1. Put on my facebook and who knows you might get to be a millionaire this time next year. Dave
2.
Why yes, I made nearly £8 from book sales last month, Its a start. Like putting your money in a "good" bank. It's an investment that can only grow. On the plus side that's more than i made from any books that i've never written (Please tell your friends you enjoyed it - otherwise I'll have to keep playing Mustang Sally to idiots forever) Wait a minute i've been in the audience for Mustang Sally. ........DAMN !!!!! i'm stupid
3. If you are in habit of depping for them then i would expect you to know them a bit. Are they in the habit of changing there plans. If not then i'd just be happy to do the one gig and just let it go at that. If they are in habit of changing minds then worth saying that in future if you put in the diary then you expet to do it as its a paid job and you could be turning down other work by agreeing to it in first place. Dave
4.
I have a big one which frequently makes the earth move... at least that's what my girlfriend tells me! I'm here all week....
5. Always preferred the jazz bass to be honest but recently had a notion for a P bass but rather than keeping it limite to a P i went for the deluxe PJ and with the blend i have the best of both worlds with my preferred jazz neck feel. Dave
6. Always found this one difficult. Not just to learn the notes but to have the stamina to play the riff continuously. I had only just discovered Camel with The Live Record. Coming from a Rock background this was by far my biggest challenge at that time. http://youtu.be/5ADW5aJfY7U
7. Amazon showing only 5 star reviews. That's a good sign. Lots of great comments on here too. A new career on the go. You might be hanging up your bass now that you're a writer. Good luck with it. Dave
8. Is this turning into a "Real bassists play big cabs" kinda thing. I'm game altho flightcased or 2 cabs ? Ah well, maybe not. Now where's my Markbass combo. Dave
9. Played thru a few Ampeg rigs and couldn't get used to the sound. Then tried an Orange AD200b thru a Hartke 8x10 and couldn't believe the tone. Not sure if it was down to the amp or the cab that made the difference but probably the best sound i've heard in a long time. Thunderous low end but clear sharp mids. I now have severe GAS for Orange AD200b. I've already got OBC115 cab and it sounds great with my existing amps. Not sure whether to get another 115 cab or a 410 or if poss pick up the 210 Orange cab. Aaahhhhh GAS is a nightmare. Dave
10. Sorry to hear. Hope you get them back. Then string the feckers up and remove their bits with a rusty knife. Dave
11. Looks good. Paperback ordered from Amazon. Thanks for writing. Looking forward to my life story Dave
12. Markbass do a NEO 8x10 i think. Think Orange do one as well Dave
13. Phil Lynott, Roger Glover and Glenn Hughes for reasons already mentioned. Add to that Gene Simmons from Kiss as i was a big fan of all of them around 1976. Destroyer album was and still is one of my fav albums. Main reasons for them were Jailbreak album was just out and bought same time as Destroyer. 2 of my fav rock albums. Roger Glover because of Made In Japan. Bass playing was pure heavy Rock. Then i heard Glenn Hughes on California Jam and was blown away by his playing. All these happened around same time i starte playing bass and these were the songs i was trying to play. Dave
14. Bandmix or even Gumtree are 2 i've used along with Join My Band. Not sure distances involved for you but if it helps i travel 40 miles each way along country roads to rehearse and most gigs are gonna be approx 40-50mies from me as rest of the band are based in same area where they rehearse. Its well worth it tho cause i finally am very settled with this band. Easy going, no pressure and all great musicians. Wouldn't give up. I only started playing again 6 yrs ago after 15yrs away from it and i've lost count number of bands i've been in. I live in countryside and need to travel a minimum 20-40 miles no matter what band it is. Dave
15. Not had other band members suggest i change bass but have done myself. Jazz didn't cut thru Prog band mix. Warwick was too mid punch growl and also too heavy to play a long rehearsal or gig these days. Overwater was ok but didn't feel right in the Prog band. Bought myself a Dingwall NG2 5 stringer and it was an excellent fit for the band i was in. Left the band 3mths later but there you go. I would def thought the Yamaha would suit a Prog band. I personally would take offence to that if it was an originals band but as pointed out if a tribute Prog then looking same as originals is more or less a requirement. I guess if you enjoy the band and have the funds to get the bass required or already have it then go for it. Dave
16. Saw a Bowie tribute band last year and being an earlier Bowie fan i thought Width of a Circle and Moonage Daydream stole the show maybe because the bassist that night was sh*t hot and on those two songs he really just went for it. Close my eyes and it could have been Trevor Bolder up there playing on stage. Dave
17. I have a mixture that i pick and choose depending on type of band i'm playing with. Have the Roland GT-6B mfx. that i tend to use for compressor, tuner and different bass amp tones. I have main channel as dry with only the comp used. Next channel up from that set to sound Ampeg valve tone with a Rik so it has that high end click and slight distortion on the 15" cab emulator. Like to think its my early Glenn Hughes Deep Purple era sound. Comp on this too. Other channels i have set up specifically for my own enjoyment are echo, reverb, for fretless use. Like some of the other channels but very rarely use for more than above items. On the other hand i have a Polytune, Aphex comp, that i nearly always have with me and on occasion add TC Echo a7 TC Reverb as required. Current band is blues base funk / rock so tuner and comp really all i use. Dave
18.
