NO NO. Different if its someone melodic like Steve Lawson, Steve Williams, Zander Zon, Stewart Clayton, Adam Nitti kind of material where the player is playing something meaningful. The OP clip and the EW&F clips are def not for me at all. Dave
6. Any Rock festival will be charging tickets. Usually they have various packages available ie day tickets, weekend tickets and weekend with accomodation packages. They will be making a significant profit otherwise they wouldn't bother running it. They do mention that their sponsor has let them down and that might have been the original organiser and maybe the holiday park themselves are now trying to put something together at last minute to keep the festival alive. No matter what the reason they should still be paying even a minimum agreed amount as its not a charity gig. Pretty sure some up and coming young unknown rock band looking for some recognition with fee accomodation thrown in might think this is a good opportunity to play and use it as a free rehearsal gig. Saves paying £30 for a 3 hr rehearsal i guess. Think it depends on why you play. This is back to the old "playing for fun and not for money" arguement. Dave
7. Did you give him an opportunity to resolve his issues or go straight to the sacking without him knowing. ? If he was a good drummer and an original member i would have said to him that his timing is starting to fail and he either needs to get it together or we would need to look at another drumer that can commit to the band. Think it very unfair to sack someone without offering them a chance to sort it. I would say that if you haven't given him a chance and just gone behind his back then that is sneaky and not acceptable in my opinion. The one thing you can't do is just put up with it and then sack him. Communication is vital in a band. Dave
8. brilliant every time i see it.
9.
Not sure you can get the exact sound of a P bass, but you can get close (imo). Roll off the rear pickup volume all the way, front pickup on full and pluck over the front pickup. Take the tone off about 3/4 of the way. It will still "bark" like a Jazz, but only slightly.
This will be as close as you can get. I have a jazz and a P/J. The jazz pick up just doesn't have the same depth as a precision pick up. I've tried as i love my jazz basses but eventually had to go for the best of both worlds with the P/J to get that low depth of a P bass but still retain the clarity of the J at the back. The new deluxe P/J has a slimmer neck somewhere between a Jazz and a Precision.
10.
Used to do Maid In Heaven in a band I was in a few years back. Always enjoyed playing that one. Sadly I can't harmonise to save my life, otherwise I'd go for this.
Maid In Heaven one of my fav tracks of all time. Fantastic song
11.
Played Ships in the Night on my first ever public gig at the tender age of 17. Happy days
Me too, back in 1977
12. That's one of those door to door delivery companies. Dave
13. Probably the best tribute band i've ever heard and they had so many covers to choose from but i just kinda liked this one a lot. http://youtu.be/kwMAQL9IDus
14.
I think some forget that were all in it for fun. Some of us are in it for fun & money. If your not having fun it's time to move on. Blue
Think you've hit the nail right on the head there Blue. Dave Dave
15.
It's OK man. You're home now.
PMSL brilliant.
16. Couple yrs ago i got sick of all the band hassle and decided to pack it in. Few mths later i got a call from guys that just wanted to get together and play some songs they liked "just for fun." They were all playing in various other bands anyways and not really too bothered about gigging but maybe a special occasion or the odd local festival. Met with them as they sounded like a no hassle easy going bunch of guys. Rehearsed for 6mths and we played guitarists birthday and after that they all decided the band was too good not to gig. All went well for the next few mths while we polished off the set then the guitarist decided it wasn't for him and he wasn't really into it. He was the one that originally contacted me too. My point being that its funny how bands that start off as a bit of fun usually end up wanting to gig. Seen that on quite a few occasions now. Dave
17.
I'm doing really well with my Fender Bassman 500 head. It's putting out 350 Watts @ 8 ohms, going through an 8 ohms Bassman 115 Neo cab. This is a good Fender half stack for my playing.
I've been hearing good things about the amp heads in this range. Haven't heard much about the cabs tho. Would kinda quite like a Fender rig to match my Fender basses but that's just being a bit too "look at me with my full Fender set up" Better not. Dave
18. I went from Fender nickels to D'addario nickel and used them on my working basses. I have Overwater strings on my Overwaters mainly because i won them at a bash bash. I have Elixir strings on my Warwick but find the tension a little too tight compared to D'addarios. Tried the DR Nickels on my goto Jazz bass and love the feel and tension from them but far more expensive and haven't really lasted much longer than the D'addario nickels. I usually change about every 2-3 mths depending on use and how much sweating and i start to hear the tone change and they lose their "zing". I think i'll be going back to the D'addarios again. Dave
19. Long time ago now but here goes :- Location/Venue: Ex-school disco (i had left school but guitarist was still there) Your age: 17 Year: 1977 Your bass: Columbas Jazz Your amp: Sound City head and 2x12 cab The set list (some of it): Ships In The Night by Be-Bop Deluxe, Rocking all over the World by Status Quo, probably a Deep Purple song ? Dave
20. I have the Geddy Crafted in Japan version and the neck is very impressive. It has a thin depth of neck in comparison to any other bass i've had including my 80's Jazz altho memory of that is maybe a bit vague these days. I'd say its closer to my Warwick Thumb 89 with regards the depthe of the neck. Its my goto bass for everything these days. If i find it doesn't suit the music or band i'll look at another bass from there. Quite fancie putting the white tortosie pickguard on mine but not sure where to get one that would fit perfectly without modification. Dave
21. That is absolutely stunning. I'm on bass max at moment otherwise i would seriously be looking at that ACG. Gorgeous basses. GLWTS Dave
22.
Just for you Tom. 23.
I'm now finding it works for camera lenses too.
I thought all you needed was a long and short lense I need to investigate this further Dave
24.
Really kind, hope you're ok Dave. Guess these are like Sandbergs version of Mex Fenders. One of the 5 basses I gig regularly. 2 Mex, 2 Korean, 1 USA. I nearly always use my Mex FSR P/J. A good number of folk have asked to buy that one. My 72 Jazz, Rick & SEI never leave the house now. Maybe if I do the Albert Hall
Doing good Karl. Now retired so life is good. So you finally got yourself a Rik. Nice one. You have had some amount of gear since we met. I got the Mex P/J active earlier this year and i'm very impressed by it. I still love my Jazz tho and keep going back to it. Hope you are both doing well tho. All the best Dave
