  1. This is my current board based on the Aclam XS1. In order to maximise space I replaced the end cheeks with pieces of right-angle aluminium faced with self-adhesive silicon rubber strip. Underneath is a Thumpinator and the rechargeable battery pack. It is my intention to replace the Sweeper, the Subnup and possibly the Tuner, BDDI and Thumpinator with an HX Stomp. There are however a couple of issues with this. 1. I need to change over from battery power to mains power as the battery pack does not have enough capacity for the HX Stomp. Not a big deal just need some cash. 2. Going from the the Cali76 to the Stomp will mean that the Tuner function is after the compressor which is not recommended. Would it be sensible to put an FX Loop as the first block of The Stomp and run the compressor on that?

  6. Prefer to stand where I can see the kick drum pedal, usually next to the snare/high-hat. This is probably why I have defective hearing and tinnitus.

  8. Yes Slightly different John. In my latter days at Sony Broadcast I was Technical Manager for Exhibitions, a kind of super Roadie. For some months prior to the big trade shows I would meet with the Product Managers and we would decide what we show and how it would be demonstrated. From these discussions a list of equipment and a set of schematics was produced. For the very large show (IBC in Amsterdam) I used to take on two broadcast engineering students from Ravensbourne College in Bromley for the summer months to help. It helped me enormously and gave them an insight into a large manufacturer, the industry, got them to the show and they got paid. Our Logistics people did a great job in allocating all the products required and packing it by area. I should point out that the largest stand we built was 40m x 25m triple decker so the amount of equipment required filled a number of 40-ft artics. It was like building a TV station from scratch in 10 days. I used a team of 4 or 5 installation wiremen and would work closely with the stand builders to get all the inter-area cabling installed. Once we started putting product into the stand the Product Managers and Product Support Engineers would finish connecting up and start commissioning. We liked to keep them away until it was convenient to us for them to be there so they used to attend the Sales Meeting. The afternoon before opening all the sales guys descended on us for hands-on training. For the whole of the build we were in very casual dress but come opening time everyone was there in their suits, regardless of what time we finished the night before. Once it was over we had 3 days to take it all apart put the right kit in the right boxes, store away all the cables and ship everything back. Sorry I've rambled on for too long but happy days.
  9. Since the prostate was whipped out 15 years ago I’ve almost always sat down to gig. Initially it was a tall bar stool but now I use an Eich active drum throne with the kick drum fed into it. A sort of kick up the backside. I certainly feel more comfortable and never had a problem as the keyboard player also sits.

  11. If I had a DOB Fender Precision it would obviously be a fake as I was born 5 years before it was created.
  12. Just found a picture of the inside of it and the input socket is wired directly to a small transformer. I can also see a rectifier and smoothing capacitors so it definitely needs AC. If it came with a 4.8VA adaptor then that should be a minimum requirement. If you find something with a higher rating then that will be fine.
  13. Certain Electro-Harmonix pedals that use valves, English Muff'n and Black Finger Compressor, use 12-volt AC Adaptors. Inside they use a small step-up transformer to generate 300-volts for the valves' anodes so they can work as originally designed. It could well be that your BassMax does something similar. One would need to check the circuit schematic. BTW It is possible to get 13A based 240v AC to 12v AC plug in adaptors.

  15. I was very saddened to read just now on Facebook that Nick finally lost his fight with cancer last night. He was well known to many here as his appetite for basses was insatiable. We met purely by chance when, many years ago, I won a Lakland DJ4 on Ebay. He dropped it round to my house and during the ensuing conversation it materialised that he also frequented this place. We remained friends from then on. My sincere condolences to Alice and his canine companions.
  16. Back in the early 90s, just after I'd picked up the bass again after a long break, a local pub was renovated and re-opened as the Blues Tavern. The new owner/landlord, whose name I forget, was well connected in the music business and had the late Denny Laine living in a motorhome in the carpark. Denny used to run the regular Jam nights and so I got to play with him a few times.

  18. It's interesting how people say they don't initially get on with the HX Stomp. It happened to me 2 years ago and after a few days I returned it but never one to give up easily I've just got another and thoroughly enjoying using it. A quick question, has anyone successfully made a preset that emulates the slap of a double bass?

  20. I've been here since the early days of Bassworld, i.e. about 23 years. There was a time when I would post a lot but nowadays I just like to browse and rarely comment. It was through here that I had the idea to start my cable business as there was a need that wasn't being fulfilled. Making and selling cables showed me that there was life after retirement, kept me busy and I made many friends in the process, so thank you one and all. There is no doubt that no matter what the topic, if you ask, someone will have the answer. Long may it continue.

Some years ago I parted company with my Stingray 5, the one with a Status neck, because I was finding it too difficult to play with my small slightly arthritic hands and it didn't fit the band I was in at the time. I went back to playing 4-string basses yet I keep getting the urge to get a 5-string USA Sterling. Ridiculous really when I know that I won't be able to play it well.
  22. I’ve had a Metro Hybrid PJ for about 10 years and it is still my No.1 bass. Never had a problem with it. Also had a couple of Metro UV70s. Only sold them because I don’t get on with Jazz bodies.
  23. Totally agree. It also depends what the two basses are as the result will be different. For example if both are passive then the tone controls on one will effect the other and vice- versa. It would be best to have complete isolation via a switch of some sort.
  24. The Nano seems pretty clean and very loud. I run it flat and use a Sansamp BDDI in front of it. I have no complaints.
