1.
Hi you got the box and manual too?
Fraid not, it was just the pedal - although I'm not sure there would be much a manual could tell you if you get my drift
2. Only just bought this from Mike ( cheers mate! ) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=10960&hl= erm...but embarrassingly realised that I can't really get anything much more out of it than I was already getting with my Zoom Ultra Fuzz. Its a great little pedal and in very cood condition, just unecessary to me at the moment. Would just like to recover my £20 and pass it on to a deserving Basschatter, if anyone is is interested let me know. Jas
3. +6 =1212
4. I don't know if its the same thing but my old Trace Elliot combo used to do that. As far as I remember it didnt do it new but at some point it just started making a loud pop when switching it on. Looking into it I was told that there is some sort of "soft start" circuit that often fails. I guess its purpose is to limit the supply to the speaker until the output circuit has stabilised. Maybe the problem is along those lines? J
5. I already have one of these but I gather that they are not always easy to come by... 6. Other than the actual box do you still have the Gearbox software and manuals etc? If you do then consider it sold is paypal ok? J
7.
Thanks for your ideas. Another thing while we're on this subject, if I take a simple melody that is based on a major scale (e.g. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - no, I'm not taking the piss!), I can more or less play it straight off. I really struggle when we're going outside of an octave range. Can anyone suggest practice approaches for hitting the right notes over relatively large intervals? Cheers.
I'm far from qualified to comment on anything except my own limited experiences but I would like to ask; how did you learn the scales that you do know? I found that there were 2 ways for me to approach scales. One was on a sort of visual level as a "pattern" which is very fast and easy, but hugely restrictive as once I start to move higher up or throw open strings in I get totally lost. The other is to approach them from a musical theory angle, where I essentially reconstruct a scale by playing the notes anywhere I want rather than in the exact "shape" that I was used to. It seems better to understand that scales are essentially about the relationship bewteen the notes, rather than the notes themselves. Creating a map of patterns is a hard habit to break - but I think its worth spending time practicing ( and revisiting ) your foundations. I'm still working on this of course hope that helps with a different perspective Jas
8.
I was going for the keep them both option
Unfortunately I got an offer I just couldn't turn down ...erm even though I did sort of start the negotiations off. I can't deny that the 30th was better than my '89 ray - but was it £600 better? I just had to make the most of the fact that I got it by taking advantage of the very decent exchange rate while I was in the USA. To be honest I bought it knowing full well that it would not lose me money if I sold it so it's worked out really well. Mind you, each time I read another "my 30th rocks" post on the EB website it makes me wince a bit and wonder if I'll regret it down the line So the '89 ray stays and I've managed to get my boss to bring me a Tony Franklin fretless from his recent trip which was a bonus ( sometimes hard work must actually pay off! ) Jas
9. Thanks for the comments guys, nice to know the look isn't a bad one It's a 1989, Serial number 29264 - Confirmed by EB as "November 3, 1989 Blueburst, poplar body, shipped to the UK" I'm stuck on if I should keep this OR my 30th Stingray - erm.. or both ! I'm leaning strongly on both right now. Have a good new years all... J
10. In a moment of impulse I bought this one some time ago from a chap in Glasgow via Gumtree - I was really disappointed when it arrived, the strings had gone green and so had most of the frets. The worst of it was that the original Blueburst paint had somehow "gone off" like it had been exposed to moisture and the hardener had broken down, leaving it clammy to the touch and easy to scratch off with your nail. I could still see the beauty of the neck however so I held out some hope it would all come good in the end... So off it went for a respray by Mike at the Bass Merchant whilst I got busy polishing up the remaining bits and bobs. I'm really really pleased with the end result and after playing about with it for a few months now I thought I'd post a picture to inspire a little hope for the Stingray fans out there Jas
11.
If its the one in Bristol thats been posted here, it has a big nick in the back of the neck right where its annoying, and I don't think the scratchplate is an original, its 1 ply and has holes in the don't correspond to the ones in the bass if it wasn't for those I'd have offered the guy £250 for it having played it.This was an E one.
