Dropping like flies. Is anyone coming?
  2. It's fine to run two channels using a Y splitter cord. Some power amps, like QSC have an input selector which routes channel 1 input to both channels. Some have a loop out from each channel so you can daisy cain them together. At the end of the day it will dpend on the input impedance of the power amp. If you parallel too many then you will get a loss in level and frequency response. If you want to run lots of power amps then get an audio distribution amplifier. They split the signal, adjust the level and provide buffered outputs. No need for transformers.
  3. If you ever get the chance read this To quote Mo, "Around 1960 my school band, The Tradewinds, upgraded its back line of little 5 watt amplifiers with the purchase of a wedge-shaped, blue and white, 17 watt, 4-input, Watkins Dominator amplifier which, at £38/10/-, we could just afford between us. But the band was divided by the prospect of such awesome power: did we really need 17 watts?". The Dominator used 2 x EL84. The Vox AC30s used 4 x EL84 to get 30-watts and they are a loud 30-watts.
  4.
Finally got my amp. Some photos (not the best I'm afraid) here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9336149@N08/614729274/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/9336149@N08/614729326/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/9336149@N08/614729780/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/9336149@N08/614729610/ Cosmetically, it's not as bad as I expected. Just really needs a good clean, some sticky residue on front fascia, scuffed corners,..but nothing too major. I haven't yet got a cab, but I wired it up to 15" inside my Trace Elliot 150w combo to test. Crikey, it seems incredibly loud! Lovely warm growl to it, just the sound I've been after, & trying to get with various driver pedals. The bass & treble controls on both channels do actually alter sound quite a bit - variety of different tones possible, from 'dubby' to 'clanky'. However treble boost switch doesn't actually seem to do anything, at least to my ears - no problem. Valves inside are old (dusty) Mullards: 2 x EL34's & 3 x ECC83'S Only thing...is that it has some kind of earth problem. Whereby, hum goes when bridge or anything else earthed on guitar is touched, etc...(?) Also, mains lead & speaker cable are fixed. Was considering putting IEC connector & jack socket on back, along with corner protectors. Though on the other hand; I quite like keeping things original, especially if it is a rarity - not sure yet(?) Thanks Oxblood for all the info - you're a star! Very happy with this find. ^_^
Nice bit of history. Those output valves look like EL84s not EL34s. That would give the amp an output of around 15-17 watts.
There's obviously a cost involved in the venue. Do we need to be sending donations, or will it be sorted out on the day?
I will be collecting the usual £10 from each person on the day. If we get enough people this should cover the cost of hiring the venue and anything over gets donated to charity. I am proposing that this time it goes to the Meningitus Research Foundation. Our local Jam organiser lost his teenage daughter to it a few years ago and he and other musicians do what they can to raise money for research.

  7. Wow. At £950 that is an amazing bargain. Someone buy it please.
I wondered where this thread had gone, didn't realise it was at the top. I will definately be coming and can bring any of my gear should anyone wish although I appreciate it is not of the same quality as the rest of you! Well done Dave for booking it. Regarding the emails I'm not sure that the address is checked that often, when I did my work experience there it wasn't very professional although it is great for what it does. Ive done numerous gigs in the liveroom and I think it sounds pretty good.
Steve told me that they have an email problem so that was the reason for zero response. What a way to run a business eh?

Venue booked. Saturday 18th August 10 am to 6 pm. I guess we now need to start listing who is bringing what. I'll bring Lakland DJ5, Lakland Duck Dunn and Epifani rig plus whatever else takes my fancy.
Come on then, are us "London types" invited or not? If there's parking I can bring Urb with me.
Everyone is invited. The venue is accessed from the Farnham Road Car Park so there is no problem parking - it just costs.

At £10 per head, 10 is the break even point so it looks like its a go. There are still a few other locals who haven't signed up yet - Merton? Walbassist? Wildman? plus some in London expressed an interest. It's a quick 40-minute train ride to Guildford and a 5-minute walk from the station.
  13.
Does anybody use an SWR 6x10 cab? My new band is playing heaver stuff and my 2 Aguilar GS112's were lacking punch and depth at our last gig. The SWR is reasonably compact and at low shop volumes seems to sound good. What is it like at gig volume? Any help gratefully received before I part with any cash.
I had one and it was great but my back didn't like it. Very loud, very punchy.

