1. One guitarist I work with managed to lose his left middle finger at the knuckle in a bandsaw accident many years ago. Being both an ardent music lover and a stubborn git, once it had healed he taught himself how to play left handed. Once he'd done that he decided to specialise in finger picking style and is quite possibly one of the finest players in that style that I've come across!
 2.
I have no doubt about his technical excellence and it's quite clear that many people derive great pleasure from his playing - which is wonderful - but, and I'm truly sorry there has to be a 'but' - but I just can't get it.
I'mafraid I just put him in the same box as Jimmi Hendrix - very clever, but you couldn't pay me to listen to it...
 3. When he was on I was out.
 4. It sounds like a defective capacitor. If you've only just bought it then take it back.
 5.
seen my soldering? http://www.flickr.com/photos/49793253@N07/...57626892509872/
Ah. Taking it back is looking like quite an attractive option...
 6.
If you solder anything then you'll void the guarantee and I'd bet some (many?) dealers would use that as an excuse to avoid honouring any warranty commitments if you have any other problems.
True, but if you do the job neatly enough and don't mention the fact you did resolder a connection then there's no way anyone is going to know you did it.
 7. It won't be the pickups, it'll be a wire come adrift.
 8.
Yeah it's from their Mexico factory, where they do....
LMAO - you beat me to it!
 9.
For those of you that thought the Adam Clayton bass was a bit 'over the top'. . .
Blimey... it's a Liberace signature model...
 10. Dead easy. You've reached a plateau. It's quite normal to hit them whilst learning anything that requires skill. The solution is to just keep on practicing and don't worry about it, you'll probably progress past it and look back with astonishment once you've done it!
 11. No problem. You might want to check that the shaft of the switch is the same size as the one you are replacing though or you might have problems fitting it through the front face of the bass.
 12. It's a 4PDT switch. You can get them from here. HTH
 13. I've been an SR505 owner since they bought them out (5 string version of the SR500). Although I own other basses, it's still my main 'grab it' bass and gets used for everything from rock through to folk. The neck is the fastest of any production bass, the electronics are more than adequate and you can wear it all night without shoulder ache.
 14. Well it's do-able from an electronics perspective as long as you accept that any warranty on the CS-3 will be null and void. I have to say though, I don't actually see any tangible benefit...
 15. A big reason why very few of these appear on the SH market is that time has probably seen most of them fall apart or be trashed. Although there is a tendency to elevate these 80's copies to 'cult status' they were nothing special and just about any PB copy would do at least as well, if not better.
 16.
I fixed an electro acoustic guitar which wasn't picking up the E string at all. The owner had had a go at filing down the bottom of the saddle and got it squint, meaning that it wasn't sitting flush and square in the recess. Put the bridge bottom down on a known flat surface - does it rock at all?
+1 The bridge passes the vibration through to the pickup - an airgap there is bad news.
 17. Underneath the white plastic bridge there is a piezo pickup 'strip'. Slacken the strings off and remove the bridge (it should just slide out) and make sure that the pickup is seated flat.
 18.
Well I found out today the jack socket on my bass hasn't been earthed since I've owned it. I always thought it sounded kind of thin and I had loads of problems with it not working properly live. Stuck an earth wire on today, sounds instantly so much thicker and nicer, definitely louder. Is this possible or am I just getting high off the sanding sealer drying in the corner?
Quite a few JBs rely on the earth connection from the pots being passed to the jack socket. It's not outside the realms of possibility that oxidisation between the metal surfaces has created a resistance. My JB had a similar setup and I didn't trust it so, like you, I soldered an extra wire between the socket and the back of one of the volume pots. I think you can go back to sniffing your sealant without too many worries...
 19.
I think it ultimately starts with the player. Put someone else playing Tim Commerford's gear and it won't sound like him.Likewise,Tim C will sound similar to how he does on his fancy rig with pretty much anything. There is a video of Billy Sheehan playing a Danelectro at a trade show through a Pigtronix Philosophers Tone pedal, and he sounds just like Billy Sheehan.
+1 Over the last 30 years I've gone through Roland, Hartke, Fender, Ampeg and Peavey and still sound like me.
 20.
My "trendy" new phone is in phone hospital.
Ah. As my old grandad used to say 'never trust something that thinks it's smarter than you are'. EDIT: Which in my case also includes breakfast cereals...
 21.
Ok quick question about the ohm-switch at the back. If I switch it to 4 ohm would it function like a normal 4 ohm amp in that if I plugged in 1 8ohm cabinet would the cabinet receive just 250W?
True up to a point, but the impedance switch on the back selects a different set of output transformer taps. Using the wrong setting won't do your amp a lot of good...
 22.
I got a new amp, the ashdown perfect 10, 30w. I kept hearing a phone ringing periodically, and realised it was the amp. seems worse on more gain. Is this a defect in my particular amp, or something else? I'm a little shy and don't want to take it back unless i know it is broken. Playing the basic Yamaha bass through it. Cheers
Well there's nothing in that amp that could emulate a phone ringing. I'm guessing that what you're hearing is your mobile phone doing an update on the network - some amps seem more succeptible to picking this up than others. Try sticking your phone over the other side of the room or switching it off. HTH

 25.
Girl Gone Bad by Van Halen was called Ripley when Eddie wrote it, because, of course, he wrote it while playing a Ripley. I always hoped it was named after Ripley in Alien. Sadly much more prosaic a reason.
I won't even ask what you thought Kramer Vs Kramer was based on...
