1.
Seriously, the only consideration for us is that we have two guitarists, so we make sure one goes each side of the kit. I couldn't give a monkeys which side I'm on really. We do always seem to set up the same way at the same venues though.
Exactly this. I think it was once 'traditional' for the bass to be to the drummer's left although I don't see why it should make the slightest bit of difference to how anyone plays.
It doesn't matter where you stand. However you should always be facing forward looking at the audience. They are the reason why you are on stage in the first place.
Also this.
2. I thought Bruno Mars was brilliant! I like all of his singles but this was the first time I've seen any live stuff. Chili Peppers were just Chili Peppers. Same thing they've been doing for 30 years. Nothing special but at least they're not old, fat and boring yet. Still very entertaining.
3. Cheers chaps. I reckon I'll try a set out and see how they go.
4. Anyone used them? Good? Bad? Ugly? I'm thinking of trying them out. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of them.
5. Not necessarily cheap but Sims are very good. http://www.simscustom.com/
6. I've always used .88mm tortex ones. If I were you I'd go to your local music shop and buy a few different picks and see what you find most comfortable before you go and order a bunch. There's no 'too thick' or 'too thin' for bass. Whatever you feel most comfortable with is the best.
7. I just bought an Ashdown CL-610 from a guy on here. Used it for the first time at rehearsal on Sunday and it sounds great! Fairly light too, which is a bonus.
8. Hmmm... The Arctic ones don't look as white as I want either. What the hell do I want?!
9. Cheers for that. That's one nice looking bass! I'm getting confused now though... The Squier VM is Olympic White and it's a brilliant white. Both Olympic and Arctic White on Fenders look slightly off-white, which I think Arctic is supposed to be. Is it just my eyes?
10. Brilliant. Cheers.
11. Does anybody know if a Fender P (either MIA or MIM standard) is available in Olympic White as a standard colour? All I can seem to find are a bunch of Arctic White ones. The Squier VM is Olympic and it looks great. I want that look on a Fender. Thanks.
12. I just bought an Orange TB500 from Martin. It took a little longer to get the cash together than I anticipated but Martin was very patient and accommodating. The amp was well packed and delivered quickly with no problems whatsoever. A pleasure to do business with.
13. I've decided to sell my Ampeg SVT-CL. I believe it's a 1998/9 limited edition version, made in the USA. The only 'limited edition' part is the red and blue SVT logo on the front which was to commemorate Ampeg's 30th anniversary. The amp has been kept in a flight case it's entire life and, consequently, has no scratches, dings or tears. I am including the flight case in the sale and will also throw in an Ampeg padded cover. [s]£800.[/s] [s]£750.[/s] £700. Collection only due to size and weight. Sorry the pics aren't brilliant... 15. A few years ago my old band toured with a Canadian glam rock band called Robin Black. One night, early on in the tour, we played one of their songs in soundcheck for a laugh. They heard us playing and decided WE should play it as their encore. Every night from then on they'd finish their set, we'd come on, pick up their gear and start playing their most popular song, often to the crowd's bewilderment. Then the band would gradually join us on stage to finish the song. After that we'd give their gear back and they'd play a couple more encores and then leave. That was a fun tour.
16. Anyone seen the Ashdown Nate Mendel signature distortion? Judging by this video it sounds pretty good! http://youtu.be/tMe3e-fQeyo Might have to try one out.
17. He doesn't look as though he's doing a lot in the way of actually 'playing' in the first video. His hands don't move much, if at all. Certainly when you compare it to the second video anyway. Maybe it was Joe's idea so it made everything symmetrical.
18. I thought Hendrix did both from time to time? I could be wrong but I'm sure someone here once told of a friend (or possibly themselves) that played right-handed with the strings upside down due to learning on a friend's lefty bass. I also have a lefty friend that strings normal for a lefty. He once broke his Thunderbird in half during the first song at a gig in London and, due to being from New York, didn't have a spare. A guy from the support band gave him a Thunderbird strung righty that he played for the rest of the set. He said by the end of the first song he'd got used to it and he could play fine.
19. My school had a white/white/rosewood Squier Affinity Precision. It didn't play very well and there was a missive chunk missing from the scratch plate, around the controls. At one point the cavity was filled with Wotsits. Then it packed up altogether. I started taking my own after that.
20. Try Hot Rox in Nottingham. http://www.hotroxuk.com/ I've never had to get an amp fixed there myself but they've been good to a lot of friends over the years. Or, if you happen to be making a trip down South at any point soon, take it straight to Marshall in Milton Keynes.
