1. My wife goes to all gigs. She historically has played a part doing the lighting desk and effects etc in rock or Prog bands. She enjoys the same music as me and altho she has had to sit on her own during the gig she doesn't seem to mind. We do tend to do everything together even outside the band, cycling, hill walking, gardening, motorbikes and even shopping so its kind of expected from both of us and after 28yrs together we must be doing something right. Edit to add that if i was playing twice a week she might decide it was too much for her and i wouldn't object if she wanted to stay at home more. Dave
2. Has anyone tried these cabs with a GK1001RBii ? I've just bought an Orange 2x10 mini cab from fellow BC'er EddieHoffman to match my Orange OBC115. Due next week. Gonna be few weeks before i get a chance due to band holidays and was just wondering how they would pair up. If not i might well look at a AD200b head at some point. Dave
3. Yep been round the houses too and always same bass i go back to. My Jazz is my normal goto bass when its my own choice. My Warwick Thub nicest bass to play but Jazz fits most styles better. Currently having to use a Fender PJ because of the style of music and covers it gives more variation but still 4 string. Done the 6, 5, fretless but back to 4 fretted is the simple way. I should make that my new motto :- Keep It Simple Dave
4.
Singing and playing bass has always been a huge challenge for me. I'm getting better and the separation from my fingers and voice is getting a lot better. I don't have a great voice, however my band has allowed me free reign with backing vocals. Because we gig a lot, I've had the opportunity to really work on this. I still have a lot of room for improvement. I really like singing and being on the front line. Any stories about singing and playing bass you guys care to share? Blue
Is that you in attachment Blue ? You certainly don't look your age sir. Well done. Must be all that good living Dave
5.
Wire wool is good on Warwick frets - I find Dettox spray good for cleaning off dirt
I tend to use a little bit of brasso wadding (use to be duraglit) on my warwick frets. Not heavy hande but just enough to clean them as they do dull down and tarnish a bit. Luthier in Edinburgh at McIntyre Guitars told me to use Briwax on my Thumb NT instead of warwick beeswax as it isn't sticky and gives a nice clean and smooth polish. Dave
6. I bought one 2nd hand bass that had smell of cigerette smoke and it took several cleans to finally get rid of it but other than that one i've not had any bad experiences. I completely clean top to bottom when i change strings and usually wipe the bass down during and after a gig especially if sweating. Like to keep the neck and strings dry and clean when playing. Dave
7. I've always been told within few days and only time i didn't get it i already new. When i was setting up my gear at the audition the band were quite happy to tell me the guy just before me was ideal for the job and would fit in really well. Bit of a damper for me and i kinda lost interest and thought they were a bunch of arrogant twats. They did however contact me a year later to ask if i was still interested as the guy they picked left for another band. I enjoyed telling them where to go and why. Courtesy costs nothing and most bands i've auditioned with have been straight up front and let me know there and then i had the job. I'm not the best bass player in the world but i am generally well liked socially and always respect people for who they are so i guess that always helps. Dave
8. I've always found a tonal difference between the maple necks and Rosewood versions. Not sure why that happens but when i've tried the same models but with different neck woods the maple sounded a bit sharper or twangy and more suited for slap styles than a rosewood one which to me sounded more rounded. I'm no expert on the different pick ups or country of origin and find them pretty much same. Dave
9.
Postage from Sri Lanka might prove a bit of an issue ...
Have to admit that thought was going thru my head too. Good job it was clarified Dave
10. 4 or 12 ohm. That's a bit of an odd layout. Should it be 4 or 16 ohm ? 2 off 8ohm speakers in parallel = 4 ohm in series 16 ohm Nice cab. Dave
11. Tried them but not overly impresse. No real reason just not what i was looking for. I like the Fender Nickels and don't think they are too expensive either. Dave
12. I was wondering where the scam was too but if its asking to click a link then that makes sense. I guess you should always access payments for any system via their website and using your password. Dave
13. Have this same rig and it works a treat. Loud with great tonal range and plenty of depth. Cuts through a 5 piece band mix very well. And its easy to carry. I paid a lot more for mine too at full price so this looks like a steal. GLWTS Dave
14.
I'm now in a band that rehearses when we want and gigs when we want even if the songs aren't polished enough. We record the stuff ourselves using a tiny digital 8 track thingy.....it's laid back and it works. Find a band where you're comfortable bro.
This is where i am at moment. I'm comfortable with the guys in the band. Its fun at reahearsals, we take it seriously but we enjoy the challenges of being in a band. The band is currently just finalising their set list but they don't want to gig every week. Maybe just once a month or special occasions but that works for me. I've been in bands playing twice a week and it becomes a chore and more like work than a hobby. Enjoy what you're doing is the way to go. Dave
15. Think the mis-match by many is based on the speaker size and air movement rather than ohms. Many agree that you keep speaker sizes all the same. However i have been using all sorts of cabs over the years and my fav set up is a 1x15" cab witha 2x10" cab and you get a great balance of sound giving a clearer top end from the 10's that my 15 just doesn't have. My advice is try the combination you fancy and if it sounds good to you then it works. The theory of speaker size differences is irrelevant if it sounds good to you. Have fun. A 4x10 is a beast of a cab tho. Dave
16.
nOW GO Now go and stand in the corner.
That's the spirit. Keep it light hearted and fun. Makes for better reading for me. Dave
17. Love this post. I did that for years just playing the stuff i enjoy listening to. Nothing beats it but at tender age of 50 i decided i wanted to be in a band and gig again. I'm now in a band with typical age group 65-70. I'm the youngest at 56 The music is not my usual style but its great to play in a band that just wants to play what they enjoy and want to play. Majority of them also play in club / pub / function bands too. Its a compromise for me to get people i like with absolutely no hassle against music i enjoy playing but would not have been my 1st choice. Don't sell the gear as pretty sure something will pop up out the blue or you'll miss the gigging and band thing and start looking on various sites. I also live in country and travel 40 miles each way for a reahearsal every week and any gigs but i'm enjoying it so much that its not an issue for me. I even enjoy the rehearsals as a mates get together for a laugh. Dave
18.
SansAmp RBI and RPM (parallel) to the Peavey IPR1600 power amp. image url upload
Just curious how your rig is wired up with the 2 pre-amps and what cabs do you use. Is the power amp bridge for mono output. It just sounds like a really interesting set up. Cheers Dave
19. +1 for the Fishman. I was very impressed by this pedal when i heard it on youtube. Dave
20. Nice and bet it feels a lot lighter on the shoulder than the Warwicks too. Enjoy the new bass. Dave
21. Preferred sound is cross between Geddy Lee and Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple era) with fingerstyle (no plectrum tho) Current sound for covers band is somewhere between or like these using a Fender PJ. http://youtu.be/jP2EvSNHqh0 Dave
22. I use to play fingerstyle very aggressively in various rock and prog bands over the years. I used to find that when i started playing with a new band after few mths off my fingers on right hand would tighten and cramp up. I've been at rehearsals where my left hand cramped that much i was almost at stage i couldn't loosen my grip on the neck. I had to do something if i wanted to keep playing and took advice from fellow basschatters and turned the volume up and played lighter. It worked a treat and an unforseen bonus for me was i found i could play faster and more accurately. I didn't lose the aggressive style completely but i no longer got aches or cramps. If you are changing your style of playing maybe do it in small stages at a time. Dave
23. As mentioned see GP to be absolutely sure and that you aren't making things worse. Sounds like you've over-done it a bit. At 32 its unlikely to be athritis or similar. After you described what you've been doing with your fretting etc i would say its more than likely a strain of some kind. I would def see your GP tho. Dave
