I am embarrassed to admit that I have never played a Ray or one of its derivatives/copies I do, however, have a pretty strong idea in my head of how I think they sound. I find them limited and unsubtle, but in a good way, if that makes sense? "That" sound is immense - powerful but somehow weedy at the same time.... how does that work?!? Loads of treble and loads of bass, but scooped. On the other hand, some players make them a phat mid-fest. I really have no idea what I am trying to say here.
Cool story bro. Seriously though, I don't think they are scooped at all. I think they are... er... hilly... like scooped but there's a secondary mid hump layer to the tone too... almost vowel sounding at times.
That's daft. You want one, get one. You're probably a better player than you think you are.
This might sound strange but.... when I got my 'ray it actually upped my game a little. I upgraded from a SUB, immediately I discovered that the 'ray neck was exactly right for me and I was able to play longer and faster with less fatigue. Secondly that fretty roll that 'rays have can accentuate any fluffs or lazy technique, playing the 'ray made me notice them more and forced me to improve my technique.

Don't oil it before applying your Rustins as it will knacker it for applying any coating. Besides it will end up looking just the same without it. You probably won't need to dye it either as the coating should deepen the colour anyway. If you want to test it first use the area just behind the nut.

Now this is what you call a comprehensive advert.

Nothing seems to fit on it properly.
Yes, first one has it definitely, second one less so
I chose that first one because that's pretty much exactly how my 'ray sounds. The Sterling one threw me a bit as to me it really sounds like a 'ray... I wonder if it had had some modifications done? Not having played one I don't know how close to 'rays they are. I didn't think it would be that close.
Your leg scaffolding was surely worth 50 points before you even played a note
Haha aye, maybe I should keep it for when the semi's come round. -

It's either mint or it's not.

Here's me the other night at a botb (at my age, really ) ... the prize is £2000 so it's worth the effort* Forty minute set - the longest I've stood up for since my achillese tendon op 4 weeks ago - admittedly I had to perch on a stool for a song in the middle of the set. See my crutches hanging off the stage bottom right. For those who have met her, yes that's Betty (second bass I ever built). My main basses are setup and strung for CGCF... which is a little gruff for this new band. Betty's doing fine though and her new QP barks like a good'un. *We notched up one of the highest scores in the comp so far and have been bumped straight through to the semi's without the "indignity" of more heats. -
Fender Jazz Bass Fretless / home-made relic job
Ou7shined replied to BassPimp66's topic in Bass Guitars
I agree the hardware and the body finish do not really match . But, thus far everything is reversible. I can always throw a new bridge/pot plate and tunigs pegs, and the bass is back to new. I'm not tempted to do something irreversible on the varnish or the neck... coz, if it fails, I AM SCREWED.
Good call. -
I sometimes get the feeling that some of the prolific traders use this area to create a little hype over an item shortly before selling it too. I mean post a bog standard Fender, 4 or 5 guys come on and say "that's awesome" etc. owner agrees then lo and behold it's on the market again before you can blink. Is this a bad thing?... it's not evil I suppose, just a bit rum.

Fender Jazz Bass Fretless / home-made relic job

Now I've seen the pics, what you have done seems to have gone to plan and been done well. However the problem is that the ensemble doesn't quite look right. You've got some ancient looking hardware (I have an '80 G&L with fresher looking hardware) on a spanking new bass. IMHO this odd disparity knackers it's looks. Rather than give it the appearers of long time usage, it makes it look like something has gone wrong in it's short life... flood damage or something, you know what I mean. 2 possibilities lay ahead. Chalk it up and replace the aged hardware with new, this will be relatively inexpensive and will allow the bass to retain it's original value. I'm guessing however that personal taste (and perhaps a tinge of pride ) may steer you away from this route. Second choice, continue with the ageing process and extend it to the wood finish too. You might get lucky and end up with a beautifully complete relic project... or as happens in the majority of cases it could go horribly wrong, look like shyte and considerably devalue it. Look up similar projects and try and recreate the best ones - Bravewood for example. -
At €1700 you would expect a certain degree of 'seriousity' from seller. Ofcourse I saw pictures, but honestly I reasoned that if one owns a €1700 hand built instrument, one does care/know what it looks like. And certainly what state the truss rod is in.
I have, over time learned that we seem to have varying degrees of condition in mind when using the word "mint" or othe such superlatives (oftentimes spelling, punctuation and grammar in a For Sale thread are a good indication of where on the scale this might be... perhaps not as useful a tip for non-English speaking buyers) but an instrument at this price level described as mint should without doubt be in show-room condition.... perhaps better.
