I agree with the idea of more watts = more headroom but I do feel the older amps were over engineered and under rated (in wattage terms). There are a lot of churned out high rated amps that don't really deliver what (watt!?) they promise. I do think a lot of it is about how speaker technology has come on. An old valve amp through a modern cab can still push air albeit a little more polluted!

My Vox AC50 seems as loud as my Markbass combo but very gritty sounding through the old Foundation cab. Putting the Vox head through the Mark combo speaker makes you realise how powerful these old amps really are. Despite the humble power rating. My Markbass is the best amp I've ever owned but I wonder if it will be working as well as a 1964 Vox in 50 years time. I guess modern power ratings are a bit meaningless ( like government stats on unemployment figures ) and seductive. Loud is loud despite what it says on the label. First decent amp I owned was a Trace AH150 that could shake the rafters of any club in East Lancashire and a university or two!

The original speaker is a Celestion and there are no rips or damage however it's rated at 50 watts so obviously unless you stack 'em it's not going to take 50 watts of valve amp! I'm thinking of replacing it with a more contemporary 18" - any suggestions? Here's a pic of the type installed. Once I've got it sorted I'll attempt some sound clips

Here's my old faithful Hartke 4 x 10 Transporter cab. It's the one with aluminium speakers and puts out 300 watts into 8ohms. It's not too heavy and sits on 4 castors to wheel it around. It's finished in carpet which is quite scruffy but everything works as it ought to. Sounds loud and punchy. Bought as an extension to my Markbass so rarely used or pushed. You'll need to pick this up as it's big! No trades sorry - unless you have an 8 ohm 18" Celestion or Fane speaker knocking around

As part of my gear clear out I'm selling this excellent little US made combo. The amp has a 10" speaker and a closed back I've played small gigs with this as it's pretty punchy for its size. It's also been used for recording. It's quite heavy so pickup only please. You can always organise your own courier? Cheers

Since being a pasty faced teenager looking in an old Bells catalogue I've lusted after one of these. Yesterday I finally picked a YOB one in excellent condition with valve rectifier and original 18" speaker cab and I'm not disappointed - here it is with my ''74 Gibson Grabber. The amp sounds incredible. Though the speaker probably needs a recone as it farts at higher volumes. It still shifts a surprising amount of air however and doesn't weigh the equivalent of a buffalo. It's lovely and my aim is to use it for recording and possibly even a gig or two.

La Bellas have quite a high tension compared to D'Addario - I have D'Addario flats on my Precision and they sound and feel great. -

Great basses these, very well made and easy on the shoulder. I used one of these as my touring bass favoured over a USA Jazz because it was such a light bass to play over long gigs. Someone snap this up! -
I replaced the strap on my Italian built Markbass Mini combo about 12 months after buying it as the rubber was wearing away. I got a replacement from eBay that looked more or less the same but was much stronger. That's been on for the last couple of years and the rubber hasn't perished or the screws loosened. It was just a generic replacement that looked similar - guess I struck lucky it was less than four quid if I remember correctly.

Another bass on offer as part of my latest cull. This is a rare late 60s early 70s Yamaha Samurai bass made in Japan. There is a serial number stamped between the highest frets. This was purchased in a bit of a sorry state but now sounds and plays well. There are plenty of bumps and dings to the metallic blue paintwork but nothing structural. The bridge is original and comes complete with bridge cover. Both pickups and all electrics work as they should. The controls are a volume, tone and 'balancer' (blend). The silver top knobs are complete and original. The bass has a replacement thumb rest and strap buttons. There is a small repaired strip of binding on the underside of the neck. The neck is straight with a low action and good frets. The truss rod works properly ( accessed from behind the neck plate) and the bass is currently strung with flat wounds. Sorry there is no case. I'm not looking for trades but I'm happy to ship at buyers cost. Apparently these vintage models are quite sought after. It's certainly a head turner! More pics available.
