1.
As for shops in Denmark street, theres a new one on the far right hand side. They have a decent bass stock, when i went in there last month they had a '78 jazz and a gorgeous '64 p bass. V&R's stock was very thin on the ground though
We were in there just before Christmas. They had a tele with a jazz neck that I had a go on. The staff were great. Very busy but polite. My friend played an amp with his own guitar and I think they have a sale there.
  2. Both those versions of Charming man are weird. I really like this performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3hSDODDNs4
  3. I just said to my wife I'd like to learn some Smiths (and Cure) songs next.
  4. Copying a drum pattern is not that difficult. What it lacks is feel. There is a swing setting on some drum machines and some programs have a randomisation thing built in. The thing is doing it so it sounds good. This was what I meant by programming well in my original post. Pocket, tempo dynamics, volume dynamics. Things that make the difference between a good performance and an OK one. Of course if you got a live drummer they might still be worse that a straightforward programmed drum part. The other thing you might consider is sending your set list to a session drummer and having him make you a CD or getting someone to program the parts for you.

It looks like there's loads of bands in this area looking for a drummer!!
A bit far for me to travel, although my Mrs is from Cleethorpes and wants us to move back. If you get really stuck with making the drum tracks using the method I described with the midi files let me know and I'll try and steer you in the right direction.
  6. I really like it. I'm inspired enough to work on my vocals to do my own solo effort.

    Compressor

I've had a couple of nice rackmount compressors for a while but nothing I'd want to take out of the house. I jsut recently tried a whole bunch of compression pedals (basically everything I could find in NYC) and ended up with the demeter. It is so musical, the two knob design is easy to understand and the way it works is different to the other two knob models. I think that anyone could plug this in and get it right away. The knobs are 'compress' and 'Volume' and that translates to Ratio and Gain but it doesn't matter as the effect is obvious.
  8.
Why is there such a shortage of drummers? Or is it just in my area?
Because we were told that drum kits were to big, too loud and too expensive. I didn't get a drumkit till I was in my 20s for all those reasons. where abouts are you?
  9.
Has anyone any more pearls of wisdom on this subject? (Especially as I know next to nothing!!)
Honestly, I would carry on looking for a drummer. Programming drums well is not easy. If you want a fast way of doing it buy a sequencer program (Cubase, logic, sonar etc.) most will come with a sampler plugin. Download the midi file for the track and mess about until it sounds good.
  10. That's awesome. If my Mrs raided my picture files we'd end up with something not postable on here.
  11. Before you point out the obvious, I already know It's still a stonking bass line (and everything else for that matter) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQsSQRWMhOs
  12. I was in the position of the bass not being my first instrument so had been lucky to play plenty over the years from band mates and in jams etc. When I bought my P Bass I knew exactly what I wanted (a brand new American deluxe P) and played every example I could both here and in the US until I found the one. Six years later and I'm still convinced I was right.
  13.
oooooh what did you buy??
The SB-1000 from the classifieds, need to practice harder now to do it justice.
  14. I've only ever owned 1 bass, although I did buy another one today
  15. I played SHA just the one time in public. It was however in Nashville, Tennessee so I think that's OK.
  16.
Hope this helps.
As there is no 'like' button on a post I thought I would just say how nice it was for you to go to the trouble of helping the OP like that.
  17. I'd love to be able to slap. I've sent the last two years learning finger style as I was a pick only player before. Controlling dynamics was the big challenge and still is. I sometimes use thumb and fingers and would like to develop that more (kind of a soft slap and pop I guess).
  18.
Does this mean that, at least for covering most mainstream music, the written sheets lack the detail ?
Yes, if what was on the record wasn't what was transcribed The big thing about music over tab is rhythm and some sense of feel/volume as well. I'm odd in that I know a whole lot of music theory (I have some formal musical training some of which was quite recent) but only know 3 notes on the fret board by name. I know the patterns for the intervals but don't know any scales. Filling in the gaps shouldn't take long.
  19. I got down to 1 second and Great Wizard on the clef reading quiz.
  20.
This was my all time favourite song for a very long time... brilliant. I've always wanted to do it live, but still to this day haven't found a singer who can pull it off with aplomb (oo-er missus!).
You should hear me do it on singstar. Aplomb a plenty, not in tune though
  21.
After waiting over six weeks for a wah I has ordered, I never recieved my voucher. Probably out of stock.
6 weeks seems like ever such a long time. 6 days is too much no?
  22. I made good use of the two weeks off for paternity leave And continue to do so 2 years later.
