2.
4. And finally, any recomendations for a good luthier in the Sheffield/Doncaster area.
Jon Shuker http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/ That's the sort of thing he does in between making customs. He'll also give you an honest opnion.
 3.
This is a really cool thread! I kinda like the fact that he charges like 3 or 4 grand for a bass and still works in a tiny little workshop like that, gives the impression that he spends most of his money on gear and cool woods for making geet class basses!
4 grand for a hand made is just a sensible price. The huge amount of work and skill that goes into one should justify this kind of price. No one will ever get rich making hand made basses because the market won't stand the kind of price that will enable the luthier to make enough money. Reporter: "Congratulations on winning the lottery. Do you have any plans?" Luthier: "Sure, I'm going to continue my hand made bass business until the money runs out"
 4.
I think the bass he's playing now is a prototype made by the Bass Centre http://www.basscentre.com/4-string-bass-gu...-prototype.html Its a replica of his old gold Jazz The price tag is a bit steep though
Yeah that's it. Amusingly it appears to have an SX headstock shape. It's also pre-bugg3r3d as part of the customising. Sounds great though. His performance is full on, communicating constantly with the (very young) drummer and locked in.
 5.
Jeez, it's reading a thread like this that makes you realise how cheap my band are. We're way out of this league although we will only take a booking for wedding if the punters have seen us. In fact it's on the back of us playing pubs that we get wedding bookings. Ho hum.........
Wish I could play a pub now and then ......
 6.
Yeah bit concerned the drummer may not be anything like the recordings (which feature some spot on tub thumping). Especially in Fire, the way they fly through the stabs I'll be missing them left right and center if he isnt bang on! So will he probably, but its me they are looking at.... Cripes, at least I'm too old for proper collywobbles (at least I think I am). No doubt when I get there I will have a major brain fart, forget which end to blow through, write "I am a fish" 400 times, give a big old salute and collapse.....
Hey lets hear it for us old groovers Do they know how old you are? I seem to be asked that every time I reply to an advert these days. Probably because I don't use any text speak ...

Garry
"He was born in Bombay, India on 15 February 1951" says Wikipedia .. He's not known as Normfaratu for nothing

 11. Avoid bass envy, GAS, poverty and marital break up by never joining a bass forum.

 19.
I'd have to disagree, I'm afraid. Those are not the same signature. I stopped counting when I'd spotted in excess of 10 major points of variance. Significantly, impression points, force points, sweeps and inclines differ. Take the "P", "T" and "ER" in "Peter" - in one example the surface contact point for the "P" is mid letter, with the following "E" flows into a looped "P", and the remaining letters as a tail; and in the other example the base is the contact for the "P", using upward pressure to create the loop and heavy end pressure, the following "E" is standalone with a lift to create the "T", its contact point being mid letter with a distinct downward swoop and trail into the following "E". The difference is also very apparent in "Wilfer" - one example is upright, tending right to left, with distinct contact and release pressure marks, whereas the other has a distinct right lean - look in particular at the "W" (outward swoop in one example and inward for the other), "F" (length and overhang) and "R". These two signatures were not made by the same person. However, as to which one is authentic, I can't say. It's possible that both are genuine instruments, with the "signature" simply being applied by the factory, not necessarily the individual.
CSI Basschat! Fabulous!
 20. +1 ask for more pics.. There's a bunch of guys on here who live in Bristol (where teh seller is from) they would probably check it out for you. A new seller with zero feedback selling an expensive bass is always a bit worrying...
 21.
The best shimming card is the yellow meter reading card things.
I was trying to work out what "shimming" might be in contemporary parlance before remembering this was a bass players' forum I like to use IBM punch cards for shimming..
 22.
One old tip I've used for years is using the rubber rings from Grolsch bottles as cheap but effective strap locks. I think that one is pretty widely known now. Recently I've come across removing the black plastic pickup covers and thumb rest on vintage Fender reissues & giving the plastic a good scrub with a green kitchen brillo pad. It removes the horrible shiny plastic finish and gives your bass a much better retro finish without devaluing your instrument. What tips can you share?
I've gone back to Grolsch straplocks after using Dunlops for years .. My main tip comes from my drummer: Never nudge your Grannie when she's shaving. My favorite Bass Guitar Magazine tip from the old "weekend warrior" feature was from a basschatter featured there (can't remember who it was!) : Always change the cable TV channel back to CBBC after watching some relaxing recreational feature film late at night after getting in from gigs so that it's ready for the kids when they and your wife get up in the morning, hours before you. Very valuable tip that.
 23.
...it absolutley knocks the spots of my Fender in both playabillity & sound--it is AWESOME,must buy some more someday.
I might be able to help you achieve that objective http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry508346
