  1. Thanks @JPJ - the cavity cover was already done but I have now shielded the rebate too. I wasn't sure whether the two were supposed to come into contact. Advice regarding shielding for the pickups was that this wasn't necessary but I'll ask the Tech's advice on this when he checks the wiring over. "soldering a wire between the shielding and the earth terminal of the output jack." - is this the same as connecting to the bridge?
  2. Agreed...I suppose it's the kid in all of us that wants to see the pictures rather than read the boring stuff. Here we go: Ain't they pretty?? Dean Markley Alchemy strings. Waiting on the gold string retainer. Gotoh Reverse Gold Tuners. Apparently puts less strain of the string - could well be snake oil though. Carrying on the Gold theme - neck plate. Ki0gon wiring loom Those pretty strings again, along with DiMarzio pickups. Chimike sent me a PJ set of sealed Nanyo but I couldn't get them out of the cases and into the cream covers. Note the cream theme (that rhymes!!). Wilkinson bridge in Gold (surprise, surprise) and cream knobs (lots available if anybody needs anything similar). As it stands - need to get the electronics checked by my Tech (can't trust an idiot like me). Finished with several coats of Lemon oil.
  3. I think 30-40 years ago the difference in quality between a £50 and £5000 bass was huge - today? Not so much. I think that most basses in the mid hundreds is good enough for the needs of most of us - except @Happy Jack of course who has empirical evidence to prove it.
  4. Paint me down - Spandau Ballet
  5. EBS Multicomp - I use one of these and I'm really pleased with it. I'm surprised that it doesn't get more recommendations but that seems to be the case with lots of the EBS stuff - including the amps - very under-rated in my opinion. I agree with @Osiris regarding the Zoom B1 - many trick pony and available used for so little you can buy two - one for home use, one for outdoors - for not very much.
  6. Waiting for a Train - Flash and the Pan.

  10. So which of the Beatles is this?
  11. I have the Squier version of this - nice basses - unfortunately these are completely unappreciated in The States because it isn't a P or J - ridiculous.

  16. Resurrecting this thread - there are a lot of good basses around currently and you get a lot of bass for your money with all of them but I maintain that this is one of the best basses you are going to get for your bass buck. Versatile, great tonal range - suits all styles and some. Build quality is as good as many top end basses and despite what some say, I don't see any reason why you'd need to change anything on this bass - the machine heads are more than adequate and if you change them for anything other than top end parts you'll be wasting your hard earned. I really like them - and I have two in my rack at the moment - a L2500 fretted and a L2000 defret (down to a very good standard) - you'd love to get them both for between £600-650. Shop around and you could just do that.
  17. God I want this!!! No I don't.....well, I don't need it but.... I can't be the only person being torn over this surely.

  21. I looked at one of those cheap basses sites - AliExpress IIRC - and there was an Alembic SC copy for a couple of hundred quid - looked very enticing. HOWEVER I know that it's most likely a POS - however there will be would-be players seeing these and thinking that they've grabbed a bargain, only to find that the "bargain" they thought they were getting is rubbish at best, virtually unplayable at worst. This will demoralise the new players, thinking that they have little or no ability, and chuck the towel in. Alternatively they will persevere for a while, make little or no gains and eventually chuck the towel in. When money is tight people will look for less expensive alternatives - in this case though it will drive people away from making music and stop any future spending in the instrument market. Music isn't about elitism but by pushing prices up companies will make it so - at least from the point of sales of new instruments. Inadvertently music companies may cause their own demise. We may find that in the future instruments sales will be self build kits, "custom builds" by luthiers or used instruments. I've said this many times - at the moment it's pretty difficult to find a badly built bass, however if the market ends up being flooded with shite, poorly built instruments, this may not continue to be true. We, on the other hand, who suffer from GAS and currently hoard the quality items, may in the end save the second hand Bass guitar market. Big manufacturers beware - you may find that the marketing strategy of selling high backfires and instead fuels the used "vintage" instrument market.
  22. As it says - I prefer the fishtail tuners TBH but I can only find 14mm.
