.... one day playing in a rock covers band in a little pub somewhere to maybe 20 people. I imagine how that might feel. I don't want adoration, I don't want hero worship, I don't even want applause.
Oh that's just normal - as a bass player you certainly won't be troubled by any of those things. If you are very (un)lucky someone may notice you are there... Seriously you should get down to some jam sessions and see the standard of playing and performance. Many people don't know which end to hold but still have a go. Generally the audience is full of people who appreciate how well you are doing because that's why they are there too...

Great groove on that rhythm. Local band Tattsyrup play a version on the Rhythm called "Yesterday's Chemicals" http://www.myspace.com/tattsyrup

I was passing Exeter yesterday so I made a little time to pop into Mansons Guitar Shop. I was very impressed. They have a fine selection of basses I'd heard of but not had a chance to try. It wasn't busy as it was Wednesday morning but I was left to try anything there. In the unusual department they had a selection (a selection!) of Zons, a Smith 6 line fretless and 3 Pedullas. In the Fenders there were a couple of CS vintage things (didn't bother) a real 79 P much like the one I have and some Lakland super Ps and super Jazzes. They had a Marcus Miller Jazz and Geddy Lee Jazz too. The Shine "inspired by" a Ric 4001 was also pretty good for cheap money Very nice to strap these things on and give them a go. Nice also to realise I really like what I already have The staff there were very nice and just left me to it. The customers coming in were nice and sociable too and I may have recruited a few for Basschat... Maybe we need a poster for the bass trying area of music shops...
Yup, rubbing your ears on the strings gives a completely different tone to fingers...
Is that "playing by ear"?
Surely that would be the responsibility of whoever provided the flooring, not the band?
I suspect it would be your fault for making them dance and if they trip over and crash into your PA stands and drag a top cab down on top of themselves that's probably your fault too, even if they've drunk 20 pints of special brew ... We use it as a get out of jail free card when people come up with the plainly stupid idea of holding a barn dance in a real working barn .. Doh! But it's good for making sure they shell out for the proper flooring in a tent too. Bear in mind we are "causing" the guests to 'urtle across the floor at break neck speed (Sic) and therefore should have done all we can to make sure our "working area" is safe.
Played at a wedding yesterday; got paid well (good) but as it was outside in a marquee and it was chilly, hardly anyone bothered coming into to watch, dance or even heckle (bad)! Shame really, as we had a great sound, played well and even managed to do a flawless version of 'Live and Let Die' for the first time ever.. We have done some good ones before, but most of the time I find wedding gigs (compared to most others we do) are really, really awful.. Is that true generally or is it just me??
Marquee wedding gigs take a bit of pre-organising in my experience. We have one coming up and we've made it clear to the organiser that they have to make absolutely sure there's a quorum in the tent when we start. Slightly different for us in that we can't do our thing unless there's a good bunch of willing victims to dosey-doh and right hand turn. We have a list of preconditions for marquee gigs though, after a few difficult situations down the years.. If they leak we don't play. We got rained on last summer - inside the tent and had to dodge drips, protect our gear with umbrellas and stuff and then spend an early break gaffa taping the seams and creating rainwater run offs to avoid being electrocuted .. The organisers never think of the problems of loading out in the dark on grass with rabbit holes and guy ropes and no lighting so we alwasy ask for parking right next to the stage area. We also make sure they make sure the neighbours are cool with the noise.. Not ideal, for sure but if you talk to them beforehand about this kind of stuff they have the chance to book someoneelse if your band is not right for the situation... Oh and make ure your Public Liability Insurance covers you for the type of flooring they have. Someone falls on an uneven bit of ground and breaks a leg you could be sued... Sad but true these days..
-
Leave the door open. And drop the odd Larry Graham pop in once you have the gig.
-
Sounds like you really want the gig so just follow it thorugh. When you look back on it in 6 months time the extra work will seem like nothing. And you'll know a few more songs
Same here, and it has led to extensive psychiatric bills over the years
Ha ha Well my parents only saw me play bass once or twice ... They let me practice at home for 3 years, though. That counts as big support in my book... Skillbass: Your English is getting better. Thanks. My advice would be to get lessons. Your tutor will help you identify the areas you need to work on and help you find ways to address those areas. If you have had lessons and the tutor says he can't help you any further as you have exceeded his level of teaching look around for another tutor. There will be someone at a higher level around. If there is not I'd recommend doing piano to grade 4 or 5. Understanding the chordal instruments and music to a reasonable grade will be invaluable in your bass playing career.
Please bother to write in English not text speak. As best you can. Some people on this forum are older than your dad, many have been playing longer than you have been alive, for some English is a second language, they dont do text speak. They all have great advice and knowledge they are happy to share with anyone willing to ask... I include myself the above (not the English as a second language bit tho ) crap I'm old ......
+1 I tried to suggest this earlier. The fact is that if you fail to act on that initial piece of advice - write correctly on this forum - then you display the type of attitude that alienates many of the helpful people on here and you will therfore get less help. Does it matter if you use txt speak? Well, not really. Does it matter if you ignore advice? Yes.

Sorry. It was the thoughts of an old bloke. I'd suggest that if you want to get on in this business it's possibly best to use some archaic concepts such as punctuation, capital letters and full words rather than text speak. But then again I don't arrange sessions so what do I know?
I was thinking the other day (not something I do very often) we all try to get great tone from great basses and great amplification and try to use the best pedals that have true bypass and use certain speaker configurations to get just the sound we want. Then when we have it, it goes through a lead into pa that can be of totally different speaker sizes and through effects that are not true bypass into maybe a one by 12 and a 1 by 15 and a horn when the sound we may like is coming from a 4 by 10 and it never sounds the same out front of the pa as it does coming out of the amp My point is whats the point Do you think I should just give up thinking?
Well don't ya go thinkin', and thinkin', and thinkin' and thinkin' so much 'till you're stranded behind Don't ya go thinkin', and thinkin', and thinkin', and thinkin' so much 'till you're Losin' your mind