It's starting to look like the 18th but what happened to all those who were so keen for this to happen? Looking at the current numbers it is either not financially viable or we just do it beween 14:00 and 18:00. If the dates don't appeal then we could move it to October, November, December or later, or just forget about it.
  15.
If you had the choice between a P bass OR a jazz for playing covers (70' to present day), which would it be and why? (I'm thinking Lakland DJ or Bob Glaud) A
Don't forget the Lakland Duck Dunn.
  16. Until you can get someone to do it properly for you why not use some electrical terminal strip. The type with screw terminals. Do them up nice and tight. I was at a meeting near to your work place yesterday. No doubt I will be back again within the next month. If you can hang on til then I'll bring my iron with me and do it for you.
  17.
It's such a huge sound with the preamp that I can pretty much get any tone I want out of it!
The DJ5 with J-Retro is amazing.

Today I visited backline Rehearsal Rooms at Guildford Station to have a look and discuss. It's a bit tacky but I'm sure that our bass gear will brighten it up. Thier live room should more than adequate. It's about 7m x 5m plus a good size stage. On a Saturday they rent out in 4-hour slots so we could have 10:00 -18:00. I'm prepared to underwrite the cost but we need a minimum of 10 attendees. Possible dates are: Saturday 11th August Saturday 18th August Please state your preferred date and your committment to come. You know you want it to happen.
  19. It has to be a Bongo 5-string which was dead on arrival from the USA - the rear pick-up was open-circuit. I'd ordered and bought it from a US dealer in order to save some money so there was no-one to send it back to and I wasn't going to send it back to the USA to have it fixed. After posting on the EBMM forum and exchanging pms and emails they eventually sent me a replacement which I installed. I then had to send the old one back. They never did refund my postage. Finally it was so out of alignment I had to pay to have it set-up by my local luthier. After that it was fine bass and is possibly still in the BT fraternity
  20. I would say put it down to one of those nights. I've had probelms with wooden stages but it's easier to cut the bass back rather than try and find something that may not be there. For ease I put castors on a Trace 4x10 years ago. It sounded dreadful. It just lost everything so I took them off again. Could well be the same effect with your rubber feet. I keep my rigs on wheeled trolleys in the garage and they all sound thin but take them out and put them on the floor, even outdoors and they are normal. Yesterday I played a local festival using the house Trace rig, a 1x15 combo and a 2x10 cab. It sounded aweful standing directly in front of it. The 15-inch seemed to fart down at G and F on the E-string and it was so clanky. I was in two minds whether to use my own or risk it. A number of the other bands used the house rig and it sounded great out front so I left mine in the car and went for it. Still sounded weird on stage but good result where it mattered.
  21.
Yeah, just be nice if they could though. Schroeder manage it ok.
Unfortunately that's the realities of the commercial world. Next you'll be wanting to buy directly for Fender, Gibson, EBMM, Warwick, Ampeg, Ashdown, EBS, Boss, Electro Harmonix, Line 6, etc., etc. If you could then their overheads would be so great that the prices would go up dramatically to cover the costs and you would save nothing. A small company like Schroeder can probably afford to do it at the moment but once they get larger and have a dealer network it will it will certainly stop.
  22.
I've got the Sennheiser 172 also (not the G2 but the older model). It's exceptional in my opinion, apart from the rubbish instrument lead that is supplied with it.
Having made you a new lead I thought I'd better make myself a new one with a view to using my 172 at Loxwood Beer Festival today however trying out my 172 system I found that it is no a patch on a direct cable. I'm not sure how to describe it but with a cable the bass is crystal clear but with the 172 it's just .... If it were an optical system I would say it was out of focus. It's put me right off using it again. Maybe faulty I'll have to see who Senheisser recommend to service them.
  23.
The cab is sooo huge it has it's own gravity.. I just couldn't resist the pull of the UL-610. It's a little monster!
I have just turned a Kermit shade of green. It does raise the question as to what is wrong with your existing rig?
  24.
am i wrong then in thinking i could just get a stereo 1/4" jack and a stero cable with a 1/4" stereo plug on the end to connect it all together?
Don't waste money on a stereo cable. What you need is a balanced (screened twisted pair, same as mic cable) with Ring/Tip/Sleeve jacks on either end.
  25.
How about this? http://www.behringer.com/AB200/index.cfm?lang=eng I can't quite work out if it will do the switching job Dave can you translate the spec int yes or no?
Funny you should mention that Si. I was looking at it earlier. I'm certain it would do the job however it would be a bit of a bodge on the cabling side. I think John said he wanted a single ring/tip/sleeve jack cable to plug into the footswitch. There's no way you could do that with this as the two switching elements are completely isolated from one another.
