Thinking about selling on my Phil Jones briefcase. Need cash to fund a bigger amp. Just wanted to see if there was any interest in this first, before deciding if this is what will have to be sold!! Excellent condition. One tiny knick on the top corner, other than that, it looks brand new. Pictures can be supplied if needed, but it does look like any other Phil Jones Briefcase. Would want £280. Anyone be interested?
Interested - will look into it a bit more... J

String height / action - I've learned a valuable lesson!
Legion replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
To some degree I learnt the same lesson when I setup my double bass. I spent 3 goes making bridges that gave me the action I wanted at the same time as a decent sound that projected well without totally killing my left hand. I realised pretty quickly that the higher the action the better the tone, but it was getting a balance of tone and that jazzy buzz on the fingerboard that proved tough. I guess it goes to show that regardless of all the tips and methods that pro's advocate you were probably on the right track already - with an action and playing style that suited you quite naturally. I also tried to "improve" my playing by being lighter and having a lower action, but for me expression often includes digging in, which you need to have room for... Thanks for reminding me Micheal, I'm off to raise my action a bit! -
I think they are worth the money. All of the high end basses I have owned have been exceptional quality instruments and I am not sure why I sold half of them. How expensive something in depends on your income and outgoings ultimately. If you are unempleyed then £500 is a lot of money to spend on a bass whereas if you have a top job in the city you could maybe earn the £3500 for a Fodera in a week or two. Bass is my main hobby and I pay for all my gear from gigging so if I drop £3500 on a bass so what as long as I want it and don't go into debt. If I was into speedboats or motorbikes etc I would spend way more money. Certainly cheaper basses can get the job done very well but you do generally get what you pay for.
I'm with Birdy on this - it's all relative isn't it. And not so much relative to what you earn (it is a factor of course) but what you want, my bike cost 10k which is a hell of a lot more than my bass, my car cost 2k. That says it all really. Personally I think people who want to spend 30k on a car are nuts, but thats based on MY values. All the boutique basses I've laid my hands on have exuded quality and felt great to play. I actually feel embarrassed by that as I think I don't live up to the basses ability, hence I'm going to blend in with a P bass from now on
-
Peter, as you probably gathered from our long conversation the other week I'd definitely say "yes". I think it depends on what you actually want out of it though, if you want to be a collector then its great. Personally I never intended to be a collector and buying basses ended up being a substitute for playing during a period where I was not in a band. I've always wanted to be a player though, and if thats your goal I'd suggest that too many basses is a distraction from what you are trying to achieve; bonding with an instrument and learning to express yourself on it. Sure we all appreciate that different basses have different sounds and characteristics but how many do you realistically need? I've gone full circle and settled on the P Bass thing, writing original material I just want something simple thats a joy to play. Playing in a covers/function band I would probably prefer something more versatile (unless it was blues:P) Can you be both though? Not sure about that one, doesn't seem to work for me however
Wa sit the one on eBay by any chance?
It was yea, although I didn't realise you had posted about it previously. It was only a 90 minute drive so I went to check it out. You know the rest
It's just a P-bass. Nothing special barring it being a CS variant.
Play what makes you happy.
Oh yes a little bit more than a Pino. You gotta love a wife who asks "would it be a good investment?" and then says "you should get it". I bought it 'cos it's just awesome, the investment side keeps the wife happy. Win/win (Unless you're talking about the Pino of course)
And if he is talking about the Pino - don't worry I got it second hand at a very good price ps gorgeous '63 P
im aching for one of these myself!!
I'd never considered one before now - if you get a chance to try one out I'd highly recommend it.
That is VERY nice...!
It will just have to tide me over until you retire and sell those P basses
Looks sweet. I have an early eighties Squier Jazz in that colour. Looks awesome under certain stage lights.
I'm really looking forwards to out next gig - hopefully I'll get a photo or 2 of the gig to see how cool this looks on stage

Well, I have to say this one sneaked out from a dark corner and whacked me over the head with its clubby neck. I would never have imagined I would find exactly what I was looking for right now in a bass thats almost pink, it's relic'd and its a Custom Shop. Those are 3 things I really didn't rate... It speaks to me, inspires me, and I've fallen for it in a big way. Never believed in all that relic lark but this just feels "played" - a very strange experience to know within a couple of notes (unplugged) that its the one you wanted. Pino Palladino's original basses that these are based on must be a hell of a thing. Also rolls in at a nice light 8lbs 4oz. Did I mention the colour? I think it's growing on me

Having recently swapped my DB cabs back to GS's this Aguilar Chocolate Thunder headcase is surplus to requirements. They are £100 new and this one is mint apart from some damage to the screw threads on the strip of rack mount - dont know why as they were the screws supplied with it and somehow they seemed really tight when fitted. It still holds the head in OK, but you could always chuck a new bit of mounting strip in there or tap the holes out to a bigger screw size. Or use it like it is, like I did £55 posted

Peter, My tactic is to outbass the keyboard player so I like to try and lay a big deep foundation underneath everything. The "cutting through" thing never seems to work quite right for me! Obviously why I've settled on P basses at last. Won't rehearse with the GS cabs until Wednesday but playing around at the moment I still love the sound of them, and I don't have to worry about killing the guitarist for damaging these.... Glad you are liking the DB's J
What is apparent is that they are significantly different. I managed to crank the DB's up at home to quite high levels without everything in the room resonating in sympathy!Played at band practice tonight. More mids definitely and I like the way they insidiously penetrate the mix without getting extremely bassey. If you slap a lot I suspect the GS's will be your friend. Not a huge difference and I'm sure that EQing will level it even more but I'm very pleased. I hope Jas is too but he's owned GS's before so he knows what he's got anyway. Aggy 112's, they're all good. Peter
Update one this - I had some interest about the "other types" of cabs but have decided its either Aguilar GS stuff or nothing. I can't afford to be upgrading to Bergs right now, I need to generate cash not spend even more So if you are the proud owner of a GS112 & GS112NT here's a chance to swap out to some retro DB's. If I don't get any takers for that I'll probably end up selling. *sniffle* Oh, or chaning my mind lol (always an option!)
So you prefer the GS cabs then? Is it a rear vs front port thing?
Long story short... We were going to move house It was a dream place, couple of acres but a small cottage Needed something aesthetically nice as it would be stored in the living room House thing fell through (gutted) Band getting more gigs and travelling further Cabs will get trashed on the road as evidenced by the guitarists efforts to break my stuff Monday night So I just want some basic sturdy 112's and I loved the GS ones, I love these DB's but they are too nice to destroy There my stupid loss by buying something really nice that I didnt really need (deja vu anyone?)

Initially this is a for trade post but might turn into a for sale post if it does'nt work out. Blimey, I just wrote a long story about why I'm doing this but decided its not really important so scrap that! I can elaborate if you really want to be bored. Awesome cabs, great sound, lovely retro look in Chocolate Thunder. One with tweeter and one without, the tweeter one has a scuff in the tolex on top (covered by the head anyway) caused by my band (grrr..no comment). Both have the fitted covers and are in perfect working order. I'll also chuck in the Aguilar Chocolate thunder headcase! I'm looking to trade them for a pair of similar 112's - Aguilar GS preferred, will consider other things and willing to add funds if you've got Bergs to trade (unlikely I know). As seen here...
