1. For me its the Boyband or Girlband thing that i just don't get. Some of them will have maybe one person that is actually talented ie Gary Barlow but rest of the band are stage fillers. Would they survive as solo artists, probably not IMHO. Some of the other bands mentioned i'm not a fan of altho they had occasional songs i liked. Was never a huge fan of Stones either but when i hear their popular songs anywhere i kinda enjoy the odd song but couldn't listen to an album of them. Same with Beatles. Heard a tribute band at a mates 60th and was surprised how much i enjoyed them and new all the songs too. And they were my first single at age 3 All My Loving Even The Smiths i would like the occasional single but albus would be a NO NO. Death Metal thing i've never really got either but i think that is probably just an age thing. Dave
2. Think the post explains why he's an ex-pro. Good musicians need to adapt to other people they play with whether they are Pros or Amatuers. Being a pro shouldn't make any difference in the way you behave and treat others. Best to move on and look at forming a new band without him. Dave
3. Shame and hope they either get it back or as suggested a donation page is set up for them. Still don't get how it was stolen if they live in it. Where were the band when it was stolen ? Like the idea of the camper conversion type thing tho. Dave
4. Its not knocking the luthier but more asking the question of what makes this particular bass worth that kind of money. I'm a big fan off luthiers providing first class quality basses but you have to ask at what price and what are you getting for your money. I freely admitted that i don't know much about Lull basses hence asking the question. I bought an Overwater 6 string custom in 2010 and looked at many basses and couldn't see what the benefits were of the more expensive basses. I guess if you try a bass and it just feels right for you then money shouldn't be an issue if you can afford it of course. Think i'll have a wee look at Lull basses to see what they are all about. I do admit to liking the standard T bird shown above by Happy Jack. Dave
5. Not usuually my kind of music but have to say i thoroughly enjoyed it. Some nice bits of people just having fun doing what they do. Excellent Dave
6.
Dave I've ordered the bass on the left below. 100% same spec. When the spec confirmation came through (weeks later), it was wrong...four string, vintage style scratchplate. Considering the money, it was all horribly vague. Now I know what it's like operating a small business; Mark is probably drowning in emails from suppliers, sellers and buyers. The team there have always been very nice when I've needed to speak to them, but maybe it's time for them to take on someone to handle their admin! It doesn't matter whether the bass is £250 or £5,000 you have to know that what you're getting is what you expect to be getting. I'm almost tempted to contact Lull direct prior to shipping to ensure that what they despatch is 100% what I've ordered. It feels awful, but I just have this nagging doubt that something won't be right. Anyhow, I ordered it in the first week of June, it should be here next month. Should. P
Its a nice looking bass and I don't know much about Lull basses but not sure i'd pay that kind of money for what seems a standard looking bass. Are they that good ? I was expecting exotic looking woods or fancy electronics to be honest. Sorry if my response is a bit negative. You have obviously tried one and know how good they are. Wishing you all the very best with it. Dave
7.
Never been there, bought my first Lull through BD, which was pretty smooth. I have a custom Lull on order; I've supplied fills specs, photos etc...I covered the specifics of the order with them, paid a 25% deposit, but they didn't confirm the specification for ages and when they did it was pretty much all wrong. I honestly nearly sh*t myself. I did contact Lull direct and they confirmed they're building what I want BUT if there's anything wrong/incorrect, it's going back. I mean, I'm paying nearly £4.5k...I really would have expected better comms, especially as it's a custom build. I'm still not going to be happy (or mad) until I pop the catches on the case.
I'm looking forward to seeing your bass on here. £4.5k for a bass is quite a fair bit and must be pretty special. Sure it will all go well and you'll be more than happy with it. Dave
8. I've only ever had good advice from Mark over past few yrs. Can't fault Bass Direct apart from the fact its too far away from me otherwise i'd be skint all the time. Another big plus is his postage as he certainly knows how to protect gear for postage and very quick delivery too. Think i need another trip down South soon. Mmmmmm Dave
9. WOW The stamina to be able to play like that for long periods. I'm so jealous. Was a big fan of them in 70's / 80's and tried copying a lot of what he did but nowhere near as brilliant. It did however allow me to play a lot faster and tighter than the standard rock music i was playing up to that point. Also let me show off a little when i auditioned Percy Jones, Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee and Richard Sinclair from Camel probably my biggest influences. Cant play like them but they were what i was aiming for. Hopefully i learned something from them all. Dave
10. Opened BC thru Firefox and the pics opened ok ??? I've had problems with Google before when using BC. Nice looking cab too. If i didn't already have the 115 and 210 i would have taken it. Too many cabs at moment and wife wouldn't appreciate another large cab GLWTS. Should sell easily Dave
11.
Pics OK for me. Clear your browser cache..?