Yes. I've been in too many bands that don't have a plan when you walk into the rehearsal room and don't even have a plan for the next rehearsal when the leave the room. That's a waste of time. You only get tight by gigging but you all need to be confident walking out on stage knowing you know what's happening. So there's a balance to be had.
I always like to rehearse songs to a point i know them well enough i don't need to concentrate on them too much and they come naturally. That way i can enjoy the gigs more and have fun doing what i enjoy most. Well almost anyways but that's another Off Topic conversation Dave
19. I auditioned for a Glam Rock covers band and was given the job and asked to learn a set list of 34 songs in 3weeks for first 2 gigs on the Fr & Sat. The plan was to have a couple of rehearsals but unfortunately singer Dad passed away and we just couldn't fit it in. He still wanted to go ahead with his commitments and we did the gigs no rehearsals. We talked thru the songs after first week on phone and found they were playing in different keys from actual songs. Had to relearn several songs in their key. Gigs went really well and i was complimented both by the band and audience and organisers both as a bassist and band. All great i thought. Then the following week he decided to change the set list and wanted me to learn another 20 songs for 10days time for another gig. I had to apologize but this was a bit too much for me and couldn't keep this level of commitment. We parted on very good terms but it did explain why they had been thru 17 bassists in their history. The 2 gigs i did play with them fealt more like a basic jam session than being part of a band. They had been together for approx 8-10 yrs. They had the attitude that because they play every week and usually 2 gigs every week they didn't need to rehearse which was ok for them as they already knew all the songs. I had never played any of the songs before. Current band rehearse every week altho its more for fun and social gathering of mates than anything else. They don't want to play every week either. Dave
20. Depends on gig, stage size etc. I like to have a spare bass but failing that a spare battery and set of strings will do fine. I'm a great believer in not wasting time between songs. Its a vibe killer when you have agood rockin band but they doodle, tune every stop or talk between every song and usually a load of crap that means nothing and the audience don't care anyways. Dave
21.
On the subject of ace Canadian bands - Max Webster. Basschatters of a certain age may have caught them touring with Rush on the "Tour of the Hemispheres". They were incredible. A sort of Pop/Rock/Prog/Zappa amalgam. And they even managed to sneak on to TOTP... Their latter-day Bassist, Dave Myles was a brilliant player - fantastic plectrum-Precision sound. Kim Mitchell still plays in Canada and has survived a recent heart attack. A unique guitarist and writer.
Saw them with Rush late 70's Farewell to Kings tour i think. They certainly impressed me as a support band and subsequently bought the album. Dave
22. Some bands that don't appear to be very well known or popular in UK Canadian band SAGA have been following since late 70's and still playing world tours. http://youtu.be/sdyY...NHSjMrodw8-Q3UA Starcastle another band from late 70's and altho bassist passed away few yrs back they have continued to play together. Bassist was main songwriter and original member. Arjen Luccasen is maybe better known from his other band Ayreon but this was a solo album combining own compositions with cover versions. Also has Rutger Hauer doing the talking parts All very Prog i'm afraid. Apologies to the Non-proggers amongst us but hope the enlightened like it Dave
23. Have to say i kinda like that Gibson bass and if priced circa £800 i'd certainly give it a try if looking at basses in that style. You could say there were better basses with same shape but then again why do people by Fenders when there are so many other "better" basses of that shape. The Gibson name is still a good selling point. Of course if it fealt like a plank of wood and sounded crap then that's a different story. On looks alone i would certainly put it on my list of maybe's and one worth a try. Dave
24. I have looke at them over past few years but always seemd to go in another direction. Not really sure why. Would have to say i've never seen a bad word for them. Seen them used by many well known session bassists at some very large venues. Dave
