Personally I struggle with the vintage thing - it's such an insubstantial quantity. I really liked the '74 precision I had, but if I were to realistically weigh up it's advantages over my CIJ P bass I just couldn't justify the extra cost in any measurable way so I decided to sell it. There is always a factor for "mojo". That extra special something you just can't put your finger on. But if I can't put my finger on it...is it really there? and is it worth a lot more cash? Particularly with the later Stingrays/Sterlings I like the easy to use battery compartment & truss rod adjuster, another plus is that they don't tend to weigh 11lbs like a lot of the much older rays. On the other side of the coin though - I think too much choice is also a killer, and having less basses always leaves me feeling better (as long as I can achieve a few decent sounds I like) so maybe keeping it simple with something like a really killer 'ray would be a simple solution. As you say it will only appreciate in value in the long run so as long as it's at a good price now then you can't really lose if you decide its not for you... So in summary... God knows, it's tough isn't it! my only good advice is follow your heart, not your head.

It's a weird thing isn't it - you almost want something just "because" but every time you get it, it isn't quite what you wanted it to be. I've been having the same love affair with 'rays and every time I end up with another one (hoping it would have the elusive "something" that the others missed) I soon found out it wasn't really the right thing and ended up getting rid of it. I was utterly sure for a long while that my problem would be cured with an older natural/rosewood 2EQ stingray. When I finally got one it wasn't the one I was looking for... Settled on my Sterling HH for now (but for how long) Best of luck with the sale Chris, its an amazing looking bass. If I was in the grip of my bi-annual 'ray-gas you'd have a PM by now I don't suppose it's got "The One" written on the back somewhere? J

I've got very limited experience of using pedals myself but I always come to the same conclusion as you have. I'm not sure if it's just that I don't fully understand how best to utilise the pedals, or that I love the straight sound of a bass without any tinkering. I'm sure that compression etc has a great part to play, I can only guess that the fact that I play zero slap means I might never need it. Even when I try distortion I just cant seem to get on with the sound, it always seems to take the "bass" element away. I find I prefer to play harder and softer or with a bass setup a certain way (like a nice low action on my fretless) to get certain sounds. Maybe I just need educating...

Agreed with previous comments - bridge is wrong, logo is wrong, trussrod is wrong. Bridge suggests it's an OLP bass but the pickup looks wrong as neepheid has correctly pointed out. Stay away imo J
Hey the cat is actually ignoring the bass cabs, i have three cats and its their job to try and rip my accugroove cabs to shreds, i love em though
Bizzarre eh? I always assumed they would have a right old shred party with those cabs, but they've never touched 'em. Thats what I call respect J

Common as muck that Markbass stuff - a truly easy rig to transport though, one cab is all I ever need for rehearsals

I think I might have to vow to never go to B&Q again - I even tried to phone ahead this time to check they had what I wanted, but got no answer so I drove there anyway and guess what...grrr. Popped down to a local cabinet makers this morning who just cut me off a handful of super fine steel wool. Job done. Worked a treat after a little elbow grease. Thanks again for the advice
Just use a small wad of the finest grade steel wool. That should get rid of most light marks, then a drop or three of you choice of oil (I use almond oil). Only precaution is to put masking tape completely over the pickups first, so that steel dust doesn't get into them.
Thanks for that, exactly the sort of info I needed - just checked B&Q website and they sell a fine grade 0000 steel wool so I'll use that and I've got some EB wonder wipes I use to keep fingerboards oiled up and a bottle of lemon oil somewhere as well. Now I have to go wander around B&Q for 2 hours looking for steel wool.... J
You've got a sequoia gold sterling???!!!! I'd give my left testicle for that! Sod it... i'd give both my testicles for that!
I do indeed, and it's a lovely thing - but I'm not sure testicles was the sort of payment I had in mind if I sell it
It's RUINED!!! Sell it to me.
£10 yea? Sorry Michael, can't bring myself to part with it just yet! I'm very likely to sell my Sterling soon though - between Tony and the CIJ I seem to have found all I ever needed hmm...am I starting to sound like Chris? Better keep an eye on the for sale forum after all...

Hiya, I've been listening to some stuff lately thats prompted me to put the TI jazz flats back onto my Tony Franklin fretless precision (and chuck the DR's back onto my 70's RI - will I ever make my mind up!) There is some slight marking from the rounds on the ebony fingerboard though, nothing that affects playability or sound of course but from a purely cosmetic point of view I thought whilst I have the strings off to adjust the neck maybe I could clean it up. I guess serious cleaning up means using some sort of wood plane - I'm hoping maybe someone can advise if low grade wet/dry or wire wool or something would remove surface markings? Any suggestions welcome as I'm itching to get on with this - probably tonight Cheers J

I had one not all that long ago - it was certainly nice and had a unique sort of tone, but still very much a stingray. To be honest I think in a live situation all those nuances would be lost on most ears though. They tend to weigh in a little heavier than the average as well, plus you have to bear in mind that they are string-thru bridge only as well (may be a factor depending on what strings you intend to use). On the other hand though if you dont already own another sort of stingray and you can get a good deal on one, go for it

Take heed of the good advice here whilst you are getting early warning signs. I'm still on the recovery from the starting signs of RSI in both my hands and a similar problem with my right shoulder. It's seriously frustrating to be forcing yourself to take time out to recover. As it turns out I believe my problems were mainly related to the setup of my motorbike, but playing bass and using computers all day just became extra factors that aggravated things to the point where I've had to take time off work and seriously evaluate how I play the bass, use computers and ride my bike. Particularly I always played too hard - so have lowered my action a lot and been working on very light right and left hand technique and I'm finding it a lot less strenuous on my hands. Don't push on through any pain, get it sorted now before you do any damage. Gotta look after number 1 as they say
Just had a reply 'hello, I'm in Menstrie,Clackmannanshire about 40 miles from Edinburgh. You can come and collect it anytime.Alternatively I can post it to your address, send me your zip for a postage quote. Regards, Anna' I dont know whether this makes it anymore genuine or not, but it worries me how none of my questions where answered, that said, we now have a Scottish town and a offer to collect whenever i want, shame Scotland is a bit of a jog from Huddersfield without a car.
To add weight that it's a likely scam I got this reply on the 15th Oct... hello, I'm in Menstrie,Clackmannanshire about 40 miles from Edinburgh.Sure, you can come and collect the guitar.Alternatively I can post it to your address. Regards, Aurelia Changed name over the last few days as well eh, slightly odd

Glad to hear you survived that one - very nasty. I wired an inline RCD into my extention lead that I use all the time so I can't get complacent about it. Always easy to let things like that slip until something like this happens. Hope your recovery is swift J