Recently did that when i had issues with BC via Google chrome. Moderators showed me how to do it but it didn't help. Started using Firefox for 2-3 weeks then google issue cleared itself. Will try again. I was just curious to see the cabinet as i have the OBC115 & 210 Dave Edit :- tried again and same warning from Norton. The report states that the site is known for identity theft and not to use ? Dave
12. Pics won't open. Comes up with Dangerous Website message ? Dave
13. I have 3 cases. 1 that came with my 2nd hand Jaydee 1 that came with my Overwater 6er but also used for my Fenders. (shaped style case) 1 for my other Overwater due to length of headstock and my Warwick Thumb altho i need to add additional packing for the Warwick. (square style case) I use a gig bag for rehearsals tho as there's no great risk of damage. If a bass fits the shaped case i use that as its easier to handle and lighter. Considered getting proper flightcase for my Warwick cause its now quite a rare bass in great condition and standard cases are usually too wide for it. Other than that don't see a need for one case per bass. Mine all hang on wall in the Bass Cave. Dave
14. I have a Dingwall NG2 5 string and its by far the lightest bass i have. I was suffering from a shoulder and chest ache last year and tried the duo strap idea for a while. That helped by spreading the load evenly across both shoulders. Not sure if that would help lower back but was thinking that if weight is on one shoulder you may be twisting the spine a bit to compensate. Just a theory mind but you can rig up a similar strap by using 2 cheapo straps across each shoulder just to try it. Failing that i would do the exercise thing and strengthen your core. That usually works for me and then i get lazy again and the aches return and its a vicious cycle Few back and stomach exercises should benefit you no matter what. Dave
15. I have the HT322 and it is a belter. The HT series are what bass cabs should sound like. Proper drivers in proper cabs built to last. This is a helluva good price for this rig. GLWTS Dave
16.
Not kidding. Get back from the crematorium to the reception, and put on a gig in memory with all the musos who have attended. Or put on a gig in celebration of the guy who passed, consisting of anyone who knew and/or played with him. In effect a jam night of friends. Sadly I've seen too many of both types over the last few years.
I like that. Who knows maybe when i go of course many of my bandmates over the years are a wee bit older than me Still like the idea tho Dave
17. Are you guys serious about the wakes. Just i've never heard of that before and don't know whether you are kidding ? Dave
18.
yes but which glasses do I use?and even they're no use if the stage is half dark.
one of these might help
19. And here's me thinking it was just our band. At 57 i'm the 2nd youngest with the guitarist's (70) son at 29 on kys, moothy, gtr, backing vox, and fiddle. He's the talented one in a band of 6. Reading thru this thread i can see all the tell-tale signs and the rehearsals mentioned above are almost a duplicate of what happens with us. It still all sounds good at the end of the day, but you need to be on your toes when one of the guitarists decides to take a stroll down the ad-lib extended solo route Dave
20. Bought the BLT album mainly for Jack Bruce and thought his guitar work was fantastic. Day of the Eagle another fav song for me too. Need to have a listen to Bridge of Sighs as it seems popular album on this thread. Dave
21. WOW that must be some sound from that rig. Good price for the Orange on its own with a flightcase let alone it comes with a thunderous cab. GLWTS Dave
22.
Thank you for the kind words both here and on the "how was your gig" thread . I am humbled. All the very best to you sir too and a big thank you to all the nice people on basschat that have wished me well. Sometimes the world is a nice place
These are the bits on BC i really enjoy and make it all worthwhile. Dave
23. If its a difficult part to learn i download onto CD because it seems to make the playback clearer. I don't download as an MP3 but as a full recording. I do go thru a lot of recordable CD's tho Guess the various posts above have explained why the CD recording always sounds far better to on the ear. Dave
24.
Did the gig that was the subject of my happy band tale thread last night and had a blast. The odd problem with the sound "on stage" but was apparently good out front. Every one enjoyed the two acoustic covers acts that started proceedings and then we had them all dancing and singing along to an hour or so of Stereophonics songs. I wore myself out and have spent most of today in bed as a "Fibromyalgia payback" but It was worth it. Mention in despatches to our very own KevB who came along to see us too.
Well done Raymondo. Great that you did it, enjoyed it and even tho suffering afterwards deep down you know it was worth it. Hopefully you can do another occasional gig or even a short spell on stage with them would be good. Pretty sure the new bassist would be ok with you doing a few songs. Take care and wish you all the very best. Dave
25.
Last night we had the most aggro I've had at an Edinburgh gig, oddly enough whilst doing a barely amped acoustic trio set in a tiny pub on Rose Street. It was fine until a group of guys in their 40s and 50s came in. They were conservatively dressed middle class guys of the sort you might see going to the rugby. I think it was one of those things where a group of work mates go out and drink rounds and no-one wants to admit that they can't really hold their drink. First they were shouting requests at us (we don't do requests), then trying to sing over us, then one of the drunker of the party stumbled into the guitar player. The guitar player is no shrinking violet, and some curt words were had. The bar staff then told them that none of the group would be served, but didn't explicitly tell them to leave. Just when we thought things were starting to calm down, we ended up with one of them squaring up to the band and threatening the guitarist as his friends tried to usher him out of the door. About half of the party (who had already been served) stayed around giving us dirty looks for the next hour while the others hung around outside. No-one got hurt, but the gig was no fun at all and not worth what they were paying us. I do think the bar staff could have dealt with things better too.
Bar staff should have had that under control at an early stage before it reached that point. Punters shouldn't be hassling the band in that way. Disgraceful. What bar was it out of curiosity ? Dave