Thats the one, didnt realise it had been posted up here ( and I do watch for precisions quite sharply ). I got him to send me a closeup of the neck and its a brutal looking ding, but ultimately repairable I imagine. An all original '77 P has come up near me now anyway so I think I might be going to take a look at that first... Thanks for the comments guys J
12. Hi guys, Have located a fairly nice 1984 Japanese Precision bass for £300 but have no experience of them myself - I realise that all basses are not created equal but any experiences of whether or not it could be worth pursuing would be really helpful. It looks great but is a fair old distance if I want to try before I buy. Was this a good era for Jap P basses or a low point? just that sort of advice really... Thanks Jas
13. It's late 80's if I recall, and I still have the thing in the loft!
14. Just popped some of my 'rays on the highly inaccurate bathroom scales to try put some figures down. '87 2 band - always felt light, weighs in at 8lbs '89 3 band - middle sort of weight at about 9lbs '91 3 band - on the heavy side at nearly 10lbs 30th anniversary - ouch, weighing in at closer to 11lbs I guess you can't be sure as every bass they knock out is unique, I've read of LE2007 basses weighing in at 8lbs and ones at closer to 11lbs. So I wouldnt worry about the era of production, just find one you like Jas
15. Been a long time but this is still sitting unused, final bump
16.
Are you sure? Unless I'm mad, it does... Chris
Very sure Chris - I'm looking at it right now and it will only take thru body stringing, the back plate is solid with only the intonation adjustment screws there. Thats sort of what confused me in the first place as you had said something along the lines of " if you want that old skool thump, put the original bridge back on and use flats" which contradicted the other statement of "I wouldnt advise using flats thru-body" seeing as I realised with the old bridge I HAD to string thru-body. I may have misunderstood somewhere along the lines, like I say it had been a long tiring week followed by a day of roasting in the sun - all leaving me feeling rather frazzled I have thought about getting a replacement bridge where I dont need to go thru body, although I'll need to make sure it's the right one of course.
17.
Mate, I thought I told you all of the above when you bought that lovely Precision from me Don't you trust me! Over and above the points above; one thing to remember with through body stringing is that you can't subsequently use those strings in any other way. If you fork out £35 on a set of LaBella's, you're going to be mighty p*ss*d when you realise either that you preferred the sound and playability when they were strung from the bridge as opposed to through body (as I do), or if you want to use them on another bass. Chris
Chris, that was a long old day mate... a holiday on the Isle of Wight with a 4 year old takes its toll on my endurance:) I do remember you saying that and just posted here to get other peoples experiences of the same thing. It's actually working great with the TI's, just not the giant Roto's I tried. I would have considered stringing it bridge only but of course the original P bridge doesnt have any holes at the back, only for thru-body. So had to try that with the badass, but even more sustain wasnt really what I was after. Have to say I can't put this bass down anymore, just keeps calling me back!
18.
Just dropped it off at the shop and having had another listen in the peace and quiet there I suddenly realised that maybe I've done exactly what I was expecting - maybe the core to the E string has broken having been strung thru-body. Will have to see what he finds when I pick up in a week or two.
Forgot to follow up on this one. The result was an interesting find, strings survived no problem but as they were heavy gauge the E string in particular was fairly inflexible. Because of the through body stringing the E string was actually creating its own little radius over the saddle ( as it could not be forced to a bend of that small a radius ) and therefore not making full contact with the saddle as it should. I didnt notice this as it was only just resting above the groove in the saddle, and not sitting in it tightly. This was causing the horrible vibration noise I was hearing... Seems a lot was to do with the strings because I put the old Precision string-through bridge back on instead of the badass and put my TI flats on through-body and its working lovely. Phew that seems a complicated explanation...sorry J
19. Bump: not just a feeler anymore...
20.
Went for £1000 in the end - i was following this one, only out of curiosity... Quite fancy getting a bass that is the same age as me - is that daft?
Not daft at all, in fact I've been suffering from exactly the same urge luckily I'm not too old or that could be a really pricey dream if you were born in the 60's eh! J
21. PM's replied to... I still have this lovely Stingray, but have been seriously short of time lately so it's not really had much playtime yet. Open to ideas but may still keep hold of it if I can't tempt myself into something else. Although bearing in mind my imminent USA trip I'd probably be most seduced by cash... J
22. Awesome information there thanks! NYC is looking like prime location after I ran a google map search on manhattan island for guitar shops, and thought "ok thats enough to keep me busy for about a week"
If you go to NYC here's the list I made and forgot to take with me (comments not mine): NY Guitar & Bass Boutique and the Avella Coppollo Shop, 746 9th ave. 212-399-3414 nr subway lines 1, 9, C, F etc
23. Thanks for the advice, its looking like it will be guitar centre after all then ( although there is a Sam Ash fairly close to my end destination as well ) hmmm maybe 2 basses... Oh, and don't forget to buy a nice battered flight case to go with your new purchase Wouldn't want anyone thinking you might be bringing a brand new bass back through customs, as that would attract interest from the excise people (Or Vat people. Or customs people. Whoever.) Mark.
Thats a good reminder thanks, I was thinking about my old hard cases but of course they would be utterly destroyed so I better find something soon J
