In my current band I had been writing some tunes and vocal melodies then started singing them to help the female singer who isn't always at rehearsals. I have a high range but because I haven't tried singing for about 10 years my voice tires very quickly and is difficult to sustain repeated takes of a tune whilst filling in on vocals at practises nevermind playing bass at same time.
After being left disappointed and poorer after forking out for a local luthier to give a few a setup which wasn't to my liking I now set up my own basses. Still not perfect but doesn't cost me anything to give them a tweak now and then.

Cool story! Brought a smile on my face.
The kids as well as my ex now gather around me and ask for money, and it's all your fault!

I'm interested in what you mean by the taste for it dropped.

Basically, the fashion for fretless has waned. Not as prominent in music as once was. Time to bring it back?
I played fretless exclusively for about 7 years but as the taste for it dropped do did my need for it and I haven't owned one for some time. However the band I play in just got a new guitarist who just happens to own a Wal mk1 lined fretless and he brought it along for me to play a few days ago.
Absolutely loved it. Was funny seeing everyone's reaction as I took to it again like riding a bicycle. No one in the band had heard me playing fretless before and couldn't believe the singing notes etc.
Happy playing fretted with flats for the moment though. Only slight GAS.....:-)
These pics are giving me flashbacks to my first fretless, a brand new black Thunder 1A. Sold it to fund a fretless Steinberger L2 but I have to admit I always thought the Westone was the better fretless.
Enjoy the bass fellas.
If giving the bass a make-over makes you fall in love with it all over again then go for it! Nothing feels as good as having a connection with an instrument.
