Bassist Required in South Wales Area

You'll have to contact them via the myspace and email, chaps "Last Seen: 10th May 2009 - 05:36 PM " They popped in, posted this and will probably never be seen again on here ... -
I've been playing for over 35 years and have worked in music retail since the early 80s. The instruments now are amazing. My fave for beginners is the Peavey Millennium...unbeatable! I remember buying an HH amp in the 70s only because it lit up!
That gimmick worked for Trace too
Having had a look around (which was a bit difficult becuase not many places seem to stock them) the prices seem to £300+ for the junior versions and £400+ for the big ones. That's at least twice what I'd consider to be a beginners budget.
When they came in first of all (and we went around this loop before) they were £500 for the big boys bass and £450 for the junior (which I think this is) That was soclearly flying in the face of the concept that Flea's website was going on about I got onto them and pointed out the problem. Had af ew back and fro's so maybe they realised how different things are here and changed the price accordingly. BassCenter now has them for £359 and £319 which is now only about £100 over the "concept" price, IMHO. Not tried one so I don'tknow if it plays that much better than a Squire Vibe BassDirect has specials with East preamps..
Damn - just realised that Free were on early in the programme & I'm sure Andy Fraser would have a Gibson - my whole theory is crumbling already. . .
Just a poorly mimed and truncated bit of All Right now from TOTP I think. They all looked bored and as if they'd been told off by their mums. The odd thing is that, although we have a huge amount of choice of instruments these days the vast majority of basses on Jools and the recent Glasto TV coverage etc were Fenders ... and 4 string too.

Got the current BGM now and it's the best for ages IMHO. Well done all, keep up the good work, and listening to our ideas here.

I don't think playing acoustically should limit your scope so try the big floor flillers from here Guarenteed Dancefloor Fillers thread I used to play in a duo and we did River Deep Mountain High and Da Do Ron Ron with a kind of "picket fence of sound" effect replacing Phil Spector's production We also used to do Summertime blues, Somthing Else, Billie Jean (try the Chris Cornell version) Also try I fought the law, Should I stay or Should I go, Pretty vacant ... Have a browse through youtube searching for "acoustic cover" and see what comes up
I +1 for spending all their spare money on picks - one place does them 75p per pick!!
My bro liberated a few from the music store he worked in as a saturday boy at school He gave me a few for Christmas. I've just loaded the last 12 new ones into my three pick holders, 27 years later .....
To be fair, it is essentially a standard Precision as opposed to all of his other Singlecuts and super Jazzes.
ha ha ha ha
why would they write about him now? anyone know? JJ Burnell and the dude from kaiser cheifs have been playing his guitars a while now, haven't they? jons not brought out anything new. perhaps its just a slow week, i mean, the general public dont really care about whos bass is made by who.
You have much to learn about the ways of marketing, Young Jedi. This is a local successful business with international market making a decent living in the toughest recession for decades. Yeah, that's news.
A waiting time of 6 months? That seems a bit different to what i usually hear
Luthier months are like wedding gig minutes ...
Seeing as my comment sparked this thread I'll just say this - Some people who have said boutique basses are worth the money, others would say are brand snobs.
Yup. I'm a brand snob .. I have Shuker, Stagg and SX (and Fender too) all are very good at what they do - for the prices I paid.
Sort of a weird one. We have a manager that sorts all the gigs and that but i find myself naturally running the band on a more day to day basis, making sure everyone knows where and when theyve gotta be places, If they're claiming for any gear etc. Ive only been with these guys about 2 months, maybe a should stop
Wah! Stop now whilst you still have your hair/sanity I do the marketing all the gig sorting and co-ordination and all contact with the punters/bookers before we hit the stage. We usea Yahoo group diary for info re gigs. Then once we kick off on stage I share the front man job with the Melodeon player/caller/lead vox. After we come off stage I get to go and schmooze the punters/bookers/mothers of the bride and groom etc etc. I would say I share leadership of the band with the Melodeon player but we make all big decisions as a band. Works fine and has done for 16 years now.
IME people who are unhappy with their custom-made basses have over-specified them and got too far into the fine details that should be left up to the luthier who ought to have far more experience than you when it comes to knowing what will make the right bass for a given customer. They specify woods, based on examples that may well have been grown in a completely different continent to the stock their luthier is using, and electronics and pickups based on word of mouth and sound clips off the web rather than actual first hand playing experience. As a player pick what you know about. The look, the playability and how you want it to sound. It's up to the luthier to then turn that into the right bass for you, and a good one will be able to guide you in the right direction. You should know what you want the bass to sound like and so the luthier will be able to pick the right woods and pickups that will give you the correct end result. If you want fancy wood finshes remember that there are plenty of different timbers that will give the same look and if for instance you want a flame or quilt top it doesn't have to be maple - there are plenty of other woods which will look the same but may be far more appropriate for the sound of the bass. Don't push your luthier in building an instrument they don't feel comfortable with. There's plenty of luthiers to choose from - over 10 first class ones building basses in the UK alone. Someone will be willing to build what you want, although I think you should decide based on what they've made previously that matches what you want. And once you start looking world-wide (a much easier proposition nowadays) someone somewhere will already be building something that is pretty close to your dream bass.
Absoloutely +1 My error was thinking I wanted something totally diferent in sound to the one he'd already built but I didn't.
Yes, I remember Jeremy Irons touting this back on Wogan back in the day. He was either on a bung or put up to it by triads.
ha ha Do actors play triads?

As I mentioned last time this came up (and to +1 Alex's comment) .. if you think boutique basses are expensive, try saxophones ...
Without electricity all basses are pretty worthless?
Not all ...
Pete raises a good point. what if u order a custom bass and u dont like it? Expecially if u have had input in the build process? BB I love boutique basses cos i am an insufferable snob!
You do what I've just done and sell it. (my "other" shuker) I ordered the wrong thing. It was built exactly to the specs I asked fro but ... I asked for the wrong thing. It's finacially and emotionally painful.
By 'boutique' I was referring to any bass 2K upward, but custom-built counts.
Oh Well that counts me out then Scrub all I've said
I'm with Birdy on this - it's all relative isn't it. And not so much relative to what you earn (it is a factor of course) but what you want, my bike cost 10k which is a hell of a lot more than my bass, my car cost 2k. That says it all really. Personally I think people who want to spend 30k on a car are nuts, but thats based on MY values. All the boutique basses I've laid my hands on have exuded quality and felt great to play. I actually feel embarrassed by that as I think I don't live up to the basses ability, hence I'm going to blend in with a P bass from now on
"Fender CS Pino Palladino" ha ha yeah.. Now if that isn't a boooteek bass I'm a person from Holland
