What do you value about your local music shop?
dmccombe7 replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
My nearest worthwhile bass stockist is Guitar Guitar in Glasgow which is 40 miles from me. Friendly enough and a reasonably decent selection of basses although i feel they have more Fender or Sandberg at the moment but that's fine for me as i like both. They are happy to let me try anything out when i visit and have only had pleasant experiences in their new downstairs bass dept. Their selection of amps is very limited and they don't stock the full range of any gear. Recently asked about Mesa Subway range and they had the 15 cab and if i wanted anything else in i had to fork out approx £500 as a deposit altho its fully refundable either way so why have it ? If i try and don't like i still get my deposit back and they have to sell the amps anyway. That annoys me a bit. Generally i find their prices a fair bit higher than other on line shops i use like GAK or Bass Direct which are the 2 shops i use most. I never buy strings locally as they charge full price by looks of it. All in all i would go in and try something and then see if i can get on line cheaper. If not much in it i would go back and barter with them to lower their price a bit. Some on line shops have a price match that they advertise quite clearly on their home page yet when you ask about a cheaper item elsewhere they told me they couldn't match that so why advertise it then. That annoys me too. I've used Bass Direct more than anywhere else as i find i get ggood helpful advice when i call them about something. I don't get pressurised to buy by Mark. He's just a nice guy to talk with. So much so i drove down from Glasgow to find a nice 5 string bass. Had the notion for a Sandberg or similar and ended up with a gorgeous Dingwall NG2 that just blew the others away. I simply pointed to a particular bass and he handed it to me to try out. That's what i like. Dave -

Harley dealerships do it quite regularly. Edinburgh Harley have just moved to a new shop near Hermiston gate and their official open day is mid Aug i think altho i was sure it was a Sat. West Coast Harley in Glasgow have open days over a weekend so bands on both days weather permitting. Dave

Bannermans does rock gigs

Not sure if this is actually a serious topic after watching a bit of that. My Jazz is my goto bass for any project i'm involved with. I've used it for Prog, Classic Rock, Metal, 70's pop covers band, Blues, Blues/Funk rock and currently with my Glam Rock covers band. I can vary the controls enough to cope with most situations. I like its clean and simple tone compared to my PJ Deluxe. Dave

Quit my band, and no new plans to gig...
dmccombe7 replied to AndyTravis's topic in General Discussion
Good decision on the gigging thing. You need to enjoy kids at their early years. Wee stunner there sir. You can always get another band together no probs/ Out of curiosity whats the blue badge thing ? Dave -
I usually just press the SHARE button on Youtube and then COPY and then PASTE onto BC page. Dave

I looped it over top horn of my Jazz bass as my issue was a strain rather than a more permanent injury and didn't fancy changing anything on my basses

You can fit it few ways. Depending on your strap lok type both straps can fit a specific type (can't remember which one it is tho) 2nd way is to use a strap between the 2 strap bottons and attach the other strap to the cross strap hidden behind the bass. 3rd way is to do what Damien did and attach a 2nd strap lock reset into the bass body and when not in use the lok is flush with the bass. 4th way is to loop the other strap over the top horn Dave

My NT4 is an 89 and its a heavy beast but nothing else sounds like it to me anyway. Those Mega straps look good tho. Might try one of those for all my basses to be honest. I had a similar but cheaper make few yrs back and the plastic buckles snapped and it put me off them but they look a lot sturdier. Think i bought the cheap one from the Bass Centre or something like that. Dave

I had a shoulder and back problem for a bit couple of yrs ago and bought one of the Gruvgear Duo straps. Distributes the weight evenly across both shoulders. Worked a treat and once my shoulder and back were sorted i went back to using it as a standard strap and its the comfiest strap i've ever had. Would have to agree with Chris tho that if its that heavy maybe you should look for something lighter. My Thumb NT4 is too heavy for me to wear for a full gig but won't sell cause its gorgeous to play but i only use on recording gigs when needed. Dave

I see what you did there Dad3353 They would be shoe strings then.

Not sure about cleaning strings but always handy for the post gig fish supper

That's an interesting one so i guess light touched players strings should last longer than the heavy hande player in theory. Curious to see if anyone can validate this one. Dave

Yep i've been caught with the evilbay copy thing too. I now only buy from recognised shops or suppliers. I used to use Elite Stadiums stainless on my Warwick Thumb mainly because that's what originally came with them from Warwick and they were bright and zingy. As far as i know the Warwick strings were made to sound like the Elites. might even have been Elite that made them for Warwick ? who knows Dave

Scout around for a decent price on DR's or D'Addarios. I found Bass Direct to be cheaper than Strings Direct or Stringbusters.

Too many Reality, cooking or quiz shows on these days. Some decent live music shows would be great Wouldn't mind shows with some of the older band live clips like a re-run of even OGWT at its peak. Dave
