1. Use Spotify Radio in a genre and era you don't normally play and play along. Save anything you like to a play list. Loads of possibilities Playing with other people- and their choices - is a great way to broaden things and get out of a rut. Go back to your favourite tunes and learn the line of another instrument or the vocals, the backing vocals, or even the drum parts as ghost notes on different strings EG kick on the E, hi hat on the G, etc
 2.
I've put my buckle over the right hip for years now, otherwise when I sit down it digs into my belly. It has the added extra of keeping my basses in good condition!
A very long time ago another "bass player" used to do that too, but over the left hip... I remember it distinctly.
 3.
The principle is the same as this thread demonstrates. I've played with two other bands this year and witnessed the exact same discussions. A pub band and a thrash metal band. The difference in a function band is that you need to look conventionally "smart", but even this leads to arguments as to what is smart. Are polo shirts smart formal wear and acceptable at a wedding?
Ah sorry I really meant that the concept is easier to agree on rather than the details.
 4. i use my paunch That stick on back protector came up in another post yesterday .. Ah Here it is
 5.
Me neither. Even forgetting the weight you lose the floor coupling and boundry reinforcement which you need for smaller combos.
It's a compromise between the better sound that comes from those aspects and being able to hear yourself on stage. I like the PJB idea of upward firing speakers (as well as forward) in some of their combos.

 7.
We've had this discussion endlessly. In the end I persuaded everyone just to buy a smart striped shirt from Next as per their own taste and wear black trousers and shoes. It works at weddings, pubs and hotels. We've worn evening dress on special occasions when asked. We used to wear all the same colour shirt, but things started to get uneasy when people started 'losing' their shirts, and bringing a blue one that they thought was close. We had 5 different shades of blue all in different styles and the drummer insisted on wearing a short sleeve one. All or nothing, no halfway measures, otherwise it looks like you've not made the proper effort as the "Cream suits" shows. We also have screen printed t-shirts with logo. We have them in red and also in black, some in long sleeves, some short sleeves. We wear them to arrive and set up in and occasionally for charity freebies as advertisement. I've also been involved in heated discussions where one member wants to wear them for paid function gigs. Hmmm - no don't get me started.
It's vastly different, and a lot easier, in a functions band though.
 8.
In fact, it is almost impossible not to see a string quartet comprising 4 hotties in some form of 'rocking' attire. I blame Nigel Kennedy.
or Britain's Got Talent
 9.
Yup, Joe is on guitar in it though, actually quoted as saying 'But I need three amps'.
Oh I thought it was a two bass band ....
 10.
ah, yes, but would they wear ripped up denim and metal t-shirts anyway? ok some would...
The Vitamin String Quartet probably do:
 11.
Shame its not a real 62,that would be amazing, they must be out there, wish i could do an american pawn shop tour, there must be loads of cool stuff still about in the backwoods.
Real '62P bass on ebay right now with a few days to go and at £2200 link It's here in Cardiff which is why I'm handcuffed to this cooker ... Once it's been sold my wife has pomised to release me and let me on the internet again...
 12.
not sure, I'll put them on tomorrow and get back to you.
I know the Maplins ones can't do it. Even when its quiet they keep on flashing
 13.
Indeed, I will have to work out a rotor system for the P, J and Stingray. Good times Oh I was out all day today in Swindon :@ will call you tomorrow.
Yeah it's a problem when you have more than one you really like. All Hell Breaks Loose* come Friday so calling before then would be good * School summer holidays
 14.
Since he still isn't about: And between us: +6x12, matamp, and another two 4x12. Edit: Also, Never heard of that Sunn O))) band, have to check them out.
you both play in one band don't you? At the same time? I think I can hear you from our house....
 15.
Was really good, I didn't play with the EQ too much o it sounded the same but it felt more responsive.
Cool You should be able to get oooodles of bass out of that now, specially through your hot amp.
 16. Can you turn the flashing off and have the lights just on ?
 17.
The back of that bass really ain't a good advert for these things. Jon.
Ha ha yeah I thought that too
 18.
I'm the weird-looking one.
Sorry, can you narrow it down a little?

I've always thought ... that the band should look like a cooler version of their audience!
Excellent rule of thumb. Like your audience, but ramped up by a percentage.
Yeah that sums it up well.
 19.
I agree with many of your points - whilst I said image isn't important to me, I know it is to others. Thing is, in the type of venues I'm used to playing in (i.e. London toilet circuit, unpaid gigs and no-one giving a sh*t), I'd much rather please a small amount of audience members who actually got into the music than try to impress the type of people who are more interested in my shoes!
If you are happy with that level of ambition and achievement I'd suggest you do nothing different. In fact if you just play in rehearsal studios you could cut out the travel, the crap venues, the problem promoters and the people who don't give a sh't...

 21. Just in case you were wondering .. the headliners on this gig in the OP (and bringers of the hooooge wall of SVT) were Styx
 22.
Two of our group have no dress sense at all......think accountants.
You mean they wear suits? That can be cool
 23.
I just knew they came from Lapland ..
Or Lapel Land "All your lapel needs in one great store"
 24.
I am listening! And thanks for taking the time to answer me - the advice is definitely being taken on board - believe me.
Great
Yep.. all of that would be fantastic! I think our main aim at present is to try to build up a fan-base that is not entirely composed of friends, relatives and work colleagues!
Then you need to do everything you can to be entertaining. That really is teh bottom line. From your videos you are playing entertaining music in an entertaining way. However right now your front person is carrying the band in the visuals department. That's going to happen anyway but it doesn't have to be all down to her. If you were up the front, smiling and laughing and looking at the audience, essentially sharing the entertainer load, she'd probably let you wear your Blondie tribute black jeans outfit and not be moaning about it so much...
Well, that's a difficult one - I guess the bands I like have a slightly different style from this band I'm in. For example: The Pixies http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/05...0421-pixies.jpg Sonic Youth http://www.highergroundmusic.com/u/shows/3/sonicyouth1.jpg My Bloody Valentine http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/reverb/asse...umb-320x320.jpg
Er... anybody a bit younger?
But this band is decidedly not like that - and I like the band I'm in - I like the music - but I really have no clue what we should look like.... Maybe something like: http://thedrummersguide.files.wordpress.co.../06/blondie.jpg ???
Well the white shirt and thin black tie is a standard rock and roll cliche look, along with "all black" and biker tee shirts and jackets .. Nowt wrong with that unless you get your singer to bleach her hair ... Oh, as you were, I forgot The Pretenders .... Brunette and strat, white shirt and thin tie .... and Patti Smith too Go on, dress up and stand up the front... You know you want to really
